The Mac Andrews move was reactionary to Josh Treacy going down back rather than proactive. The better coaching move would have been doing it some time before Alex Pearce had taken his 6th intercept mark (3 of them contested) on Ethan Read for the quarter.

Our views on coaching are so often reactionary to the result. With a minute to go Hardwick was going to be in the gun for selecting Swallow on sentiment after his turnover resulted in the goal that put the Dockers ahead. A minute later and it was a masterstroke - side note: it really is a game of inches, 1 inch lower and Swallow’s kick is properly smothered, 1 inch higher and he probably doesn’t make the distance.

Yes, it is a game of inches and luck plays a part in it too. But good teams and good coaches create their own luck.

I am talking on current form. In 2016 he was brilliant. But age catches up on players and we need a tough backman who can bring the ball forward. I just don't see toughness in JJ. and we need a gorilla backman to assist lobb, JOD and buss. i cannot see it any other way. but then again i am not a coach and therein i confess my tactical limitations.

That you can't just cross the line and engage in a wrestle immediately as the ball is being bounced. To encourage more jumping at the centre bounce than just flat out wrestling. Which Timmy is more suited too than wrestling with the other Rucks

I don't think we will play 2 rucks but it does mean that we can easily carry 3KPF & 3KPD with a possible recruit, Lobb & JOD, as well as Darcy, Naughton & Croft. There's a few options there for the backup ruck role.

Tim is a decent enough centre bounce ruckman. He is absolutely abysmal at thrown ins that I can only assume his positioning is some grand master plan that we don't see.

I'd love to see some data on how many big of a reduction there was in throw ins at lower levels that have already introduced this change.

Hawthorn’s performance last night just confirms my belief in what I posted here a few weeks ago.

In short, we need a hard-arsed squad that can apply relentless pressure.

Like them or not, Hawthorn is the side we should model ourselves on. We are a fair way off those qualities at the moment.

For all of the moaning about our defence, how high we press or whatever is the excuse du jour.

It's a glaring lack of hard nosed players willing to do the hard work both ways and bring a ruthlessly physical aspect to the game that is missing from our side. It's why teams like Hawthorn beat us on the regular. For all of the skill and Champion Date top 10's AA or whatever other statistical metric you care to name we have in our side.

Think about who it is that is always the first to fly the flag on behalf of a teammate being set upon by multiple opponents. It's always Tom Liberatore a guy who will be 34 going into next season and a guy who lest be honest is part of the problem in a side that gets beat up on the spread. Thus exposing our defence. There I did it again, I shot Bambi.

The only other guy who shows any sort of fighting spirit or campaignerishmess is VillainDerMeer. A player who if a poll of this board was taken today as to who should be loaded into a cannon and fired into Uranus would run a close second to Lachie McNeil.

Sure VDM isn't the complete player that we'd all like him to be, but until one of Jones, Dolan or Hynes push him out of the side through force of performance. Then I'll take his aggression and campaignerishness over their potential any day.

Both of those guys played most of the year not because they were Beveridges favourites or some such. They played because all of the likely replacements were either Injured: Weightman, A Jones. Not physically ready: Dolan, Hynes. Or those on the fringes yo-yoing in and out of the side because they are what they are: A. Jones again Poulter and Garcia.

With the exception of the known Weightman and the unknown of Hynes and perhaps Sellwood what we do know is that there isn't a lot of the hardness needed to compete with the better sides waiting in the wings.

We got Coffield in to be a hard mid sized defender. He is OK but has clear skill limitations. Patrick Voss from Frankston maybe. Sellwood has a bit but is not hard - needs to hit the gym. Today this back six is not hard and too physically small.

I've been thinking about it alot and I've convinced myself that the rule changes next year between the five man bench and last disposal rule will lean into our gamestyle as much as the removal of third man up hindered us after 2016.

I love that we have the high press in our arsenal and wouldn't want to remove it but it cant be our one wood, and certainly can't be the only trick in our bag.

four biggest concerns for me are in order Lockdown small & tall, Rebound defender/JJ replacement (sellwood or Jaques?) and pressure forwards/Mcneil&VDM replacement (Flea hopefully one). Hopefully Dolan or Arty can be that connection peice on the 50M arc.

I’m interested in what we do with Sanders next year. I’d like the see Sanders and West rotate between deep forward and on ball. We need to prepare post Libba but also if his load is shared more we can get two more years out of him.

When he has been in the guts he has been fantastic for a player his age. He is a top talent and is mid term need - if he stays and develops he will be a key part of a pretty good future mid brigade of Red, Friejah, West, Sanders, Hynes and Kennedy only 28 and Bont will play till 38 like Pendles, Danger. Then another West and Cooney…

We certainly look better with him in the cure side. We will lose to AAs in Trelor and Libba that are not easy to replace.

Then we will draft some and maybe someone else will come through. Garcia had a shocking last game but has some traits, Gags has speed and power but low awareness. Jacques is more framing as a winger but has good hands and decisions making.

Sanders hasn’t re-signed but no secret his is top of the Devils list. Exchange him for two first rounders when the time comes but expect AFL to give us nothing babe/or Tassie just saying o make sure his out of contract so he can just put himself in the draft.

Yes. They are not physical cos they don’t have AFL ready bodies yet although Artie is almost there now and Dolan a couple of years away

One of the things I like about Dolan is his contested work. The guy is small and light but wins his share of 1:1’s. It’s probably why he kept getting games this year. Contrast him with someone like Poulter who almost always loses a neutral ball. It’s a real team killer.

Dolan took a really impressive mark against a much taller & bigger opponent yesterday. Feel like he often at least halves those contests. He is a competitor.

Hopefully Arty can stay injury and on his current trajectory and Flea can come back healthy and then some other small forward steps up. Joshy Dolan maybe. This can allow more mid minutes for Westy. Just feels like we win more clearance stuff when he is in there. (No stats just vibes)

Im in no hurry to move him away from the forward spot he has won for himself - still has improvement in his forward craft.

Agreed he has cemented himself as a forward and really worked on his craft silly to use him as anything other then the odd throw at the stumps if we need a different spark on ball
