Good effort overall but we butchered too many chances, had too many passengers (Saad, Templeton and Newnes all very disappointing) and we had the umpires screwing us yet again.

It was definitely a winnable game so disappointing not to get over the line but there were still quite a few positives though, Bruce and Savage the two standouts from our recent recruits and Lonie, Sinclair and Membrey all showed some good signs too.

The old guard of Riewoldt, Schneider, Montagna, Armitage, Steven, Geary. Dempster and Fisher all contributed well and led the way for us.

If we can keep up that sort of effort and get some of our better players back from injury we'll trouble plenty of sides this year.

Eli quite ghostly as well.

Decent effort though.

Crucified by the umps in the third and fourth Q.

Still had plenty of chances.

Bruce, Steven, Savage - very good

Bruce and Savage weren't named in the best players, but Roberton was. Hmm....
Still not entirely sure why Robbo was subbed off.

Not enough output from too many today.

Eli, I haven't seen him do much all pre season, time to go back and get some ball.
Saad is he a leading forward or a crumber? We he needs to get out of the way of the tall leading forwards, and get ready to crumb and play others in, stop holding on to it ffs.
Delaney, GWS forwards too youthful and nimble for him. I reckon Delaney is a great defender, but today Goddard may have been a better option!
Dunstan, couldn't get in to it.
Newnes, hard at it but cost us two or three goals with ill discipline. Probably hurt us the most.

I look forward to McKenzie, Acres and Billings coming in for Eli, Saad and someone. Maybe Hickey for Longer.

Was wrapped with that, I had feared it might be a flogging. A couple of points:

-I admit I was wrong on Josh Bruce. I have wanted him down back, but have come around. Stoked and somewhat surprised with his game today:)
-Membrey missed some opportunities, but he was serviceable. I would keep him in the side for an extended period to give him an extended crack at it;
-Big call, but Jack Lonie could be turn out to be the best of our draft picks this year. I love this kid. Already one of our most composed players;
-Jack Steven is underrated by some on here. He is a gun and our best player outside of Reiwoldt by a mile!
-Fitness definitely looks to be improved, we seem to be running games out. I like it!
-Shane Savage was epic today!
-Shenton was terrible, gave away 2-3 goals as he always does. I don't care if he got plenty of the ball or won a couple of battles he has zero football I.Q, and every time he gets it I hold my breath. Just don't get it Richo, why sub out Robbo over Shenton? We will be a 3 goal better side when he is replaced by Webster.
-Sinclair should get a full game next week, and Saad can make way for Billings;
-Early days, but I don't see GWS playing finals this year. It is not that easy to go from 4 wins to 12-13.

Saad and Eli might get the axe, Shenton probably should, and Billings to come in.

Our midfield needs pace pace pace!

And Tom Bugg is an absolute dog. Straight to the Tribunal for that if there's any substance to it whatsoever; Roo was taken to hospital with whiplash for Christ's sake.

The entire back line was horrible today, perhaps with the exception of Delaney (no support when required).

Too many poor disposals caused by self-induced pressure through trying to play on without feasible options.

Edit: Thinking back, Roberton wasn't that bad, but did contribute somewhat to the aforementioned scenario.

No that comment was at 3qtr time, and I stand by that. But the final qtr was abysmal!!

I actually thought the first and second quarter were almost as bad as the 4th quarter. The 3rd quarter wasn't too bad.

Acres and Billings should come in next week. Webster probably needs a bit more time but he should replace Shenton. I actually don't mind what Shenton brings to the table but some of his disposals were just disgraceful.

I didn't think Longer was too bad but I would be pretty happy to see Hickey come into the side. Too many times there was no ruckman at stoppages, though that may partially be Bruce's fault. Sinclair should play a full game next week.

Take a look at the way Tim Membrey went about it today & remember that Tim is only 4 months older than Spencer White, yet has a million times more endeavour & a million times less natural talent than Spencer.

Thoroughly impressed with Timmy's debut for us today... Just needs to hold those marks!!!

Saad Was horrible. Meant to be a Small Forward and he cant pick the ball up off the ground.
Eli didn't do Enough.
Newnes needs more Pace was Late to the ball most the time and forever chasing tail.
We need 2 Rucks our forward structure falls apart when Bruce goes into the Ruck. Play Hickey!
Longer showed Glimpses but was beaten often.
Shenton is either a good kick or he absolutely shanks it and causes a turnover which leads to a goal.
Roberton was good not sure why he was subbed? (also had 100% disposal efficiency from 13 disposals)
Thought Schides and Savage were 2 of our best.

Not hard to see why Lonie and Sinclair debuted. You simply can't put a price on players who make the right decisions and then execute the skill (dribble kick for goal aside!) and they both do it. Got two beauties there.

Membrey good in his second AFL game. Spilled some easy marks but should hold onto them eventually.

My boy Savage best on. Even a goal from 50m out on the boundary if you don't mind and gave us plenty of run.

Bruce will only get better as a forward.

Very proud of how the boys lifted in the last quarter, particularly after Rooey went off. The Saints fans were right behind them, chanting, bagging the umps (deservedly), and appreciating every effort.
Sav and Josh Bruce were just magic out there today and have become a lock, no matter where they line up.
Fantastic to see the two Jack debutants show a bit of pezazz. They're gonna be rippers.
Can't wait for Billings, Webster and Gilbert to return in the next few weeks
