Not too sure of the mechanics of this whole 'Salary Cap' malarkey. Does our total player budget get diminished by us finishing Top 4? How does Geelong have to suddenly cut their players' salaries because they win the GF (or is it just because their managers want more...)?

Would be grateful if someone could shed a little more light on how this mysterious processes is decided upon.

I'd say it's because some of their players need new deals, and will obviously demand more money.

Salary Cap stays the same, AFL do adjust for inflation etc, so upwards.
The reason why they would need to cut players, would be because players values go up after premierships, 13-14 all-australians into a 8mil cap is tough unless players accept values less than market.
Player managers of course will always be on the hunt for more money, i'd say Geelong will cut those guys on a bit of coin but are sitting on the fringe.
Harley retiring would help.

In the case of some teams, if you have a wealthy benefactor, you can woo players from other clubs into your fold by paying them a portion of their salary under the salary cap, then you can give them 'jobs' and give them the real financial reward effectively off the books.

No who would do such a darn thing as that.

Shall we be seeing Joel Selwood and Gary Ablett as Costa Fruit Wholesaling ambassadors?

I heard from a Geelong supporter mate that Ford were helping out Ablett. Not sure in what regard. Maybe Lexus can start tipping in, payment style.
