What do u guys make of him and his prospects this season. Do u think he can play consistent footy down back. If he could add a bit more pace it would help

Didn't do much wrong last night other than fumble the ball a couple of times but he still lacks agility to turn in a tight circle.

Hopefully time & patience will see him become a more accomplished AFL player.

He is good against the big gorilla forwards. I am in the minority on this board regarding Rutten but I have serious reservations about him at full-back. To me (watching mostly on TV) he doesnt look agile OR fast enough to play FB against the best full backs in the competition - Lloyd, Hall, Tarrant etc.

Time will tell how Rutten goes - perhaps he will end up in a KPP

Not convinced. Never have been. Although I do think he could be "ok" up forward.

I think he is possibly the most overrated player from people on this board, or has been over the summer anyway. He won't be for much longer.

I dont get this turning centre issue - he doesnt seem to be that bad

I like the fact that (along with M Stevens. Roo and Hudson) he stood up in the tackles and it gave him the ability to dispose of the ball - but also took more than 1 power player to drop him

So I am not the only one then ****. ;) Look I know we all desparetly WANT a bulked up youngster to come in and play the very challenging possie of FB - but unfortunately that youngster needs to have the athletic ability to go with the best players - the Crows have been blessed since inception to have 2 champion back line players. Unfortunately one has gone, and the other one very almost gone.

We cant sacrifice the guy after one game though - lets see how he develops but IMHO he is unlikely to make the grade at FB

Its funny, I was a lot more comfortable with this guy before last night. Just wondering if he has spent too much time in the gym over summer and too little time on the track.

in fairness though....these guys cut up most defenders

Rutten isn't going to be FB of the millenium....but he is definately the best option in our squad ATM.

I much prefer Bassett. That guy is just Mr Reliable. His presence means so much to our backline.

I still think he is the answer, maybe not for every game but I think with our backline we can be versatile.

Rutten is very quick of the mark one of the quickest over 20 metres, he is big so I think his initial speed is decieving.

His versatility is a problem but as I have stated last season in a post, he has footy smarts and I think with his positioning and his footy smarts he will be able to overcome this.

We need a player like him and I think Mad Dog summed it up pretty well.

who is your replacement ??

How quickly we forget. One ordinary game doesn't make for a bad player. Let's not forget he did some really good jobs for us at FB last year.

By the sounds of it we have more to worry about in the ordinary form, carried over from 2004, of Bock, Jericho, Bode, Shirley and Skippy.

Who is it that cut Rutten up last night?

Anyone would think he had 10 kicked on him.

IMO, he is the long term FB. Bassett is too small and not strong enough. Besides having the truck back there free's up Bassett to play a more creative running role, hopefully ala Smart.

I think we have far bigger problems than Rutten at FB.

It's the same old robbing Peter to pay Paul situation........Bassett will be an asset as a flanker coming out defense this year. Guys like Lynch and Rocca used to make Bassett look Under 8's....

I think we need to persist with Rutten until we can grow a bigger one.

This is why I rated Rutten one of our most important players for this year...(top 10 in that poll IIRC)..........because if he can hold down FB - we can run other talls out of defense, but if he can't - the domino effect thru the backline exposes Bassett to FB.....and Hart to a less creative role (if he plays), and unfortunately brings Bock into play.

Bassett is reliable but not big enough for FB......and can create out of the backline if given the freedom

Geez people why do you write him off after one pre-season game?????? He beat his opponent and played a reasonable game. Sure he fumbled a couple of times but he is one of only a small number of players on our squad that can hold their feet in a contest.

All the running tests suggest that he is one of the quickest at the club over the 20 meters but his first 5 meters need a bit of work. Agility is not great but its passable.

I also don't understand this obsession with a good FB having pace. Playing FB is more about angles and positioning than about pace. Chris Tarrant has got to be one of the quickest KF off the mark on a lead and Stephen Paxman was not a quick FB but Tarrant never played a good game on Paxman. Not because Paxman was quick off the mark and could go with Tarrant but because Paxman knew how to play the angles and knew how to position himself so he negates Tarrant's pace.

Sure it would be good to have a FB that runs 20 meters in 2 seconds flat BUT Rutten is a smart player with a good football brain so he is smart enough to realise that he can't beat some players off the mark but he does know how to play the angles and he does know how to position himself. He plays to his strengths and thats all you can ask of him. Give him a bit more time he hasn't even played 20 AFL games.

Of course you need pace. Lynch and Llyod ring any bells.
Id say Rutten has the body strengh and Basset has the pace. Its just a shame they havent got both.

Rutten does have the pace, I think you will find as I mentioned early he is one of the fastest at the club over 20m.

I agree with most of what's being said etc. Rutten huge, but too slow.

IMHO he is perfect to handle the gorilla forwards and also provides a surprising amount of run from the back line for a player who is not blessed with agility.

I agree that he couldn't handle players like Tarrant and Lloyd but IMHO Hart and Basset can, Lloyd in fact has a surprisingly bad record against the Crows however unfortunately i can't say the same thing about Tarrant

Fair question MD - and one im not sure I really have the answer to... :( . I was commenting more on the problem (that Rutten isnt up to FB IMHO) than the answer to the problem (who would replace him).

Thinking about the issue further...the best full backs IMO view are Lloyd, Hall, Neitz, Tarrant, Gehrig - I would imagine either Bassett or Hart would be more successful than Rutten in terms of negating these fast leading types (who are also the best full forards). I am not saying Rutten doesnt have a place at all in the team, its just he hasnt as many dimensions to his game relative to other talls.

There are alot of traits to admire about Benny Rutten and I hope like hell he proves me very wrong re the above. As I said I am not writing him off after one preseason game but I had previously raised a thread along the lines of my current stance on him

 RB&G think this is in fact one of his problems along with agility.
First 10 mtrs he is at a disadvantage over leading forwards - pace is pretty good once he's up and rolling.

But gee lets not condemn players too much after the first hit-out of the year
otherwise we wont be able to pick a best 22 by 1st round :p

Pretty good response ;)

must be watching different guys, benny hart is MR Reliable. Bassetts AFL FB career is over, if he can be attacking enough to play a half flank, or is able to stay with the small guys he might just make it. Very overrated

The jury is still out on him IMO. 2 things that he needs to improve on though are his kicking (he's got a Darren Gaspar-like action), and when the ball is on the ground he fumbles a hell of a lot for a professional AFL player.

Yep, hasn't yet arrived, but he hasn't missed his flight either.

One particular moment did make me wince, and that was in the last quarter when he was in front but let Damon White nudge him under the ball and then take off, leaving him for dead - in fairness this was the first real hitout of the year, but the reality is he'll be handed assignments on better and more experienced forwards than DW come the real stuff.

Hopefully for all our sakes he can continue to learn and improve as the weeks and months progress.
