Cats forking it out

How much money do you think Geelong is up for to honor the contracts of those All Australians who get a bonus for making the team.

they could be looking at a six figure sum which will cut into our salary cap.

not the greatest news with new Moon and Johnno contracts this season plus about eight more next year coming out of contract.

Re: Cats forking it out

No need to worry about this year then.

Monns has already signed (befre the contract ban) SJ will stay.

Milburn wont want to move, and who cares abut king :p

hopefully they will all want to stay just to be around a winning andsuccessful culture rather than the bigger bucks they will probably have flashed in front of them at a West Coast or Collingwood for example.

Re: Cats forking it out

Milburn is on the Veterans list so his pay doesn't count for the salary cap...Is King getting close to the veterans list now? That would make some room.

King debuted in 1996, he surely qualifies as both a 10-year veteran, unless you have to be over 30 also, which he will only do in November 2008.

King should be on Vets pay now I'd suggest. However I doubt he will continue if he is overlooked for the Prelim and GF if we get through.

SJ will stay and Moons has already signed.

Remember, some cap space will be made once the club sorts out what to do with the VFL guys, i.e. Hank, Gardiner, Spence etc. That will free up a little space I'd suggest, but I don't think we will get rid of all of them.

Big H has improved as a backman, and I believe we should keep him as the KPB in case things go wrong on the injury front. Sure he stuffed it against port with one disposal, but he did shut down Tredrea when moved onto him.

I'd suggest that because of his versatility he will be kept, over the other guys anyway.

King, Scarlett, and Harley qualify for the veteran's list in 2009.

It's why talk of simply having Davenport as the nominated rookie (and taking up the empty would-be veteran spot, hence not unecessarily 'wasting' a senior list spot ie. resourcefulness) has surfaced on more than one occasion.

In yesterdays Herald Sun they have said that this year Steve Johnson, Cameron Mooney, Steven King and Darren Milburn are all out of contract. (BTW they are just reporting on the bigger name players), we shouldn't have too much trouble signing them under the cap, but next year we coule be in trouble. All of these players are out of contract after 2008:
James Bartel
Matthew Egan
Cameron Ling
Matthew Scarlett
Paul Chapman
James Kelly
Joel Corey
Brad Ottens
Corey Enright
Joel Selwood
Among others most likely

So will the players take cuts next year so the team can fit under the cap, I think it could be a big issue trying to sign them all next year.

If the players are 100% serious about being a team, and being a contender than they will all be paid less then their value. If they want $$ more than success, piss them off we don't need them at our club.

Yeah, similar to what Brisbane did. And look at how many flags they managed to produce!

Lol and Buckley missed out on every single one of em. :D

You will have to cut a few loose, thats the way this system works, either this year or next year. Who will get ditched?

Should be trading for higher picks for sustained success.

Isn't there a salary cap increase at the end of this year (as flow on from media cash)?

If managed correctly this should help any exodus as there will be room for some increases over the next couple of years if managed correctly and players dont get too greedy.

Maybe some of the top line players can have additional income allowed through more media appearances like what Aka has done (hopefully not to the same extend where they become *****).

Dont recruit any big name players ie Judd as they will put even more pressure on the salary cap instead keep to the draft so you have kids at bottom end salaries until you can see if they are going to be any good.

Win a premiership so players want to stay together and win more. They are more likely to play for slightly less cash if this is the case.

Go for the NAB & Premiership double. That gives them an extra 1 million to play with.

I bumped this because i was looking at my 2003 grand final footy record and it showed that Harley and Scarlett both had a debut in 1998.

Would this make them come under the Veterans list?

btw. This record questions how long Bomber can live with a 'promising' side after finishing 12th.

Players are eligible if:

a) They've been at the AFL Club on the Primary List for at least 10 years
and
b) The Player is/is turning 30 years of age or older during the upcoming season (cut-off date Sept 30)

King, Harley and Scarlett qualify in 2009.
