Enquiring about the last play in the final quarter of last night’s match between Richmond and Gold Coast.

Tom Lynch marked 50 metres out, plays on attempting to score a goal with about 2 seconds remaining on the clock. Lynch disposes of the ball before the siren sounds, and the ball travels about 5 metres out from goal, to a 1 on 1 contest between Richmond’s Chol, and Gold Coast’s Graham.

The siren sounds before the Lynch kick reaches the Chol v Graham contest, but Graham clearly punches the ball through for a behind directly from the Lynch kick.

There was no rushed behind signalled by the goal umpire.

According to the Laws of Australian Football, Law 15 states the following;

15.5 SCORING A GOAL OR BEHIND AFTER PLAY HAS ENDED

15.5.1 Goal or Behind Recorded in Certain Circumstances Even though play has come to an end, a Goal or Behind shall be recorded for a Team if:

(b) the Goal or Behind was scored by a Player who disposed of the football before play came to an end;

15.5.2 Football Touched in Transit A Behind shall still be recorded under Law 15.5.1 if the football is touched in transit by another Player, provided the field Umpire is satisfied that the scoring of the Behind was not assisted by a Player from the same Team.

Chol did not assist in the kick travelling through for a behind.

Am I correct in saying Richmond should have been awarded an extra behind, therefore making the score 8.6 to 4.8 in their favour, and the final margin 22 points.

Yes, that is my understanding. I have seen it happen before and a behind is awarded.

the only difference in the scenario and the rule is "touched in transit" vs "punched". I'm thinking a touch in transit is incidental but a punch is not.

The siren sounds before the Lynch kick reaches the Chol v Graham contest
There's your answer. Chol contested the ball/Graham, thereby assisting the (disallowed) behind in the umpire's judgment.
