Geez, I don't want us to buy yet another ruckman... I know it is sunk cost at the moment, but come on - how many goes are we going to need to get our ruck situation right?

Stick with Wood after Jolly until a Ceglar / Witts can take over.

I hear there are a couple of young kids at Collingwood that might be worth sussing out.
Their names are Witts and Ceglar

Griffin has shown something when he has actually got a crack. Reckon would be crazy not to have him in radar. Just a thought.

Running rookie / 2nd year rucks always feels like you are taking a backwards step. I know these type guys need a start somewhere, but would prefer in a "re-building stage" not that, that is happening anytime soon for us ;)

TBH I havn't seen much of Witts and Ceglar though. Not really a VFL die hard

Alot of love for H.Mac, someone i forgot! Probably not a bad solution short term. I feel in 2-3 years we could have alot of ruckman with a few father-son selections, if we do pick them up of course, which i'm a little giddy about lol.
Jolly doesnt seem to be able to jump much anymore? Don't get me wrong, love Jolly to the hills, sounds good too, but i feel his career and body may be coming to an end.

Problem is most ruckmen take 3-5 years to develop before they are ready for AFL, some rare ones are ready to go before then but those are usually identified and taken very early in a draft, they are not that common.

McIntosh extended for another 2 years after this year I believe. I don't think we would want him to leave but at present he and Goldstein don't work well sharing the ruck because Goldy can run 95-98% of the game in the ruck he doesn't really need a lot of rest and is a bit sluggish if he is only rucking 50-60% of the time. Petrie normally just gives him a short break now and then.

However, the contract is not really the stumbling block. Hale was contracted for 2011 and 2012 when we traded him away in 2010, we also carried Hale's contract over those two years which gave Hawthorn effectively a larger salary cap, in exchange for their compensation pick.

McIntosh is good enough to be a #1 ruckman, and he is not too bad going forward either. It is not his fault we prefer Goldstein.

Strategically, if a trade was enticing enough, you could probably ease some salary cap woes if we carried his contract (Hale's ends this year). The problem would be convincing him a change of environment would be best for him, he hasn't volunteered to leave to date. I think if he asked to go for more opportunity we would let him go like we let Hale go. I think it is one thing having someone raw on the backburner in the VFL, someone in his prime is a different matter. It is probably better for us long-term to be developing ruckmen who will longer-term prospects and just keep a young versatile backup like Daw is being groomed for. We must elevate Daw from the rookie list to the main list and he already has a contract for 2013.

We had a long rut in terms of the ruck, nobody we recruited at a young age came on and we had to constantly recruit older ruckmen let go by other clubs. The problem is the opportunity cost is high. We spent pick 10 on Hale, pick 9 on McIntosh and in the end a third round pick ended up better than both of them. It is a lot of time and resources and opportunity cost in terms of picks.

The problem is when you are within a premiership window you don't really have that time element as you do when you are rebuilding. Even if you get a great prospect in 2012, you are likely looking to 2015-2017 before he is going to be consistent enough to take you through a finals campaign.

Time is a cheap resource when you are rebuilding, it is a precious resource when you are within a premiership window.

Yeah Tas, you're really onto something there, I feel as though the pies have planned but Wood just hasnt come up. We may keep him just based on that.

The reason why Sydney have had strong rucks for over the last decade is because they trade them in when they are mature aged. Much less of a gamble than developing your own imo

Same goes for a number of ruckman around the league. Mummy from cats, Ottens from rich, Jolly from melb, Jacobs from carlton, Maric from adelaide etc.
Sick of this club having problems in the ruck.
