whatever happens he needs to "earn" his position

yeh no doubt bout that. After 2 very elan eyars, you'd have to say he relaly need to play 15+ games barring injury and possible suspension to stake his claim to be reclaimed on the list for 2007. Had a grat start to his career, and still ahs terrific value at AFL level. Just one of those players who devloped so quickly in2 years, its almost like he peaked at the end of 2002. THat running player breaking the lines is what we need, when he was up, with BJ on the other flank, we had great repel, and better disposal/ delivery into our foward line. an uprunning ryan lonie makes a two goal better collingwood.

if you all noticed that both the lonies hit a slump together
about 2 years ago their dad died of cancer.
for any one that has been there will know that you just dont bounce back from something like that, they also both will improve , count on it

good to see someone knows their stuff. Your right on the money :thumbsu:

Positive last few replies, i guess i posted this thread because i have a feeling he will bounce back, he has got a little bit of what Collingwood is looking for, when on target he has deadly disposal and has some pace, which is two things Collingwood has been looking for in this off-season.. His chance to shine

There was so many people willing to write off Rhyce Shaw last year, and look where that would've put us...

Lonie has enough talent to be kept around for a Ben Kinnear amount of time.

People's memories are so short - everyone is saying he's had a few lean years, but in 2004 he played all 22 games, averaged more possessions, more marks and more goals than any other year.

Before being dropped this season, he'd played 59 games straight, his performances up until then can't have been too bad.

Ryan has plenty of skill as another True Believer stated he is good when he gets it but does not get it enough. He has the ability to break the flood by running 20 metres and kicking 55.

He might also have a bit more incentive given that his twin brother got the Tijuanna Brass from Hawthorn to Port.

Hope he does get back to hard running and long kicking he is never going go in and get the ball like Licka or Burns

I love Ryan - that dashing style running off half back kicking long bomb goals - gets the adrenalin pumping.

But what concerns is his short play kicking off his right foot. Get this right and I think he will become a long term player for us.

If there is ever a player who would make us pay if delisted, its Lonie

Hopefully stands up in 2006

if there was an award for best member you would win it, you consistently give valid and reliable information no matter what the topic

thought i'd bump this thread back up.. does anyone think anything has changed for lonie due to some of the player we've drafted in, or anything shown in his preseason form to suggest he's determined to make an improvement, or anything?

No, not really. I still think he will play most of this year on a Wing.

I think he's better in defence than on a wing, due to his terrible below the knees capabilities and ordinary lateral agility and vision.

Streaming out of defence as a go to linking option suits him, as he doesn't have to pick the ball up himself and his preference is to have that tunnel vision, run hard kick long scenario, rather than having to worry about lateral movement, or feeding off to someone else. He's a one trick pony, but she's a good trick!

With two keys, plus Clemo, plus Max, Malthouse finds it hard to land him a spot at times.

Max is more versatile and better below the knees, but not as quick and with inferior footskills. Better aerially. Max & Clemo have been absorbing the medium tall forwards well, and there usually aren't three of these types. Still, who said Clemo or Maxwell can't be used in other possies, with Lones looking after the thrid or fourth medium tall?

I note Johnno26's Monday training report at Nicks said he was in defensive kick in training, which would mean that he's still seen primarily as a defender.

Watching a 2002 game on Fox about a couple of weeks back, I noticed his attack on the footy was quite good. I think he's a front runner in this regard. Why put your body on the line when the season's stuffed anyway? It's a crapish attitude, but I kinda half understand it.

Fact is, there are some blokes who you can't get to play to the strengths you demand. Sometimes you just have to play them where there strengths work and accept their deficiencies. He's a pretty good linking option. Hopefully he becomes a very good linking option, but he'll always have some faults.

I thought it might also be due to his foot skills, but they wouldn't chuck him on a wing and expect him to run down the field to take the kick with the new kick in laws. A strange one - his potential will be realised on wing.

Yeah i love him running off a back flank and hitting a target lace out about 50 metres down the ground. He does have all the tools needed to become a good footballer so i hope he realises this potential and has a ripper of a year.

Too loose and soft to play deep in defence.
Does not get enough possessions to play midfield.
Not good enough to get a game in our forward line ahead of Rusling Tarrant Rocca Fraser T Cloke Buckley etc.

Not tall enough for key position and not quick enough for the flanks.

So where do you play him? He's got enough natural talent but can he actually find a position on the ground that suits his skill set? At the moment all he can do is play the sweeper/rebounding defender role. He needs to show more or he'll be traded at the end of the season.

If he can recapture his early form and run off teh half back flank and score a couple of goals a game, i think he should be playing right there! I know he isnt particularly accountable, but who cares he can add sum attacking flair and our defense is allready good enough we can afford to carry him!

He may well be suited best on the wing, but it seems to me that every second player on our list is suited on the wing!!!!! Now we all know that cant work, who's going to play in the middle, HBF and HFF positions.

Ryan needs to play HBF coz he is better suited there then other potential wingers.

I assume he wont play in the middle coz he is to soft

Also regarding his suitability further up the ground he is no good at playing in front of the ball, compared to how he plays behind it. He just does not command the ball.
Wing and hbf are his best positions. As long as when he's playing on the wing he is playing mostly behind the ball, otherwise he is lost.
