Time will tell if standing the mark still has the benefits you suggest given they now have to stand still until the umpire says they can move.... and the kicker has already made his escape or got his kick awa..

It won't be as good as before, but if your opponent marks the ball and you're close to him it's still way better to man the mark and stop him instantly running forward and playing on than running backwards and seeing the ball fly over your head...

You cannot even run off the mark backwards to take a position outside the 5 metre zone!
So I assume if you are inside 5 metres when the mark is taken you are assumed to be “the man on the mark”.
Anyone confide about the scumpirs understanding 5 metres? When they can’t even understand 15?

Ridiculous. So even if its not your direct opponent the rules prevent you from handing the mark duties over to somebody else, whilst your opponent is allowe to run free up the ground. I can just see Moore or Roughead stuck on the mark minding a midget with the ball in hand, while their direct opponents are freed up to take a simple uncontested mark.....

Unless it's a 2 on 1, the other Collingwood player with Moore will just take the mark and Moore will run back with his opponent... it's not complicated..

The umpire will have to nominate who the man on the mark is for this rule to work. And he’ll be the player nearest the spot. So my scenario is entirely plausible

IMO, Hocking’s team is a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy type situation. You pay people to analyse the game and implement rule changes to improve it so to justify their role they’ll come up with something every year. Sometimes it’s simply a case of changing rules to counteract rule changes that were bought in years ago...

That said I like both changes to manning the mark. The goal square one is marginal although it should allow the team kicking in to somewhat clear more of the congestion. Personal opinion removing someone standing the mark in that situation altogether would have had a greater benefit. The concern I have is the rise in 50m penalties which is inevitable. IMO, to balance this rule it should be a 25m penalty.

Personally 50 is too much in any context except for a reportable offence. It should be scrapped in that scenario too and be replaced with a SOG from the goal line.

Could we see an opponent run free towards the goal square for an easy one over the top and the defender being powerless to peel off so that the forward with the footy has to take the more difficult option and kick on goal themselves? It's almost like the netball rule where the defender is taken out of the next play.

Defensive running and making sure every opponent inside defensive 50 has a corresponding number will be more important than ever.

Prediction: This will be the most talked about thing in Round 1. Whoever thinks of these rules or changes is either in bed with Harry O or sucking Meth 24/7

The only one that'll cause any consternation is the standing the mark rule. I don't mind it but will watch with interest just how rigorously that's interpreted by the umpires. Especially about the delay in calling play-on relative to the player actually playing on.
