I'm sorry if this thread has been done before but can someone please shed some light on why we cut Rupe when we did? Just watching those Collingwood classics videos I am still to this day very bloody unsure why we did that. From memory he was playing some very solid football when we told him he was no longer a required player. He was good over head for his size. He had decent skills, was a cult hero and always gave 100%. Was a great player in the memorable in over Port power in the final. Anyone?

I have been given the distinct impression that Rupert had a few personal and intimate issues he was dealing with which affected his career.

Rup, Scotland, and others who still had a few years left MM just couldn't relate too. But the Club is bigger than individuals and MM is our Coach so he has last say right or wrong.

In spite of the fact he's now navy-blue scum, I really rate Scotland. He's still hard at it, solid and a penetrating kick. We could really have used him in the dark years of 04-06...

Rupert was a solid player but IMO he wasnt gonna get much better, i think Mick realised that our window had closed after the 03 grand final and our middle aged guys like him, Woewodin, Molloy and Steinford wouldnt be around for our next shot at it!

He also didn't get the team ready for the departure of Bucks, Jimmy, Wakes, Burns and so on that has left a Leadership Vacumn.

But he is our coach this year so behind 100%..... ;)

That was tough cause we had a group of very average footballers recruited that have since left the club that would have been perfectly suited age and game-wise to fill those roles. If Mick is responsible for the players we recruited then he is responsible. However I don't think that is the case.

Malthouse's fault eh?

So why didn't any of the other 15 coaches pick up Rupe?
What influence did Malthouse have over them? I'm guessing none, they just didn't rate Rupe

Mick Malthouse!

Back in days of Mick playing his favorites.... shhhhh apparently it doesn't happen anymore.
If this was true Rupert wouldn't come back to collingwood while Mick was there

Why in the **** did he help out with teh VFL team all last year then?

is rupert still playing footy at just local clubs or something like that

Last I read he went bush, as in Alice I believe, with his GF. Think he was interested in Indigenous art IIRC. That would have been probably 2-3 years ago maybe?

Anyone else with details?

Betheras was a ripper :thumbsu:

Still remember that day we beat the invincible Brions with Betheras kicking three in the last quarter to get us over the line. Absolute classic!!

Hope thats the next Classic Collingwood moment would be good see highlights of that game again

Rupert was a handy player, who gained some cult status with the fans, who just seemed to pop up when a goal was needed. I like him a lot, but truth be told, he was really just an average player and wouldn't have been in any long term plans.

Rupe is back in Melbourne, has been for a while.
Playing suburban footy with ................. um, I forget (why does Red Hill ring a bell?)

As far as I remember MM loved rup and when he was delisted there was no bad blood at all and rup may have been offered a job at the club. He struggled to get a game in 03. I think people forget due to the fact that we got smashed in the gf in 03 that our side was stronger than in 02. Rup was never more than a very honest footballer. Truth is that if you named every premiership side in the last 15 years he would be lucky to make any of them. The same moronic hypocrites who complain we are not ruthless enough on list managment are most likey the same moronic hypocrites who were annoyed we delisted him.
As for this continued crap about favoritism get over it. Every coach and every leader I have ever known has favorites. Its a dirty word but its reality. It often comes down to ones attitude and influence on the people around them that determinds if someone is on the outer with the coach or not. Scotland was on the outer and most likely because he is a knob. Also probably didnt help that if he got 25 ps going 1 way then his opponent got 30 more damahing possies going the other. As anyone actually considered that it was scotlands complete lack of accountability for is opponent while he was at collingwood that lead to him getting only limited opportunites?
Favoritism happens at all club and those who think it doesn't are deluded.

I know for a fact from a (then) insider at the club that this is the exact reason why Scotland was traded and I've brought it up before on these boards but some people don't listen. MM spoke to him many, many times about his lack of acountability.
