Surely with his record of 6 flags from 7 seasons, and one 2nd placing, he would be on the radar of AFL teams? My dad is a mad centrals fan and continuously rambles on about Roy Laird should be Adelaides new coach (yes he is a Craig hater).

Just was interested in hearing some opinions about this guy. He has dominated for 7 years, which means he has had a decent turnover of players in that time but is still coming out with the goods. Best of all, he has a great finals win loss ratio.

Im not suggesting Adelaide should be sacking Craig, but does anyone know what the deal is with this guy? Has he been chased by AFL clubs and he rejected them? Is he wanting to coach at AFL level?

Should Adelaide look to add him in the coaches box in 2011?

Doesn't want to coach AFL.

SANFL is a much different game tactically. Although a few SANFL coaches have gone on to coach at AFL level. Choco and Knights both stunk it up in the SANFL yet someone saw something in them.

Centrals have won majority of the flags in the last decade...is that more to do with the team/players they have or the coaching?

Many players have come and gone from the club in that time. Teams need to rebuild but if Centrals have been so dominant then I would think they have some decent talent mixed with a great coach.

Players can play for longer in the SANFL, so the period on top is prolonged. Not sure if it's 10 years prolonged, but it's certainly longer than in the afl.

also, Laird would certainly add and element of hardness to the team...

or maybe the "hardness" is just those Gowans thugs...

I thought Viney and Bickley weregoing toadd some hardness

Roy went on record after last years GF saying that he is not interested in coaching atAFL level

Roy Laird is a good coach but it is fairly easy to coach the best team in the competition. I dont think it would've mattered who coached Central, they still wouldve won their premierships as Clarkson and Jonas did. Alan Stewart is the person who should be rewarded with most of the credit in regards to making Centrals a power house today. He didnt win any premierships but he sure did set that club up well.

LMAO.

I think Laird's record puts him into the "great" category. Even if it is "fairly easy".

As I said i think Laird is a good coach but just because he was fortunate enough to take over a side that was already dominant and the structure of the side was already there doesnt make him a great coach. Sure he couldn't of done much more than what he has done but lets see him coach a lower rated side in the SANFL and see what hes does before we say he is a super coach.

How would you rate Stewart then? Didnt win a premiership for the dogs but I guarantee he had a lot to do with that club becoming the success it is now.

Not to de-rail the thread, but does Laird's record compare with someone like J Cahill or J Oatey? Similar success but different era and environment.

I say no, but with no real conviction. The numbers tell a story, but is there more to it than that?

I ask you this question - if Sturt were the dominant side of the naughties and Laird was a six time premiership coach at Sturt, would you be asking the same question?

Of course you wouldn't, you'd be putting him up there with the likes of Oatey and Cahill.

Roy Laird deserves to be up there as one of the SANFL great coaches. It takes an incredible amount of blood, sweat and tears just to coach a side to one flag, let alone 6 flags!

Ok, rant over, back on topic.

Roy Laird has gone on record on several occasions advising he has no intentions to coach at AFL level.

Also, just as there is a huge step between the SANFL and AFL for players, it's the same for coaches. Peter Rohde coached Norwood to the 1997 Premiership, yet when his tenure at the Western Bulldogs was a disaster. Alistair Clarkson has also had mixed success at Hawthorn. Yes, he is, AFAIK, the only coach to coach both an SANFL and AFL premiership, but his time at Hawthorn has generally been average outside of 2007-2008.

I'd like to think he has what it takes to coach at AFL level, it would be a tough ask, even for him.

Yeah he did take over a dominant side. But how many of the team that he coached in his first year were in the team for last year?

Whats more important is there have been other dominant sides through the years too. Eagles and Sturt mainly. But on the big stage, in the big finals, he hasnt failed very often. To me this just makes me feel he is more of a game day coach whereas Craig is a tactics weekday coach. Combining the 2 may be a real positive

Ok thanks, that hits the nail on the head. He doesnt want to coach AFL.

As it has been mentioned he has a fear of flying.

Also have several business interests locally which he has time for being an SANFL coach which he wouldn't be able to spend time on as an AFL coach. He also has a young family afaik. I think it was Cornes who said on AA to some caller last week that he was in no way ever wanting to coach AFL at this stage in his life.

Yeah i agree with everything you say but i guess my point is it is very hard to judge how good a coach is when they inherit a very good team.

By the way to all the Central fans on this board can people tell me whether they believe Brayden O'hara would be good enough to play AFL. Everytime I see this guy play he impresses me and if you're looking for a good kick of the ball you won't find a better player. We could definately do with this sort of player, the only query to me is whether he finds enough of the ball.

Has the potential to be an AFL star but he's already been overlooked in 2 drafts. Would be worth a rookie listing IMO.

Its nearing the end of 2011, the BABY BULLDOGS, with an injury list bigger than a justin hardys bicep, are 2 games plus percentage clear in top spot.

Me thinks a few posters on this thread have egg on their faces?

KG Cunningham hated flying too, never stopped him calling games though

i'm told his fear was massive

If it was a team that was struggling when he took over and didn't have the largest resources in the comp then yes

but otherwise...no

would rather Ron Fuller

And the standard of the AFL compared to the SANFL.
