A couple of days after last year’s prelim final I was still so mad I sent a message to the CEO requesting that he demand Hinkley and Koch go to see the Great Man and make a personal apology for their abominable performance.

Then, round 2 vs. Hawthorn was dubbed as Russell’s memorial match. Another abomination.

I have as a result been increasingly anti Hinkley and anti Koch. I’m sure it has shown. But these two do not deserve to be anywhere near the Port Adelaide Football Club, the home of heroes and legends.

Now, this week, Russell Ebert Has been elevated to Legend status in the AFL Hall of Fame.

I feel human again.

Especially after hearing the TV commentators, at the end of today’s win over the Swans, pay tribute to the strong evidence of Prison Bars in the crowd, and then acknowledge the Great Man as a Legend.

Today was Russ’s real tribute game. Congrats to the players for taking due determination on to the Oval, for playing for the Great Man, and for capping his recognition as a Legend with a decisive victory.

I felt the same way as you at both the prelim and the Hawthorn game with regards to Russell, I was devastated by his passing and while I could maybe understand the prelim I couldn’t deal with the Hawthorn game. With time to think two things have made it easier, remembering that Russell was an exceptional human who understood how hard premierships are to get and also that I don’t think we are a team that plays well when driven by emotion, we almost over play if that makes sense?

I know you’re not a Hinkley fan but he did something at todays presser that I appreciated. When asked about Russell he commented that yes he was a legend of the game/club and we all were well aware but then he took a moment to look the journalist in the eye and say with conviction “it would have been nice for him to have been here to see it”. He made it clear he thought the timing was bad and it should have been awarded while Russ was alive.

For those who missed it but want to look at the digital version, have a look at the link below. Russell gets 3 pages starting at page 10 and the other inductees get between 1 and 1.5 pages.

That was Russell Ebert Football, not that brain dead tripe we played against Hawthorn in his supposed tribute match.

Just read it, sitting on my perch in Pro Drinkers Corner, a Heineken in one hand and wiping a tear from my eye with the other. Beer goes in, salty tear comes out.

I feel so damn lucky to have not just met the Great Man but to have looked after him on his two visits to Hong Kong in 2013 and 2014. Then we got together in Shanghai after the first Jiangwan Stadium game for a few beers, Russ on the right, George Fiacchi on the left. In between, when I visited Adelaide on China Strategy business, we always met up.

Russell Ebert, after his first mission up here with the two Toms in 2013, told Richo on his return to Alberton to go ahead without fear with the China Strategy. Richo then told KT and the Board, and David Koch was delighted; he had popular internal support for his own idea to do something Port Adelaide in Hong Kong. We were on our way.

What happened at the end of 2019 to stop the world in its tracks, including the China Strategy when it was just gathering speed on the right commercial track, matters less to me now. I see the MG octagon on the Club livery, the website, wherever, and I think of Russ, every time. MG, you see, stands for Great Man. In China they read from right to left. At least, they used to.

At the back of the AFL record, Ashley Browne reckons the next legend considered should be Jason Dunstall or Fos Williams.
We've got a couple more that should be elevated, but it won't happen for a very long time now. We've had our moment in the sun.
