We badly need some forward grunt and I just hope that Murphy starts in the forward pocket and is given a few games to develop in this position. Hate to see him start in the backline and then move all over the place trying to fit a role that he may not be suited too.

Freo have a good mix of backline players already.

i want to see him thrown in the deep end at Full forward. lets see if he can swim

I agree with Jarman. Give him time to build some bulk and add some strength and get some AFL experience in him in the Forward Pocket before we throw him into the Full Forward Position. Same with Michael Johnson who to what I last heard can also Ruck so we should be expecting him to get a game this season and hopefully they don't disappoint

I don't know if he'll get much of a go, as our forward line will be pretty crowded if Pavlich and Polak go forward. Those two plus Medhurst and Farmer would get first dibs and Murphy isn't a HF flanker, so at best he'll be bench warming.

Farmer would need to buckle down and start kicking some goals before he becomes the bench warmer. Murphy is a Key Position Player so he will crave the Full Forward spot and personally I think if Polak can't cut it at Full Forward (which I actually think he'll do well now) Murphy will go there!

Polak will be given more time to develop in the forward line, so Murphy will have to wait for his chance.

Agreed. To be quite honest I think Polak will do well up at Full Forward and am a big fan of him filling that role. Murphy though probably should be in the pockets with Medhurst, Pav at Centre half forward and Farmer on one flank and either Headland or Browne on the other...keeping in mind Headland could play on the wing or the Half Back Flank.

Murphy will get to prove himself and hopefully so will Johnson as I'm a big fan of both of those guys getting a go up forward this season and getting to develop!

Spot on!

I think Polak or Pav would have to be unavailable for Murphy to get a run in the forward line in 05.
With JLO and Sandi having stints in the forward line, we would be too tall and lack mobility if Polak, Pav AND Murphy were all in the side.
Medhurst plays like a tall as well!

Also with all the midfielders we now have we need to fit them in there somewhere and up forward is ideal, especially for Schofield, Carr M, Schammer, Black and Headland.

Farmer kicked 37 goals this season and would have created a shizzload more.. some people are expecting him to dig 76goals somehow while not being considered the no.1 forward target are dreaming... he never got dropped last year because even if he wasnt kicking goals he would create the necessary defensive pressure.

his 37 was still good enough to be in the top 20 in AFL also

Newbie .....cha ching on the money.

Farmer's workrate off the ball is first class....both he and Medhurst struggle when a spare tall is played in the back half and we need to ensure we match up with a Pav and/or Polly giving a contest inside 40.

Farmer is not the problem.

His contribution to the team is highly under-rated by both our fans and opposition fans alike. I just wish the other forwards would take a leaf out of his book and play like he does defensively.

Hint hint Medhurst. ;)

My preferred forward structure is:
F/Forward Line Medhurst Murphy JLo
H/Forward Line Pavlich Polak Farmer

JLo needs to be on the ground at all time either in the ruck or up forward, he is difficult to match up on up forward.
Pavlich is better suited across H/Forward with an occasional run in the middle again difficult to match up on.
Polak needs room to move, much better suited at CHF not quite quick enough on the lead to play at F/Forward. Can also swap with MacPharlin to add a bit of versatility.
Murphy will be a gun, is very football smart and must be played at Full Forward could end up as good as Lloyd  once he bulks up and has a couple of seasons under his belt.
If Murphy does not get game time this year he will leave the club.
Farmer & Medhurst already proven small forwards.
Roll on 2005 Freo will be a lot more potent through the middle and up forward.

Exactly! He's so darn lazy defensively! I saw him chase someone down on one occasion in 2004 and I nearly died of shock! And then to back that up they played him in the defensive half for a few spells too.

Undertaker - Some good points that I agree with but I do not think Murphy is ready for CHF as yet. He is a FF but not yet, so play him in the pocket for starters. Polak is better at CHB. Pav in the middle or HF for the very reasons you state. McPharlin would be great at FF. As we do not have a CHF, how about M Carr. Also agree JL should spend some time up forward but he is our No 1 ruck.

How's this?
F/Forward Line Farmer McPharlin Murphy
H/Forward Line Pavlich M.Carr Medhurst
