Rusling to miss most of season
09 March 2007 Herald-Sun
Damian Barrett

COLLINGWOOD forward Sean Rusling will miss most of the AFL season after suffering another serious shoulder injury.

The setback is a massive blow to the Magpies, who had earmarked the 20-year-old to help fill the forward-line void created by Chris Tarrant's departure to Fremantle. Rusling badly damaged his left shoulder while playing for the Magpies' VFL affiliate Williamstown last weekend.

...............

eventeen-year-old Ben Reid, selected at No. 8 in last year's national draft, has impressed the coaching staff and may now be fast-tracked into the senior side to cover for Rusling.

That is huge news. Very disappointing.

It leaves our forward stocks even thinner. Makes Chris Bryan/Guy Richards that much more important as we'll need Josh Fraser in the forward line more. Also means Travis Cloke weill have to take more of the load this season.

Would be interesting to see if they give Ben Reid a go. Not many 17 year old KPP's get much of a gig... (travis cloke is a good example of that though)

That's very nasty news for you boys. If Rocca or Cloke go down I would think your season might be all over. Fraser can go forward but more of a full forward than a CHF. If Cloke went down you wouldn't have a lot of mobility in your big forwards, most of the other big guys preffer to play closer to goal.

I think Buckley will need to spend about 80% of his game time forward now.

Massive dagger. And time that Rusling needed to confirm his position at the club. Not good news for either the club or Rusling. Like him or hate him, i feel a need for Tarrant. Come on B Riddy!

I think Buckley's wish of playing midfield roles may have taken a blow from this. He will spend more time forward now than even first thought. However, i'm a big fan of Rusling's, but a 10 gamer is no where near a backbone of the side. His door closes for now, and someone elses opens. It also means we can promote 2 rookies! Martin Clarke and Daniel Nicholls.

Feel really bad for the bloke, and im a huge fan. But as didaka says it does give an oppertunity to another rookie. So with that in mind a name that ill throw into the equation is young Brent Macaffer, from what ive heard is the same sought of lead and mark full forward that personally would work extremely well with rusling in there too, but alas we cant.

I know its a big jump to say that the one player we havent seen/heard much about all preseason deserves a run, but i do remember hearing at the start of the year we thought he was good enough to take at the pick we took goldsack at, but was pretty sure we could get him as a rookie.

Yeah, I think that might be it for Rusling... Touch wood that it isn't, but that's three major shoulder injuries in three years.

He might be the next Lee Walker...

That was Sharrod Wellingham that we were considering at the Goldsack pick. In the end, we went for Goldsack because he was a year older, and more ready for senior football.

Good point about Macaffer though - Now with Rusling down, and not really able to be relied upon, it might seriously be worth actually developing him as a medium-sized leading forward, ala Russell Robertson or Mark Williams.

I think the immediate issue is how we're going to replace him in the short term, as our recent draft provided us with some solid talls who should be able to replace him long term if he never gets healthy.

It means we need to take a look at our forward structure, and what holes we need to fill in it, both short and long term.

Tough break.

Makes your forward line pretty thin, esp with the injury history of Rocca, Fraser and Bucks.

Look forward to seeing some of the younger blokes getting a run.

This is Bad News and Good News, It Could let Matin Clarke get into the Senior Side:D

Shame for the kid but I'm not sure it's the end for the forward . We were hoping he would make an impact , he was far from an integral part of the team , gives another opportunuity to someone else .

Ben Reid , come on down .

Are you sure, i would have thought if we reguarded wellingham high enough to take in the national draft then we would of taken him as our first rookie pick?

i still think that the forward line will still be fairly strong

what rusling offered was a quick leading forward, he wasn't a strong one on one player, he was a lead and uncontested mark type player

reckon that medhurst will now be thrown the role of the leading small type player

so yes is bad news for the kid as many rated his talents, but he was by no means an automatic pick in the 22 at this stage so in terms of damage to the 07 season it isn't as bad as losing many other players

I would say 16th strongest in the league.

look lets not jump the gun here, he is a good young kid, in our best 22??? dubious....will he ever be?? who knows, but i think with or without him it wont make a difference to how we go this year.
my opinion anyway. it is very bad news for the kid, those shoulders are very dodgy, hopefully operation goes wrong and he can prove me wrong.

who comes on the list now?? nicholls? wellingham, clarke??

any insight?

Medhurst would be the logical replacement at FF I would have thought. If the supply is good enough, he could kick 60+ goals at FF IMO.
We still have a little someone name Anthony Rocca playing FF, so Rusling wouldn't have really gotten much time there.

Medhurst probably will play in the spot that Rusling would have been competing for though.

Ahh thats bad news for rus, was looking forward to him playing this year. Its going to hard going for him to come back from this but i hope he does.

But im not too worried about covering him, as i dont think he was in our best 22 just yet. I would have been concerned if it was rocca or cloke or buckley or fraser, as these are the players that we would struggle to cover. We have quite a few options and still have didak to come back into the side later on so all good.
