Essendon: LL

SUMMARY
This is a heated traditional rivalry and with both teams coming off a loss there should be plenty of fireworks as they strive to get their respective seasons pointed in the right direction.

Both are reasonably healthy at the moment, but each coach will be sweating on the availability of one key player. Paul Bower was a late withdrawal for the Blues last week with a mystery leg injury, while Mark McVeigh spent three nights in hospital earlier in the week after a cut on his arm became infected. Carlton played the Lions last Thursday while the Dons were beaten by Fremantle on Sunday, so the Blues and Bower have the edge in terms of recovery time.

Essendon coach Matthew Knights has drawn some fire for his free-flowing, attacking game plan, with the same criticism levelled at Brett Ratten last year.
The Carlton coach has pledged to install a harder, defensive edge to his team and this will be a good test.

PLAYER TO WATCH
Carlton's big Irishman Setanta O'hAilpin has clearly benefited from the departure of Brendan Fevola. He's kicked seven goals in two matches and will be worth keeping an eye on for his goal celebrations alone.

Paddy Ryder is one of the competition's better ruckmen when he's on song, but he put in a poor one against Fremenatle. His coach said as much after the game and he'll need to find something when pitted against Matthew Kreuzer and Robbie Warnock this week.

QUESTION MARKS
Can the Blues apply the brakes or will they be blown away by the Bombers? You get the feeling this won't be a shootout going by the sounds emanating from Visy Park.

Will Mark Williams fire a shot? He's been highly disappointing in his first two - goalless - games in red and black.

Do past records matter? The Dons will be hoping they do as they look to make it six in a row against Carlton.

WHO WILL WIN AND WHY
Both teams' forward lines are a work in progress after the departure of big-name key forwards in the off-season. With that in mind it's going to be a bumpy ride for both while they figure out what works for them in attack, but the Blues appear to have a few more avenues to goal right now.

PREDICTION
Carlton by 16 points.

Grigg got suspended at VFL level last week so he will miss," Ratten said

I worry that Grigg is never going to achieve what we all know he can.

Congrats to Eddie Betts for 100 games this week too.:thumbsu:

If it was the same injury that would be a good point. Morons.

I recond our 2 indigenous boys down foward are going to have a big game. Congrats to little Eddie for 100 games. Yarran i think likes the space of the G so if he can get some space he is deadly.

Any in's and out's anyone?

Just got some terrible news!

The missus just told me we have a wedding to go to on Saturday night!:thumbsd: **** i hate people who only think about themselves, selfish ****s!:thumbsd:

I can only ever get to Saturday night or Sunday games and this is just a kick in the guts!

Thanks to video phones, you can be at the game and have face time at the wedding.

Tell the bride and groom to suck it.

Thanks for the suggestion Kray but I have come up with a solution. To those of you familiar with the TV show Arrested Development, I have decided to emply the services of a surrogate. Everyone's a winner.

Anyone else think that McVeigh is a dead-set certainty to play this week?
Nope. Blood infections and hospital stays aren't a great lead in to the game. He will feel washed out and fatigued from the anitbiotics and bed rest.
He'll be lucky to complete a full training before Saturday, and given they are running out of legs in games and he is coming off a limited pre-season, if they play him they must be desperate and would be a sign that they have ZERO depth IMHO.

Anyone else think that McVeigh is a dead-set certainty to play this week?

I hope they do play him. Not a chance he'll be ready to play, given that he's been in hospital most of the week. I wouldn't have thought that would be an ideal preperation for a game of AFL footy.

I'd take a 16 point win over Essendon right now.
In fact, any sort of win will be fantastic for our footy club.

Agree, I reckon Yarran is going to have a blinder, just my hunch.

Agreed, just any win to break the duck against these guys, they are a very ordinary footy side and in the past few seasons we have been too complacent and correspondingly played poorly, and they have made us look terrible

As much as I would like to smash them, we just don't put teams away consistently enough unfortunately, and I dont think this will be an different

This has to be our time otherwise we can call curtains on 2010 and kiss the season goodbye

50/50 game, Bower and Scotland are bad outs especially bower. the media have been on their back so they will come breathing fire. I am worried that if we dont match them for intensity early we may be behind the eight ball, playing catch up.Without bower who is our best running defender in my view we are suspect? Where is Austin still injured? And i was for one for picking up MAIGURE for back up. I dont know why they didnt, i am more worried about our defence than our forward line, we need our mids to play ACCOUNTABLE football. Getting in the back half and helping out, its a must!!

Who said Scotland and Bower are out?

I think we're gonna have every single supporter on BF barracking pretty hard against us. Wouldn't even be surprised if a few of our star players get knee capped.

And no I am not joking, or nor will I welsh out of this bet or do the gutless thing and re-register under an new alias, I will be gone from this forum forever, if the Blues get done on Saturday night by Essen-Scum.

Quite frankly, I am so sick of the soft and small stakes bets doing the rounds on the Bay, so I thought I'd up the ante for a bit, and I assume by posting this, most neutrals now will be wanting an Essendon win on Sat Night

But there is very little risk involved, Essendon will get creamed by the lean mean navy blue machine, and lets say in a hypothetical fluke world, Essendon somehow cheat their way to a win or Carlton tank the game (the only two possible reason of an Essen-scum win on saturday night) I'm gone from BF for good, and you know what, no regrets at all, I'll put my knackers on the line and prepared to see them chopped off if need be, I've been around this site since nearly the start (nearly 10 years ago) under various aliases and used to be a supporter of a different team (which didn't work out so well for me by becoming a Judas ) I've become a bit jaded and bored by BF, so if the Scum get up on Saturday night, that is the final end for me forever from BF, but obviously it's academic because Carlton are going to exterminate Essendon and their finals chances in 2010 without prejudice on Saturday night.

Apparently he is out, i hope i am wrong on Scotland i heard he hurt his knee 50/50.

Bower strained his quad and let me tell you that in 90 per cent occassions is more than a one week injury. Why cant Ratten tell the supporters the truth, we name injured players and have late changes. This happened last year and seems to be happening this year?

This game could mean so much to the club.

A win is a must, to put us ahead of the ledger.

Forget the ANZAC day beat-up!

This is the most passionate rivalry in the AFL.

Nothing compares to these two clubs going head to head.

The two most successful clubs in the AFL - There's nothing I've been anticipating more.

Why cant Ratten tell the supporters the truth, we name injured players and have late changes. This happened last year and seems to be happening this year?

Because he'd also be telling the opposition the truth as well. It's better for the club and then better for the supporters if it helps us beat them.
