No worries.
You have players A, B, C.
Player A is selected.
Player B is not selected and his game starts after Player A's game is finished (or far enough in that you can decide if you want to take A's score halfway through the third quarter, e.g.)
Player C is selected and his game also starts after A is finished or far enough in for you to make the call.
You put player A on the bench with the E. You put Player B on field.
If he goes well, you leave player B on field before his lockout and you get A's score loopholed.
If A doesn't go well, you bring player C onto the field before his and Player B's lockout. Then, you avoid A's bad score and get a second crack at it with Player C.
Example for today:
Cole on bench with E
Murphy from Adelaide on-field (not selected, not playing).
Cole going badly, so I've swung Naughton onfield for Murphy and avoid Cole low score. No guarantees Naughton dominates, but chances are he'll do better.
