Round ball code talk

This is getting to VFL/AFL levels. I'd rather stick to World cups (i.e. from 1930).

The AFL is right, but Port has 5 national premierships. 🙂

For some reason I'd picture GremioPower to be in the Garrincha > Pele camp
Garrincha was awesome, but Pelé was out-wordly.

Maradona was amazing. Total mastery of the ball. Monster!

Pelé is still hors-concurs.

This movie, I’ve watched it in the theater:

He was the right guy at the right time.

If we are going to go there, Alfredo Di Stéfano was better than everyone else but largely unknown in these parts of the world. Unfortunately, he played during a period of time when Argentina wasn't doing well at the international level.

The France-Argentina final is looking more and more inevitable.
After all the upsets, the final ends up being between two of the candidates. It was always going to be France vs Argentina or Brazil.

Barring some insane miracle that's the ball game. I'm gonna put my tips for the final score in here. Anybody else that wants to can join me and we see who gets closest to the mark.

Sorry El Zorro but I'm sticking with my tip that I've had from the round of 16 in France (once Belgium was gone).

France 3 - 2 Argentina

France are definitely favourites to win it. They always were. They don't seem to need much effort to win and it always looks like they have an extra gear that they haven't used yet. Argentina have been improving throughout the tournament. Whichever team wins will definitely be the best team.

My old Man used to rave about Di Stefano, Puskas and Eusebio but definitely thought Pele and Maradonna were next level. I’m not sure you can say with any certainty the current crop are better. Some of the tackles and treatment the older guys had to cop just wouldn’t be tolerated these days.

Personally Meazza doesn't get mentioned enough 😉

I grew up in the Maradona error and while I loved watching him play, I never really bought into who's the greatest argument.

If I was a coach, which player I preferred would depend on the team I was coaching and the attributes of the other players available

If I was coaching north of Florence I'd prefer the reliability and predictability of a Matthäus or Van Basten but if I was coaching in Naples than the craziness and unpredictability of Maradona every day of the week.

Horses for courses, but I suspect we're all guilt of being biased towards our heroes from our youth. If my dad was alive today he would tell us Grande Torino side of the 40s were the greatest of all time.

As a River Plate supporter, I have a soft spot for Torino.

El Charro Moreno

Argentina got screwed by World War II. Their teams in the 40’s were scary.

They won 4 of the 6 Copa America held in the 1940’s. And they didn’t participate in the last one.

The Copa Roca (current Superclássico) was played in 1939, 1940, and 1945. Argentina won 2 of those. In total, there were 10 matches for those cups (ARG 5-1-4 BRA, but goal diff. was brutal — ARG +9).

haha, that's priceless!

He was an awesome player my dad told me.
I don’t know who the cops are protecting, but it’s certainly NOT Moreno!

I've watched this movie about Garrincha in 2007 on SBS - with English subtitles. It was awesome, just like him.

It stimulated me to read more about the great players of Brazil from that 1950-1970 period. I knew Garrincha was a great player. But it wasn't until I saw this movie about his life that I realised how great he was. The deformities he had, also didn't stop him being one of Brazil's great pants man either.

The proper copy of the move was taken down. This "deformed" one is to get around copy rights.
