Despite all the negatives over the ruck, has last night demonstrated that at least we have a little depth at last? Given that Bryan was towelled last week on height, and MM was ballsy enough to bring Richards in against a tall oppo and he did ok, does it show that at least their is a glimmer at the end of the tunnel, or is that a train I see approaching? Will it ever be Bryan/Ricahrds ruck? Or is that going too far.

Richards played very well last night, he held his own, he had a couple of nice tap downs to O'Bree and Burns, dropped down back into Brisbanes forward line a took a couple of marks, worked pretty hard around the ground. His intensity looked better, he was more involved in the play. It was a good performance, he also enabled Fraser to play forward.
He will hold place for Friday night v Freo, Bryan looks like he will come back through Willy, which shows are ruck stocks may be improving.

Pretty happy with guy Richards game last night against a couple of the leagues better ruckman.

We got killed in the last quarter in the clearances but I'm sure we would have at least broken even in the hit outs. They just seemed to keep sharking the footy.

Joshs' rucking was also good as he did well against both Charman and McDonald. Charman was actually getting frustrated and started to charge into Josh and not watch the footy and centre bounces. Josh got a couple of frees from this.

I haven't watched the game yet, but i listened to the second half on the radio.
Did we actually win a centre clearance in the last quarter, i swear it went Brissies way every time.
Was this Richards fault, or our midfielders.

Either way i hope we chase after a good ruckman really hard come trading time.
Yes, overall they got beaten in the ruck, but at least were much more competitive than against the Doggies. I think hit outs were 37 to 32 Brissies way. And Brisbane had to pretty much play Charman in the ruck the whole time. I think they should reasess ruck stocks later in the year but at this stage have to be better than last year.

He did well.

At first I thought Fraser was out with a back injury, but then saw that Bryan was out. Why was he dropped?
Because they needed some genuine height against a real ruckman. Good move MM, and shows the flexibility that they have now that Richards can at least get on the park, played OK too.:)

I thought Richards did ok last night considering he was up against a very good ruckman. I think they should look at playing all 3 ruckman in the one side as we could stretch (no pun intended) teams backlines with Fraser playing as a permanent forward.

It was by far the best game Richards has played in a Collingwood jumper, I still believe Bryan is better but doesnt have the height of Richards so maybe be rendered useless against some ruckman (sandilands), but definetly uses his body better and is better option around the ground and up forward.

I would like to see how all three go in the same side Fraser, Bryan rotating ruck forward and Richards ruck/bench cat see it happening though with the way MM rotates our onballers will leaves us a runner short.

i thought stretch had a fairly good game last night, give him time! he is effectively a first/second yr player!

Richards was better than his early season form, at least he seems to be going harder. That said, he's just an idiot sometimes, suffers severe brainmelts at the wrong stages. On 3 or 4 occasions when the ball was thrown in in Brisbane's forward line, he won the hit out and tapped it over his head and into the danger zone. Cost us 2 goals, and a couple of points.

And I counted only one Collingwood centre clearance in the second half whilst Richards was rucking (which incidentally came from a Charman tap). A few more when Josh was there. That's not saying that Josh's tap work was much better, but he could at least nullify the tap and recover at ground level. Even when Richards won the tap it was rarely to advantage.

Still trying hard and will improve, at least he isn't an active detriment to the side anymore, he is at least breaking even.

Is is too early to pop the champagne?

In all seriousness, Guy Richards was good last night. Had to step up though. I won't put Jamie Charman in the same league as a Dean Cox, Aaron Sandilands or Ben Hudson. If he wants to start getting some respect he needs to compete with the best.

Only time will tell.

Looked alright last night. But we got absolutely SMASHED in the clearances. We did win a few tap-outs, but non went to advantage for us. It was shocking to watch because we are meant to be an okay clearance team even if we dont have a ruck department. But we actually did do well in the ruck, just need to improve the clearance stats because it was disappointing to see it yesterday. It makes a big difference winning the clearances.

Am I reading this thread correctly? Haven't had a chance to see the game yet, but Richards was....good?

I think I just saw Lance Whitnall fly past my window.

Hitouts are very subjective, Herald Sun had us losing them by about 15 while The Age had us only 5 down. We got smashed in the clearences because Black, Lappin, Power smashed us in this area, Charman was also good in getting his hands to the ball and clearing it but it wasn't through bad or good rucking. In terms of tap work it was pretty even IMO.

He was good in the areas like one on one contests (especially in the air), hands off the ground and for once he didn't look too flat footed or lost. And with 10 possesions in 55% gametime I wouldn't be dropping him for Bryan while he seems to be gaining a bit of confidence.
