Apologies if this has been covered but just wondering what everyone's thoughts were regarding our salary cap room?

Over the last year or 2 I've seen media outlets mentions we didn't have much room to move in the cap, but I would now think we have ample room to chase a big name. We may have paid overs to attract players like Young and White, but we have cut some big contracts from our list recently and with the names thrown up for trade I think we could have $1m+ available.

Having a stab at yearly salary of the names we've lost over the last 2 seasons and possibly this trade period my guesses would be (approx.):

Maxwell $300-400k
Ball $300-400k
Lynch $200k
Lumumba $300k
Beams $400-600k
Shaw $300-400k
Thomas $300-400k
Johnson $200-300k
Didak $300-400k
Jolly $300k

These are massive guesses, but taking into account new recruits and contract renewals I still think we would have a lot of money to play with.

We should be chasing that big name on a ridiculous contract. Whenever a big name is being rumoured to have been offered a big contract it's always another club willing to splash the cash. If we honestly believe we have some good kids we should look at getting a star in the 23-26y.o. bracket and give them a big salary, and front-load it so we have room to move in future years. Stop trying to rely on 'moneyball' reject pick ups and Hine draft specials.

We are and his name is Patrick Dangerfield.

I don't believe for a second we are any hope of getting him.

If he were to be traded I can only see Melbourne being his destination, or he'll wait until next year to get to Geelong.

But besides, the main point I was getting at with my original posts was asking what everyone thought we had available in the cap.

We have plenty of cap space, Hine intimated as much at the club forum which was before the Beams situation. He said they were saving it for when we are in contention for a flag.

But with the future departure of such an integral part of our midfield in Beams, and a frustrated supporter base starved of recent success. I think getting that big fish has now become a priority, despite the fact most people wouldn't have us contending for top 4 next year.

Man, I'd hope that's not the case. Taking that approach tells me they're happy with the list in it's current make-up and think that this list will get us close to a premiership.

That's exactly what they think, Hine was interviewed on trade radio the other day and said "We're very bullish about our list, we think it's in a good place".

I don't totally share his view but it's also not as bad as some make out. We have some 24 and under players that I think will be real quality and some that already are, I would say Elliot, Grundy, Adams, Witts, Sidebottom, Broomhead and Langdon have shown they are/will be be 1-10 ranked players on our list.
You could make a case for Scharenberg and Freeman but they don't have enough exposed form.

We need more than that, a few high quality key position players and mids to join that mix. Darcy Moore potentially being one that does that.

I don't think our list is horrible. We have some good kids. But I can't see it, in it's current form, improving beyond any team in the top 4-6. All those teams also have some promising kids.

Danger will not go this year club will not allow it they will hope the new coach can get them to finals and keep him

Keep the cap space and we might be a chance next year

I'm very bullish on our list. Yes other teams like Freo, Hawthorn, Sydney and Geelong also have some good kids BUT they also have an unhealthy number of players in the 30+ age group. It is not just that they have these players, but the fact that as we saw in the GF, they are heavily reliant upon them. Look what happened to St Kilda when they lost a heap of their old guys after 2010 GF. Swanny will be the oldest guy (31 in Feb) on our list by a fair way in 2015. Young next (28) and then you drop down to a cluster of 26-27 year olds. Very healthy age profile for sustained long term improvement and this for a team that was 8-3 at the halfway point of 2014.

Will our list be competing for a GF berth in 2015, unlikely, will it be there abouts in 2016, more than likely. There is not too much available in the FA market this year so why wouldn't the club stockpile cap space for the 2015 draft/trade period when they'll be closer to needing it?

Isn't there a new thing where if you only pay about 95% of your salary cap one year you are then allowed to pay up to 105% the following year?

I believe this is what we are doing, paying close to 95% (especially now Beams is gone) and loading up for when we can have a shot at a flag. We will probably be more aggressive at the end of next year and from then on then we will be in this trade period.

This trade period is all about limiting the loss of Beams, trying to get somewhere near break even by the end of the trade period.

I think this is exactly our strategy & you are right. You can use unspent cap from one year on future years.

I've also heard that we have hardly any cap space. If we are restricted, then how can hawthorn afford this:

10.071 million for next year.
600k - Roughead, Lewis, Mitchell, Hodge
500k - Frawley, Burgoyne, Gibson, Birchall
400k - Rioli, Gunston, Isaac Smith, Breust, Lake
300k - McEvoy, Hale, Hill, Suckling, Shiels, Stratton
150k - Duryea, Spangher, Puopolo, Ceglar, Langford, Litherland, Schoenmakers, Simpkin

4 * 600 = 2.4
4 * 500 = 2
5 * 400 = 2
6 * 300 = 1.8
8 * 150 = 1.2
26 players for a cost of 9.4 million

To fit the remaining 18 players on the list in they'd have to pay them 33k a piece and that likely includes guys like Hallahan, Woodward, Anderson, Cheney and Whitecross!!! Even if Lake goes it still doesn't free up enough cap to pay the draft scale minimums.

It all doesn't make any sense...

God i hope your so wrong, and i can come back and say so.. (Thought i doubt you would care if we had really just picked up "Dangerfield" lol)

That bloke has pulled that out of his arse.

Lake will be moved on, Frawley takes his spot in the cap. Simple really.

The salaries he gave made sense. Although you have to take into account some players get paid more than expected, and others get less.

Don't quote me on it, but I remember a Hawthorn official saying will stay regardless of Frawley going to the Hawks.

Yeah, they seem about right. However, you've gotta take into account players have their contracts front and back ended as well, so its far too difficult to predict how much a team is paying without knowing 100%.

It's more so not wasting our money on a gun when we won't be a contender. Wait until we're hitting our straps again and then strike on a top line player.

Beams is on 350-400k.
He signed on in 2012 before his market value went up. It was reported at 1.1m for 3 years at the time.
If he leaves next year as a free agent we won't get much compo for him on account of him not being in our top pay bracket.

Good thread. A few that I heard.

Q was reportedly on $280k
Jolly was more like $400-500
Thomas - similar bracket.
I suspect even Didak would have been on more given when he's last contract was done.

Countering this, we've certainly loaded up on Ben Reid, Pendles, etc of late, but absolutely agree we should have a war chest to just go whack.
