Q, I am a long time runner (>20 yrs, 5-6 times per week) and find it a great way to exercise, keep the weight off and de-stress after work.

If you are a smoker, and haven't done much running before, I would start off slow - in fact probably even walk. 4/5 times per week, 15-20 minute walk/jog is well and truly enough. It may take 3-4 months of this to build up a sufficient base to try and stretch out into decent runs.

For good advice, and as a means to keep motivated (the hardest part!!) try the forum at www.coolrunning.com.au. This is probably the premier running forum in Aust. from beginners to the v. serious.

To get the crap out from your lungs - gawd knows.

I want to get fit again. I smoke probably 15 smokes a day, so that's gotta go.

But how long will the shit get out of my lungs? Should I go slow first or work harder?

I was thinking of running 2 k's 5 days a week for 3 weeks.

What happened to your footy at NP? Yeah, definitely take it easy and gradually build up. If you manage to toss the smokes you're a champion!

I run every night, or walk the same distance if injured, and fire up a gasper the second I arrive home. Madness!

Since taking it up, my conditioning etc has just gone wayyyyyyyyy up.

Yeah, Martial arts is fantastic exercise. I used to do some Tae Kwon Do which really got me fit in a surprisingly short period of time.

Yeah i do brazilian jiu jitsu, to put it lightly its very energy intensive, and your fitness just sky rockets.

The Ciggies will affect you for ages , although you will feel better each day when you quit .

Get on the Iron Horse first , then upgrade to running .

If your really keen , boxing is the way for a quick fix .

Yeah, I do MMA and it really strikes a good balance between fitness and strength.

As for the running Q, start of slow mate. 2 km's may sound easy, but if you're going at a decent pace it can be quite strenuous.
 
yeah one of my classes is 50/50 bjj and MMA, the stand up is intense.

Jab, cross, hook, sprawl, knee in, up, low kick, mid kick, high kick repeat x 50

You die by the end of it, its so tiring

I haven't been doing it as long but I'd agree with pretty much all of that. I wasn't a smoker so hard to tell, but I will say that there was a big difference between starting and about 6-8 weeks later. Those first few weeks it seems like it's always hard work, after that you notice that it's getting easier.

The bold part is important. I wouldn't worry too much about distance at this stage, actually, I don't tend to at any point. Just increase / decrease time.

My mum says the same about my nightly running btw. I tell her "But I'm addicted to going to the physio, not addicted to running!"

Its bad for the legs, knees, ankles. Too much jarring, stick to walking, cycling, swimming.
BTW I am not a doctor.

Hes actually correct, its one reason why people who play football and soccer retire so much earlier than those who play ice hockey which has less wear and tear on the legs.

However theres nothing wrong with it in moderation.
