So if Stevens retires & the AFL allows his 400k for next year to be taken from the injury fund rather than count against the 2010 salary cap & if the Lions pay most of / all of Fev's salary, does that mean that the Blues will have loads of room in the 2010 salary cap?

If so how wil it be spent?

<troll>Paying out some of Judd's Visy contract.</troll> ;)

Probably your group of six or so star kids will get tied up in 3-4 year longer-term deals...with some pretty big numbers in year 1 or 2.

Losing Fev (for presumption of picks) will concentrate your 'window' of opportunity a little better. Short term pain for long term gain kind of thing. Kind of makes the Ju$$ acquisition a little worse though, as he'll be pushing 28/29 by the time the next tier come through.

(or it could be thrown on Bradshaw and another 'name' player - which would keep you thereabouts in the 4-8 mark).

Yes, we'll have a ****load if the Stevens contract doesn't count in the salary cap and if Brisbane take most, if not all of Fevola's.

The bigger picture to see here is that we could EASILY lure a big name player after next season, and comfortably outbid most, if not all clubs.

Thanks J:thumbsu:

The problem is with no free agency how much you can offer doesn't mean as much as what you can offer in a trade.

I'd think that Bradshaw would be on some serious coin (as at the time of his last contract negotiations Geelong offered him 450K to come down to Sleepy Hollow) and Riska would be on 250-300K.

Pretty sure Bradshaw is eligible for our veterans list so it may make sense for both club if they retain the other player's contracts - thereby minimizing the amount paid under the cap. For the resident salary cap experts (can't count myself in this illustrious group) is this possible?

For the next two years at least (assuming that's how long Bradshaw plays before he retires) I would assume not as Bradshaw's salary + Riska's salary = Fev's salary (possibly even a bit more). After that I would agree with your point. Unless I'm missing something?
