In saying that does it really have any effect? Wandin have 15 new senior players in a game this year to the one that got knocked out by Woori in last seasons final. This is not having a go at Wandin by the way just pointing out the points system is very very leniant. Fair to say the clubs that are spending the most are sitting 1-2-3 on the ladder.
Yeah, I think it does have an effect. Last year, if my memory serves me correctly, Healesville missed the finals by 3 games but still managed to get relegated. It's not about the top 3, or top 5, it's about the whole competition. The points system is, and by a fair margin, a lot easier to police than the "salary cap" system that used to be in place and therefore a lot fairer.
The gap between the top and bottom teams in each division in the EFL is probably a good indicator of the points system versus open chequebooks. We won't know until seasons end, but I bet more teams are a chance of making the finals in 1st division in the YVMDFL deeper into the season than teams in 1st division EFL.
