Having seen Franklin rise to the superstar he is up forward. Does any Essendon fan think of Ryder actually playing an offensive role up forward?! Hard to say whether he would be any near as good as franklin around goal but both have very similar builds and attributes. I personally think playing him at CHB is murdering his potential! Put him up forward!

I think you're right in a way.

At CHB I think we have a at worst a consistent performer who could get better at the role.

Forward we have a player that could be anything but might not be.

Personally I think that Ryder has shown enough potential up forward that it would be wrong of us to not persist further just in case.

The other problem is then we need even more young key backs

Nup

He only played forward this yr coz of injuries....and he did shit all

He's being groomed as the next fletcher

Next Fletcher you think? I would've thought similar flexibility and other physical attributes but he would play further up the ground than Fletch.

Ryder up fwd could be so much more damaging than at CHB.
I just dont know whether he can stay switched on as much as he has to be when he is in the backline.
Sheedy actually said that is why he put him there.

second that...

Don't know about him been the next Fletcher... but I'd like to see him work further up the ground than fletch.

I really like him as a defender. From a team point of view, we need him there with Michael now retired and Fletch not far away.

DaSawx - It's weird not seeing your name in bold!

He is a gun CHB in the making but f--- when he plays forward I love the ball being bombed down to him because you know he is going to stand on someones head and bring the ball to ground.

Apart from Buddy and Fev all the talk seems to be around defensive forwards and attacking backs. Given our current list (if we can keep them on the park) I can see Paddy blooming as an attacking back - "ryder runs the line, goes long to Gumby who is too big for his opponent, quickly turns and drills it to Neagle on the lead...." is what i am loking forward to.

Ryder definately has talent, but he needs to believe he is better than he does IMO, although I don't know him persoanlly.

The difference between him and Buddy is Buddy believes he can do the impossible and he tries instinctively.

A little self confidence would go a long way for most of our youngsters I think DaSawx... perhaps to take a leaf out of our own Kyle Reimers' book?

It's all well and good to play Ryder up forward and watch to great thing but when you're midfield is as bad as Essendon's, you need someone to stop the opposition from kicking lots of goals. Ryder is a very good backman and we need to use him where his skills can be best used and that is down back. We already have to big champion forwards and 2 young ones who will become stars. Ryder is a backman and when he plays down back Essendon's backline is a lot more stable.

"Neagle snaps a behind after carrying a tackle. Scarlett with the kick-in, ball in dispute around Geelong's defensive 50, here comes Davey, he's tackled Bartel "BALL!!!"... the Cats just can't seem to get it out of their back 50 with the hunters Davey and Jetta hovering to attack their prey"

Whoops sorry, got a little carried away!!! :D

Your comments are quite fair. Our midfield is only missing polish however, someone like Kerr or what is looking likely, Rischitelli.

Now I want to take you back to the Hawthorn game this season, Franklin kicked 9 goals, predominantly on Ryder. To me it seems a waste to have such an attacking player be wasted on someone like Franklin who is going to kick goals no matter who players on them. I'd prefer to see NLM play on Franklin, at least he'd give a physical presence... and yes Franklin would kick his 9 goals but Ryder would be freed up to do what he does best!

Of the 7 or 8 goals kicked on Ryder, he could have stopped one. Scarlett could have stopped one. Silvagni could have stopped one. The delivery from the midfield was perfect for the vast majority of Franklin's goals. The problem is the defensive aspect of our midfield. Everyone's happy enough to get forward when we have the ball, but not enough are willing to do enough defensively. Partly that's the coach's fault, but accountability when you don't have the ball is something taught from the Under 10s up. Knights shouldn't have to explicitly say it.

Franklin is virtually the target for 50% of any ball that goes into their forward 50 (statistically), he's going to kick goals on any backman regardless of who is on them, such as Silvagni and Scarlett... although being out of the game for a number of years I think Silvagni may struggle to keep Nathan Thompson from kicking 10 goals! :D

The point I was making is that the area we need to tighten is the defensive pressure from the midfield before we can even consider playing Ryder in a Scarlett type role.

Franklins are a one in a hundred year players, but thanks Dx ;)
He will be good up back one day, he has his days where he keeps JBrown to a goal.
Never know if we get Hurley and it turns out that Tayte Pears is better than we thought down back it may be a different story. Also Dx watch out for Gumbleton, he is the only player in Essendon with similar attributes to Buddy like body use and goal precense.

An injury free run and a stable line up would help also, you could see a little evidence of that in our winning streak, although we were still losing players.

The players with mass potential, Ryder, Gumbleton and co. need to believe they are awesome to get the best out of themselves.

If what Tayte Pears said about playing on Buddy was true we could have a real good player on our hands

Forgive my ignorance, what is the crux of what Pears said of playing on Franklin?
