I had a look through and couldn't find a dedicated thread so thought I would bring all the chats about our ruck situation into 1 thread (apologies if I missed another one).

I look at it in a number of categories and grade them from there...
1) Tap Work
2) Around the ground
3) Defensive Ruck work (ability to nullify opposition ruck)
4) Forward Craft
5) Set shot goal kicking
6) Clearances
7) Marking

I have Will just ahead of BTC at the moment after ranking and grading each area.
Roughy I have a way back at the moment and would need to do alot for me to suggest he is Nbr 1 ruck round 1. You could only really argue he may be best in category 7 in that list and no others

Roughead needs the time in the Ruck like early when he was recruited or he could be in trouble if Collins\Adams come on quickly. He also can't afford to break down with injuries or he will be the current version of Cordy.

But to answer the question. I think without Sandilands, Campbell and a pitch hitter will be good enough. Otherwise it would be Minson.

I've got Minson - Campbell is clearly a better forward than Will but we potentially have Boyd and Redders there.
I'd play one genuine ruckman with forwards chopping out

I'm going Campbell with Boyd (and potentially Redpath) as relief. Hopefully his tank is a lot better. Ran out the game well last night, so that's a good sign.

Plus I think if we don't give him games someone is definitely going to try and trade for him, which would only leave us with an injury prone Roughead and Goetz who still wouldn't be ready when Minson finishes up.

For round 1 I reckon Campbell earned his spot last night for the "full dress rehearsal" for NAB 3, so he's in a good spot to take it.

It's very close with Wilbur and Campbell but I'm going to go with Campbell for now. His versatility to go forward and rest will be a big attraction to Bev and is what will probably get him over the line.

I have Campbell as 1 (only just). He looked far more mobile than Minson last night. Minson makes up for it with pure tenacity around the contest. I've not seen another ruck kick as many goals from throw ins as Big Will does. His field kicking also improved last year and looks to have improved more last night.
Not sure it's enough though. Campbell's speed has improved. He looks to have improved below the knees and is looking super fit.

Roughead is suffering the A.Everitt syndrome. They basically want the guy to play every role on the ground a big man can play, without letting him actually get really good at one thing. I could see him play a bit of a Scott Wynd type role. Performing ruck duties and filling holes in defense. Who knows what the coaches want him to actually do though. Poor bloke just needs to be given a task to stick to. He clearly has the talent.

I voted for Tom Campbell, but if you had Lin Jong as an option
then i would vote for Jong. VOTE 1- Jong4Ruck you know you
want it.
I'm expecting Jong to really make a half forward position his own this year with Cramers out. He could have the ability to go second man up in boundary throw ins in the forward line also but he could stay down and use his power and speed to really open up play from forward stoppages. There are a lot of strings to like in young Jongs armour.

Really don't know. Both of them looked good last night, and I find myself thinking "does T.Boyd play round 1?"

He does, but Campbell is going to be extremely stiff to miss out.

Ok my personal preference is Tommy Campbell. Think his tank improved last year and with a full pre season this year I'm thinking running out games won't be as big an issue for him. Mind you tomorrow I might be back on Minsons bandwagon.
One thing that probably is being overlooked is that I think Beveridge really wants it to be Roughy, he wants a high leaping more mobile ruckman in my opinion. So I wouldn't be shocked at all if it is Roughy gets first crack at it, even with the pressure of the melts that will happen on this board of this occurs.

Whoever it is i'm okay with as long as there is only one of them in the side. They are all liabilities outside of first ruck. I have Minson ahead at the moment. Redpath was actually okay last year in bursts as a chop out, so between him and Boyd we should have the backup covered pretty well.

Agreed.

Ruffy losing his feet all the time is a massive worry for me. Very Austin like......

Usually a sign of lacking confidence. I think his body has let him down so many times that he has lost confidence and it really showed last night. Struggled to finish off the simple things. I really hope he turns it around quickly or else he's gone.

Minson comfortably - Tommy needs to prove he can run out a full game and Roughy to me has shown very little as a ruckman.
Actually, I watched the first quarter replay of last nights NAB cup game and Roughie did some very good work eg his mark near the point post and a brilliant tap into and across a vacant goal square.
Bev for one saw good things about Roughies game last night.
I'd prefer BTC as main ruck, but Roughie is the most athletic of the three with the best leap and the highest tap.
Even when he dropped that sitter chest mark in front of goal, he was good enough to get it through the sticks.. Not sure if the BTC or the Minnow could have done that.

I called before NAB 1 that Campbell will be our number one ruck this year and I'm gonna stick with that for now. Seemed the most likely out of the three but I did admire Will Minsons cute left foot passes into the corridor.
