Ryan on channel seven news tonight and said he has been offered a chance to be a father and son rookie player for Freo because his father played 154 games for EF and that he is lucky that his father was such a good player. Seems he is not totally opposed to being with us.

Oh plus he didn't test at the combine because he is still recovering from his injury. May help him to slip to our rookie pick I hope.

Have we or not successfully selected him as a Father\Son? In which case hes ours as a rookie pick??

No. If he is not taken in the main Draft or the PSD than he goes to us automatically as our last pick in the rookie draft is my understanding. He has to get through 2 drafts yet before he is ours.

I believe they have a nomination day for the rookie father/son.
If any other club nominates that they will select him in a draft we can match it with our immediate next selection.
If no other club indicates they will take him he is ours utilising our final selection in the Rookie draft.
Either way, Ryan will be on a AFL list next year.

I went on this Fred. Can't be sure if it is the most up to date rule on father and son rookies. Am happy to be corrected if you have seen something else.

FATHER-SON – ROOKIE PRE-SELECTION
The Father-Son Rule previously applied to players selected at the National Draft. Under the rule, other AFL clubs can bid for eligible players who have been nominated under the Father-Son Rule by an eligible club. The nominating club can select the eligible player by forfeiting its next available pick in the draft if a bid has been made by another club. If there is no bid from another club, the nominating club forfeits its last pick in the National Draft.
A club can pre-select an eligible player as a Category A rookie between the Pre-Season and Rookie Drafts (with the player’s consent) provided the player had nominated for but was not selected by another club at either the National or Pre-Season Drafts. In that case, the relevant club would forfeit its last available selection in the Rookie Draft to take the player.

Would be 100 times happier if he was from the loins of Rod, boy oh boy, could he play.

Neil was a very chirpy squib.

Yeah, Rod's more my vintage and he could seriously play. There weren't many hyphens playing back then (guess there still aren't). Never really noticed Neil.

Yep, I stand corrected.

Based on the above I can't see what the point is of nominating a F/S Rookie.

Big deal if they don't get drafted in ND or PSD, hardly seems earth shattering that other clubs are precluded from Rookie listing him.

I thought the same but maybe they have an eye on someone specific for our first rookie pick. We have 3 picks in the rookie draft.

I suppose the feature was there so they might as well have done it. If it works you could look at it as if we got another first round rookie pick?

Yep. That we were not outbid on the rookie draft indicates that no other club will draft him , especially with his knee problem that precluded getting a "fix" on his abilities.

Apart from the fact he is a potato. ;)

I am under the impression we don't know yet who will actually be in the rookie draft.
Isn't it the players who are passed over in the ND & PSD ?

F/S in the rookie draft seems much ado about buggar all.
Good for Ryan's ego and peace of mind but that's about the extent of it. IMO.

I don't think there is a bidding process for a rookie (see a few posts above). If he doesn't get selected in the ND or PSD then he is ours but he is a live selection in the ND or PSD for anyone.

You have to take what advantage of the rules you can all the way to the last pick , IMHO.

Neil did win a Bernie Naylor Medal. Annoying goal kicking small forward. A slower version of Ballantyne, and dirty little bugger too. So one of my favourites in the Late eighties, early nineties. At 189cm Ryan is a lot taller.

Well I guess the benefit is that we don't have to worry about him being taken before our 1st or 2nd rookie selections so we can get two others we want without having to use those picks on Ryan. We may have considered using our first pick on him, now we don't have to worry about it.

FWIW, last year only GWS GC and Brisbane had less than 2 rookies selections.

It's probably fair to say most clubs look at Fremantle's model on drafting rookies.
We have been very successful with our rookies.

Matt Taberner hopefully will be our next star rookie recruit.
