Star North Melbourne midfielder Daniel Wells is still up to three weeks away from playing as his recovery from a foot injury continues to be slower than expected.

Wells has not played since North's round five match against Collingwood after injuring his right foot in the lead-up to that game when teammate Drew Petrie accidentally trod on it at training.

Wells' injury was initially diagnosed as bone bruising, but when it failed to improve after rest he underwent a weight-bearing X-ray last month that revealed he had a Lisfranc injury (when one or more of the metatarsal bones are displaced from the tarsus).

Wells has returned to the training track in recent weeks, with the Roos listing him as being one to two weeks away from a return last week.

That estimate blew out to two to three weeks on Tuesday, but a North spokesman told AFL.com.au that was merely because the club was taking a conservative approach to Wells' recovery.

"Wells is taking a little longer (than expected) but there's been no setback as such," the spokesman said.

Jamie Macmillan and Taylor Garner's return dates from long-term injuries have also been pushed back by the Roos, again as part of a conservative approach to their rehabilitation.

Macmillan broke his right fibula in round three against Port Adelaide, with North initially expecting him to return in four to six weeks.

North last week listed Macmillan's likely return date as round 14 or round 15, but that has now been pushed back to round 15 or 16.

Garner has yet to play at any level this season after struggling to overcome a left hamstring tendon injury he suffered in North's NAB Cup loss to Hawthorn in February.

North listed the second-year forward as being a chance to play last round subject to a fitness test, but now say he is another one to two weeks away from playing.

Meanwhile, North ruckman Daniel Currie is set to miss two to three weeks with a small crack in his scapula, after being accidentally kneed in Werribee's loss to Essendon's VFL team last Sunday.

This has been a bad season for us injury wise, not in relation to other clubs but in relation to the high expectations we have of our medical and fitness staff. I realise that Wells' injury was just an accident (stupid drew) but it's a bit annoying that we didn't scan it properly the first week. He played with the injury! Surely that has made his time out longer.

Damn. We could really use Wells right now. There's only so much you can do with a midfield of genuine inside mids and Nick Dal Santo. :p

Just as well Drew has made up for it with his own strong performances in Wellsy's absence. :thumbsu:

Not at all surprised with Wellsy's extended delay, as I've said from the POV of someone who's had a similar injury. It takes time and his return will be when it feels right. Nothing can speed it up.

Shithouse year for injuries, accentuated by individuals whose form has been less than expected.

Good luck to all of the boys anyway.

Cue Caro with her 'I told you so' story when Saunders was first appointed re having a non doctor in charge of this area. We have had a great run and I suppose eventually the bubble has to burst. Luck plays a big part.

Surely Caro will be treading a little carefully around Steve Saunders related topics..

Career threatening.

Not f***ing good!!!!

Cool your jets.

All the journo did was notice that the 1-2 weeks estimated return was revised to 2-3 weeks and wrote a whole article on it.

It is frustrating but it happens at all clubs to many players.

Happens at our club all the time.

Surely not every player has their injury underestimated?

He hasn't had a set back ''as such''. We're simply taking ''a conservative approach''. It's all on track and humming along beautifully.

It's the "type" of injury which makes it career threatening. Not the fact it got revised from 2 to 4 weeks.
