He is a second year key position player (they take time) who is playing well in the vfl, he has plenty of time.

Will get games next year when lonners is retired.

How is this bloke coming along? I've not seen him play VFL but sounds like he might be a goer?

Played well again today. Still has a body that is not hardened but his size and shape suggest he will be a genuine KPD. At the moment he is well behind Kolo who is also in the VFL but he will get his chance soon enough. A good one to have on our list. Love the Tassie kids.

Seems like he's a fair way back in the pack, and also out of contract at the end of the year.
Project player IMO, no chance of him being cut as he is being prepared to take over from Doms

“I’m aiming to play seniors but obviously I know there are some good players in front of me so just playing consistently. If I get a shot I’m ready to go but if I don’t I’ll just keep working on it,” he said.
...
“From last game to this game it was definitely just my kicking, I needed to be a bit more composed,” he said.

“Some of my kicks I kind of rushed it and even the ones down the line I was trying to kick off too few steps, so I tried to do that this week.

“And also just helping my teammates, if I can influence and come off (my man) and help my teammates, that’s another thing he (coach Shane O’Bree) wanted me to focus on for sure.”

But the 19-year-old, who made headlines last year for quelling Travis Cloke, is just aiming for consistency after a patchy start to his career.

“The message from ‘Nige’ (assistant coach Nigel Lappin) was I obviously need to play consistently if I want to get a chance to play in the AFL team, so at the moment I’m just trying to play as consistently as I can, try stop the guy I’m playing on and also help out the team as much as I can as well,” he said.

I think they will sneak him in later in the year. We have had a lot of change in the backline , and adding him as well might be the tipping point if Taylor is still forward. I see him as much as Lonergans replacement as Taylors. If he gets 2 games this year he puts down a solid peg in the ground for next year

Id say he has shown enough to rise above the project definition , at least in my eyes. Buzza and SavRat who was an earlier pick would be the project to me.
Question. Have you seen spend any time forward at all? I cant say I have. When we look at senior KPD , in fact all or defenders in the Geelong side , the ability to kick a goal is required at some stage

When was the last time a tall key forward kicked 6 in the VFL?
In fact when was the last time anyone kicked 6 in the two's?
Just shows what a big forward can do when he's dominant. Why worry about how he'll slot into defence (afl) when we might potentially have a big key forward who can kick a bag!
Quite happy to see his development as a key forward if he's getting results like this.

depends if he’s mobile enough as we don’t want 2 tomahawk in the same forward line.

Well if Toma kicked 4 and Gardner 6, if they kicked ten between them, would you say no?
Remember smalls need talls to bring it their way to ground otherwise they'll struggle.

It really depends on the set up , I can see what you’re saying but I would give him a couple of weeks to continue playing that role in the VFL with stints in the ruck to see if he can replace Buzza.

Too early to tell

“THERE may be varied opinions about the origins of his new nickname ‘Plugger’ but what is not up for debate is that Ryan Gardner looks very comfortable as a key forward.

Six goals for Geelong in Saturday’s 70-point victory over the Northern Blues in the VFL might suggest that is a fairly big understatement but the goalkicking just topped off what was a superb afternoon for the 21-year-old.

“I’ve kind of taken the mindset to now just try to attack the forward role as best as I can and play that role and try to get in that way. It’s a settled backline (in the AFL) at the moment but things change from week to week so I’ve just got to be ready I guess and playing consistently and doing that is the only way I can.

“But I’m not really too worried about selection, I’m just more worried about playing good footy.

“Today was a good result to kick six but I’ve got to be able to back it up and make a contest next week. It doesn’t come down to just one week of kicking goals, it’s got to be done consistently, so that’s the main (message) I’m getting from the coaches.”

Someone was asking in the VFL thread if a player had ever moved from Key back to Key forward and been a success before. I was just reading on the main board that Nick Riewoldt apparently started his AFL career at CHB before being moved to CHF. I'm not sure what position he played as a junior but some hope yet perhaps for the Gardner switch.

True. Was Pavlich the same as well?

Not too sure on that one. I know he could play most positions though. What do you think, Gardner straight swap for Buzza this week? Or give Buzza a couple of weeks to find his feet?
Players need minimum 2. Poor development to drop after one game.

Nah I’d give Buzza another go. Or bring Abbott in for Buzza to ruck, and move Stanley to 2nd Fwd/Ruc. Gardner only kicked 1 goal last week in his first game as forward otherwise was very quiet so just needs to work on 2-3 good performances up forward in a row for mine before coming in. But there’s definitely a spot there for him with Esava’s injury. I wonder if we’ll get Gardner to do some rucking next week to see how he goes as a forward/ruck considering our 2nd Forward needs to help out in the ruck in the seniors at times.
