Saints hard hit by injury

The Western Bulldogs have a well-documented depleted stock of ruckmen, but the addition of Justin Koschitzke to St Kilda's injury list has the Saints facing a similar dilemma.
Koschitzke has been indefinitely sidelined with a fractured skull and with Cain Ackland out of touch and fellow big men Fergus Watts and Barry Brooks both sidelined by injury, Jason Blake - who is 189cm tall - could have to shoulder much of the ruck burden on his own.
The Saints' only other option is rookie Michael Rix, a 25-year-old ruckman who has not debuted since being picked up by the Saints in the 2005 NAB AFL Draft.
In other injury woes for the club, defender Xavier Clarke - who missed 12 games last year due to hamstring and quadriceps problems - will be sidelined for at least six weeks after having a hip arthroscope last week, while his brother Raphael will have to sit out another fortnight with a quadriceps strain.
A leg injury to James Gwilt - who was valuable for the Saints in last year's finals as a replacement defender - will see him watching from the stands for another six weeks.
Add to this list Luke Ball, who although contributing soundly, is not playing to near full capacity yet.
We are sufferring from injuries to a few players, but it is not the end of the world. We have endured considerably worse and kept winning. This is when our depth players have an opportunity to stand up and make a claim for a more permanent role.
The good news is that the rest of our squad is up and running now.
Players like Leigh Fisher and Mark McGough have overcome their injuries and are performing well in the Casey Scorpions. Fringe players are making their claim too, Ferguson, Peckett, Powell, Gilbert and Rix are also putting their hands up.
