How do you Spell North? The Swans Bigfooty Podcast S02E05
Teams (To be updated later in the week)
Sydney
In: C.Bird, D.Towers, T.Nankervis
What this means?
Craig Bird - It means one player from last weeks 22 is going to have to make way for Bird, Bird has finished top 10 the last two years in our best and fairest and with North Melbourne's midfield will most certainly be needed on Sunday.
Dean Towers - It means that Towers is ahead of Bigg's on the selection table, that being said I think unless one of Rohan, Cunningham or Jetta is injured he won't come in this weekend.
Tony Nankervis - It means that Derickx spot in our side isn't set in stone, and we should see him make his debut sometime this year.
Out: Nobody yet
North Melbourne
IN: Firrito, R.Nahas, L.Anthony, J.Tippett
OUT: McMillan (leg)
What it means?
Firrito: Firrito has been a proven performer for several years now, and with wet weather forcast for Sunday expect him to come into the side.
Nahas: If it is pouring on Sunday I can see North including Naha's in the side at the last minuet in replacement of a tall, that being said I think its unlikely he will make his debut for North this weekend.
L.Anthony: I am not sure where Anthony is rated on North Melbournes list, personally I rate him very highly and would be including him in their side this weekend, that being said they most likely don't need many more midfield numbers, even if McMillan is out.
J.Tippet: Unless it is surprisingly dry weather this weekend I can't see J.Tippet making his debut, that being said I would expect him to make his debut in the next few weeks.
What we can take from last week.
Strong performances for both teams last week, Sydney really ran themselves back into form with a 63 point win against the Adelaide Crows, The most impressive aspect of the victory was our dominance at the clearances and the fact we didn’t roll over and give up for the first time this season, hopefully the victory was a sign of things to come and we continue to show improvement over the rest of the year, Oh and I should also mention that Franklin has a particularly outstanding performance on the weekend.
North Melbourne secured their second victory for the season with a come from behind victory over Port Adelaide, The way they ran over Port in the second half was particularly impressive especially with a disappointing outing by Drew Petrie, If they can get Ziebell back from injury this week and Petrie can run himself back into form we could very easily find ourselves with our backs against the wall from the outset.
Expected Key Match Ups
Grundy vs Petrie
If Grundy can hold Petrie to only one or two goals, this will go a long way to helping us secure a victory this weekend, Petrie over the years has been a proven match winner for the Kangaroo’s and even if he has had a disappointing start to 2014 that really doesn’t mean we should take him lightly.
Kennedy vs Cunnington
I Expect both coaches to allow their retrospective clearance specialists to go head to head, Cunnington is coming off a particularly strong game last weekend but hopefully Kennedy can outmuscle Cunnington in close and allow us to get on top in the midfield.
Pyke/ Derickx vs Goldstein and Currie
Not only will Pyke and Derickx have to contend with All Australian Ruckman Todd Goldstein, but they will also have to contend with former Swan Daniel Currie, unfortunately in recent times former Swans have made a point of standing up in matches against us and causing all sorts of issues, so it would be nice to see him have a disappointing match against us.
McGlynn (A.k.a McBabe) vs Harvey
After having a fantastic performance tagging Dangerfield last weekend, Hopefully McGlynn can continue his strong form and shut down Harvey, They are of a similar size and stature so if there is anyone at the Swans who could possibly attempt to close down Harvey in his current form it would have to be McGlynn, If Harvey has a quiet game it will most likely have a profound impact on the outcome of this match.
What to expect.
Personally I am hoping for us to burst out of the blocks and have a solid 3 – 4 goal lead at half time, If we can hold off North Melbourne in the second half we should hopefully be able to coast to Victory.
Unfortunately it is never really that easy in this fickle sport of AFL that we all follow, And with North Melbourne having quality players all over the Park, (Goldstein, Petrie, Wells, Harvey, Cunnington, Thompson and Ziebell (If he is back) we could be in for a really interesting match.
If Franklin can fire this weekend, and our midfield can get on top around the clearances, I see no reason as to why we shouldn’t win this match, that being said with our inconsistent form and North’s recent results it is most likely going to be a close match with us bursting out of the blocks and North Melbourne coming back hard after half time.
Expect Lance Franklin to back up his strong performance on the weekend and march us onwards to victory!!
