Rove is a try-hard Andrew Denton. He thinks he's funny, but he's not, although Denton was actually funny. I watched a few shows just out to see what all the hype was all about. I like the "What the... ?" section (best section of the show IMO) but the rest is garbage. Rove tries to be funny, but just like Tim Ferguson, he is simply making a fool out of himself.

Steve Vizard wasn't particulary funny, but he hosted a top late night show for four year. In the end, the ratings decide.

Whether you think the show was garbage is beside the point. If people wathc it, it means money for the network. Channel 10 couldn't give a rat's what people thought of Big Brother - as long as it rated well, which it did.

Rove IS funny, just not on his show. I know Rove and I have seen a lot of his stand up comedy and hosting before he got his TV deal.
He is a funny man. His show on Channel 9 was (I thought) much funnier than the one on 10, but it didn't rate. It was much more 'young' humour than his current show. But since it didn't rate, it got axed.
Now he does this new show, very Darryl Sommers (This Rove = The new Hey Hey) and though I don't find it as entertaining, lots of 40 year old women now say 'Oh that Rove, such a nice boy, take him home to meet your daughter', it rates and so it stays on the air.
Believe me, you are deluding yourself if you think that the show you see on TV is the show Rove would do if they let him do what he wanted. The show you see is (as Dan said) the show that the station thinks will rate best. It's just a vehicle for people to come on and plug their tour/show/movie/etc.
Anyway, that's my two cents...

Yeah, I understand that it's all about ratings for channel 10, but that doesn't change the fact that Rove is about as funny as Yahoo Serious tripping over a bananna peel.

Rove's Channel 9 show was heaps funnier. I also remember his stand-up on Something Hot Before Bed (ABC) and appearances in World Series Debating where he was funnier as.
I also made the Daryl Somers/Hey Hey/family viewing connection. Sure it rates well, but he's lost his original target audience.
I still watch it occasionally. He has some good guests - and some shockers.

Rove was one of those geeks at school that no one liked. Now in his adult life he tries too hard to be funny to get people to like him to make up for his screwed up childhood. He is a try hard.
