the ground is in perfect nick, a lot of the old stands have been taken down so it pretty much the primary building structure and that is sound.

the carpark is quite spacious although I dont think it would hold more than say 2,000 vehicles.

So, Cranbourne or Port Melbourne saints fans? I would've thought Port as it is closer to St Kilda. Although geography doesnt matter as much these days it would help maintain some "spirituality" in a home sense.

As someone else said, Junction Oval would be good.

I agree, the Junction Oval has so much potential and it is the heart and soul of St Kilda. This would return the saints to their spiritual home.

Would be fantastic to go and watch a St Kilda reserves game at the Junction in an expanded AFL competition. I'd be there with bells on.

An first-rate upgrade of the Junction Oval would be great for St Kilda and for Melbourne in general. It looks a miserable place at the moment and what a prominent site! Butterss, Fox and others with some drive and influence could see this a reality.
Casey Fields is half-way to Phillip Island - like asking the Bulldogs to go to Craigieburn.

Port Melbourne is obviously favourable from a geographical perspective, but the City of Casey is a booming area.

I play Cricket around there, and the junior numbers coming from that area are astronomical.

Cranbourne, Berwick, Narre Warren - massive growth areas.

If you live in the inner suburbs - it's about a half an hour drive.

Yes. Strange people, local councillors. If the Pokies move to Cranbourne, then as far as Council is concerned, they are gone, and become somebody elses social problem.

Heard on the radio their chief referring to them as a "bayside" club...thats the way they see themselves and their history...SE melb "bayside" their home.

I imagine Pot Melb would fit into that...does Casey ?...and why would they move out to the sticks ?...where's the advantage ?

Just heard Archie Fraser (I think the Saints CEO) on SEN, and he made a couple of other valid points, mainly centred around the impact of having a national sporting team based in the area.

Children having the opportunity to have players at schools / clinics
Players visiting local hospitals
Exposure of the area nationally


I'm in the area and read the local paper, and it seems that this issue has been going back and forth for a while, with the council being a bit stubborn on a number of minor details which had seemed to be agreed upon unti this latest back flip.

Although I'd love the Saints to stay at Moorabbin where its easy to pop in for a kick and mingle with players before/ during / after training, I can see the advantages of moving if there are better opportunities elsewhere.

I recall some old Magpies being a bit distraught when the Pies moved from their 'spiritual home' at Victoria Park - but look at what they have now. Every club in Victoria would love to have those kind of facilities. Sometimes to move forward, you just have to leave the emotion out of it.

Collingwood is by far the most common jumper and alleigance, maybe as many as 1/3.

Other teams well represented are Richmond, essendon, suprisingly large number of Geelong supporters

but maybe a hang over from when saints used to play at Waverley but 1/6 to 1/7 are st kilda jumpers.

with a million people living east of warrugul road and maybe 250k people in casey and another 60k people in cardinia, and your still not far from frankston and dandenong, thats a lot of untapped potential.

I reckon if you built a stadium, maybe with a capacity of around 70k, somehwere in the SE suburbs, it would relatively cheap to run and make a profit everytime you got more tahn 15k people there, and 30k ppl plus attendences would be a big financial boost, and with the marquee games you'd get maybe 65k people.

I don't think they are contemplating a new stadium - just a home ground with first rate training facilities - like Waverley Park. The population shift is to the S.E. but it removes the Saints from their traditional Melbourne base.

I wouldn't think the Saints would be concerned with the lease. They will just keep the Pokies there. Most of those council leases are fairly inexpensive from a club perspective, particularly with the social club there anyway.

The council don't win from this. In effect the Saints will keep the site as a pokie venue, and no redevelopment occurs. The council get a few dollars which gets put back into the maintaining the oval and grounds anyway.

I think outer suburbs have the potential to sustain a club that one day plays and is based out that way but I think a club with a strong inner suburb supporter base would lose a fair bit of that economic support if the social club facilities were moved to an outer suburb.

If a stadium was built out there and they played games there I think it would be a license to print money but not sure how it would go as just a training/social club base.

Dandenong Hospital is where that little baby was left on the front step. Maybe the Saints could do the same with Hamill and hope some kind hearted person takes him.

its a bit hard the missus isn't there every week as she often works sunday or is recovering from nightshift (nurse!) I have a 6yo and 7yo and 1yo, so where as I would love to, i can't at this stage.

I do help with the 'drills' like pass the balls back and stuff and I do stay to encourage the kids.

wouldn't mind being an auskick coach, its more fun than anything.

although some of the coaches take themselves too seriously 99% of them do it for fun and really make sunday mornings the best day of the week for the kids.

what is miserable about it ? I love the old heritage stands. Has a great atmosphere. Check it out around Community Cup time, the place is chockers. All it needs is one of the stands done up and an office erected and wala, you have a new home for the saints.

I hope the Saints fans who happen to live in Kingston see fit to get rid of this council...what right does a council have to dictate to a club or anyone else what should happen in regards to any planning.

The proposal, when put up for public discussion, had just 3 submissions opposing it.

Also, any other club that has a long term lease with it's respective local council arrangements has their houses in order vis-a-vis the respective leases they have.
