In: Lake
Out: Roughead

We must be play safe with Marko, we dont need him being injured long term.
Either Roughy, Cordy or Minson should be out as all the small players i think should hold their spot. I know Gia probably shouldn't but i'd make him the sub.
Minson could be rested, can we expect him to ruck most of the game every game this season? Would be good to see how Roughy and Cordy go. But i'll go with Roughy to miss although he doesn't deserve it.

Might be a good week to rest Cooney. It's a long season, and would be good to have him fresh for Collingwood and Kangas. This would open up a spot for Libba or Smith to return...

^I think it would be good to keep Cooney in this week, and let him beat up on some kids (hopefully). Would be in favour of resting him soon though.

I can't even think of what ins and outs I'd like to see.

I like idea of Minson resting this week. Gives an insight into a long term Roughie/Cordy partnership.

On the sub they will probably switch Gia/Higgens.

Gia out of course. He was just shocking today.

He'll play next week, kick 5 easy goals and cement his spot for the rest of the year again. Happens all the time. I'd love to see him dropped next week.[/QUOTE]

I'm not opposed to dropping Gia he has been terrible but when is it that this has happened with him before? Your not suggesting he should have been dropped during last season?

I would actually leave Markovic out. Not any slight against him but Williamstown plays Port Melbourne this weekend and he or Austin would be very valuable for the Seagulls to have running about for them.

Gia out of course. He was just shocking today.

Even playing GWS we can't be not picking guys who deserve a game to help out Willi

Minson like most ruckman needs time at the coal face. His second half against Jamar was fantastic after looking beat in the first he took the honours and really drove home the clearances when the game was hot.

No rest for Will, he needs time to start dominating this standard as he has the
VFL. I would let him ruck 85% of the time

Markovic and Lake are musts and I would retain Austin. We are short of talls against the quality teams. It is essential to give Austin an opportunity to cement a spot as neither Williams or Morris are due back anytime soon.

This may well be Gia's last year but he remains a valuable player for now. I like everyone else just wish he would stop falling over. Everyone including the umpires are just sick of it. At the moment he will be denied even legitimate frees because umps will assume he is faking it. I suspect he is watching too much european soccer.

I would love to see Liber and Smith back but we have to trust the coaches.

similarly, I am sure Hill and Skinner will get their chances when they are ready. Hill is putting on the pressure with some consistent performances.

I too think Grant looks best at full forward.

Posters are unfair to Addison who gives all of himself and too forgiving of Hargrave who gives little and clangers every bit as much.

We have a problem with the Ruck situation. Campbell has put in another top performance in the VFL. Cordy is not up to Roughhead while he is not up to Minson and Campbell the rooky is better then Roughead. It is a conundrum they are all very likely and worth persisting with.

I am so pleased for Djukerra.

And Vez looked alright against the Dees.

Congratulations to Brendan on his first win as a senior AFL coach; may he have many many more over many years taking us to many premierships.

Thought Addison was solid yet again. Has been consistent all year. His disposal has been pretty good too. I'd have him in my votes for the 2nd week in a row.

Out -

Gia. Looking like an old man. Will probably turn into a dirty player before the season ends.

cross. Same deficiencies as he's always had. Would like Libba ahead of him assuming he's not injured.

cordy. Bit harsh on him but I don't think the 3 ruckman experiment is working.

In -

Dickson.

Libba.

Lake.

In: Lake, Makrovic
Out: Cordy, Higgins

B: Hargrave, Markovic, Austin
HB: Murphy, Lake, Wood
C: Dalhause, Boyd, Cross
R: Minson, Griffen, Picken
HF: Cooney, Jones, Gia
F: DJ, Roughead, Sherman
Int: Addison, Wallis, Grant
Sub: Vezpremi

I would like to see Austin given the chance to play on the 2nd/3rd best forward.

Would have loved to find a way to drop Gia, but can't see anyone to fill his void.

I felt Sherman and DJ gave us a little more balance in midfield rotations. Clay Smith should be given a bit of time at Willi.

In the firing line for next week: Grant, Vezpremi, Gia. Liberatore to come back in after that.

Even playing GWS we can't be not picking guys who deserve a game to help out Willi
What talls do they have? Are they athletic? We can't just play as many of our good tall defenders as possible if we go in too tall or play too slow a defense.
Markovic would get much more valuable gametime playing against the best state team then playing against the worst national team.

EDIT: Disregard this post as it's only Werribee that we're playing next week.

Out: Gia (Rested ), Cordy (very unlucky)
In: Dickson/Hooper, Lake/Markovic

Gia pls just go. Dickson is the obvious replacement but Hooper was good yesterday apparently so they might go with him. I can see us giving Austin another go and resting either Lake or Marko so they don't end up becoming burnt out.

But, I'm worried about this game. GWS aren't nearly as bad as people are making them out to be, and this will be the first time they come up against a side that isn't realistically competing for a spot in the 8.

Wow I cannot believe the poeple wanting to drop addison !

yeh he fell over in a one on one with Watts but lets be fair he wouldnt be on watts had lake not been ill disciplined and smacked a guy and if markovic was in the team.

Outside of that I am not sure what he did wrong and I half expected him to be in the best players when I looked today. He was always the one dropping in the hole infront of Clarke and his last quarter was tremendous repelling at least 4 of the demons inside 50's.

Gee alot of people just have blinkers on I tell you.

My changes...

Out: Cordy, Austin
IN: Markovic, Lake

Currently have a good mix of speed and inside players.
Cannot play with Boyd, Cross, Libba, Wallis, Higgins, Smith inside the one midfield group ever again. Way too slow out of stoppages.

recent additions of speed to help Dalhaus have been great (DJ, Sherman, even vezpremi from the backline helping Murphy)

Can't see Cross getting dropped. Although his disposal of the ball is poor, he sets a good example for the younger guys, plus he was in our best 5 players yesterday IMO.

Gia, I do agree he has looked old, slow and out of his depth in the forward 50 this year. I would be looking at resting him against GWS.

Out: Gia Cordy
In: Dickson Lake

Shouts outs to Cordy Hill Libba and Smith

I think and hope Smith is back in the side. He was only out of the side last week due to soreness IIRC, so hopefully he is back this week.

He is the future of our midfield along side Libba and Wallis. He should get the opportunity to play vs GWS to increase his confidence more.

Great post. Totally agree about Addison and I can't understand why Hargrave gets cut so much slack. He has been a turnover king lately, goes missing when needed. Hargrave has an uncanny knack of not being where the ball is in defence, perhaps that why people overlook his lack of application.

Addison had good stats yesterday and he goes in hard as nails at every contest. McCartney should continue to pick Addison but it's time both Gia and Hargrave took the drop.

Out : Gia Hargrave Austin In : Lake Markovic Higgins Sub: Skinner

Where has this Hargrave lack of application thing come from? Doesn't take a backward step

It must be innate.

11 clangers on his stats. Addison is better.
Less tackles than Addison.
Frees for 1 Frees against 2. Addison way better.

But Addison gets criticised for not being a "natural AFL" footballer.

Addison laid 3 tackles in Adelaide - this was one of our better performances in maintaining pressure.

Hargrave played forward in the Saints game and his forward and tackling was non-existent and he butchered the ball.

That's application or lack of it.

Is it worth resting players this week and putting some extra responsibility on the youngsters?

Perhaps two of the older guys could do with a rest in what is a long season...

Cross, Cooney, Giansiracusa, Minson, Murphy, Hargrave, Boyd. Anyof these have earnt a break. Certainly, there wouldn't be a better time to ease the pressure off Coon's knee...

We are not good enough to rest players.

We are not good enough to rest players.

That's how you get good - give opportunities to younger players at the right time (eg: whenyou are playing the bottom team).

If we don't rest players now, Cooney and others will no doubt be forced to take a break at more difficult times during the year...

I'd rather rest our more experienced players against someone who we are expected to lose to. Give the young guys a shot at better midfields, rather than one full of other kids just like them. Much more likely to learn on the job that way.
But saying that, im not a fan of resting players unless they need it.

I would hate to think that we would enter a game expecting to lose.

If we control who and when we rest players, it gives us the best chance to win and expose players. GWS have a mixture of young/experienced players, so a good idea...

If you don't want to win then that's fine rest players, if you watched the Melb game from the weekend we will struggle to beat GWS with that team

I'll rephrase. Not expected to lose, but against a more difficult opponent.
I wouldn't think winning is of the highest priority in terms of player development. Being exposed to certain situations and skill levels would be far more important I would think.
This is why both of the new expansion teams have gone for a mostly youth filled side. They had the chance to fill them with more experience, but opted not to. Those kids will be playing against the best sides with their kids going against them, and it will only do them well. They'll be able to learn from the best, as well as see how they measure up to them, and in later games/years, see how far they've come.

In our case, since we have a mix of experience and youth, putting the younger guys in against teams that are considered the elite of the competition can only be beneficial.
