Who thinks we should target a ruckman with pick 18? Any Max Gawn fans out there sounds like a big lump of a unit at 206cm and 97kg played with the Sandy Dragons thats all I know about him.

possibly Vardy or Fitzpatrick

Chances are that one of them is still around at 18. If not, it could be worth taking a punt on Majak Daw with our 3rd round pick (most have him being taken as a rookie which I find very odd)

Majak Daw is a rookie pick at best.

Wow didn't check his height. 193cm
guess he's too small for a ruck. for some reason i had it in my mind he was 197+

but still i think the calls for Rookie at best are unfair on the kid. sure he's raw. but he's also tall and athletic, reads the play pretty well and his skills aren't that bad (handpass could use some work though)

Naitanui was hyped as a potential number 1 pick despite not being able to kick the ball and there are a lot of similarities between Majak and Naita

Gawn is the one for me but at pick 34. Has the size and looks like a decent frame weighing 97 already. Would have been the starting ruck for Metro had he not injured his knee before the carnival.

If thats not possible would take Vardy at 18 if possible.

There's somebody called G-A-W-N GAWNNNNNNNNNNN?

DRAFT HIM NOW!

Vardy at #18 would be a dream, but I sincerely doubt he will fall that far. I would be more inclined to take him at #11 if players like Butcher & Panos are already gone.

I think Majak Daw might be taken in the draft due to the success of Liam Jurrah, other clubs will be looking for 'that' player, though I personally believe he's only worth a rookie pick at best right now.

This year's pool of ruckman are complete unco's. I would take Vardy at 34 but apart from that would only consider any other ruckman in the rookie draft.

...And I'm glad we didn't waste a first round draft pick on either of them. Ruckmen are underrated but it's a lottery when taking an 18/19 year old when their true value is only revealed at 21+ years of age. You have as much chance of striking gold with a ruckman late in the ND or in the rookie draft as you do picking one in the first round.

Vardy is worth #18 and James Craig is a chance at #34 and is a very good kick but both are very mobile.
I don't see how you can give up 34 for Craig when he is 195cm, you would have to be very confident that he will grow. I know mobile ruckmen who do more than win hit outs are fashionable right now but how is a guy that size going to go in a final against a Sandilands (if he left Freo) or other 200cm big man.

Vardy looks a talent and whilst 18 might be a bit high in other drafts maybe it is best to go for him. If we rated him the best available player at 18 then I wouldn't not pick him just because I'm hesistant to use top 20 picks on a ruckmen.

Ottens, White, Kruezer as high draft pick ruck choices probably out weigh the negative like Josh Fraser.

After 2010, Jamar, PJ and Meesen all come out of contract, and hopefully Spencer isn't on our senior list. Any chances of grabbing an outstanding ruckman in the 2010 ND are nil, as GC will snap them up.

We should have made a big play for Shane Mumford. Pick 34 would have sealed the deal.

I still have high hopes for Spencer, during the pre-season game against Hawthorn he showed Cox-like glimpses at various stages of the game. Add a bit of muscle, and a bit of self belief (comes with stringing consecutive games together) he could still turn out to be a really good player.

While he is only 195cm he recorded a standing vertical leap of 76cm at the draft camp which was the best recorded jump of the class.

So he has the leap to contend at AFL level IMO and I can't help but be impressed by his kicking efficiency statistics.

I'd prefer Vardy at #18 but wouldn't be heartbroken with Craig at #34.

a draft of scully, trengove, butcher/carlisle and vardy would cover all areas of need for your club.

True... and we'll need to make sure we've got the Russky and at least one of the other two locked up with all possible speed when that time comes IMO.

I'm expecting Meesen to make further strides next year, and we've certainly seen what the Russky is capable of, let alone what he might do in 2010. Even PJ showed a bit more towards the end of this season - if he returned back to his 2008 form next year, I'd definitely want to keep him.

I have alot of belief in Meesen. Showed plenty in the few games he played, good tap work, sounds skills , good atheticism, but gets injured too often.

I agree with you - if he can get a decent run with injury I think we might get a bit out of Meeson. Im starting to think that if Butcher is gone we might consider Vardy at 11 as one of the remaining talls will be around at 18 and theres not much between them.
