No doubt Berry has improved as he back to being clean below his knee unlike mid last year and has shown a burst of speed, also has the ability to fly for a mark but he needs to continue this development next year to even be consider a late 1st rounder.
If he is ever worth a first rounder you wouldn't want to trade him

This is true. Last 10 games or so he's been really good. If he does that for another season, no way would we want him gone as we hopefully are in some kind of window now...

Looks to be making the most of his opportunities in the middle.

Beautiful left foot goal on the run.

The biggest difference this year is he is not fumbling & appears to be stronger around the contest as well as having that burst of speed.

Taken Crouch's spot.
You wouldn't trade Berry right now

He has been there for 5 years now and 2022 had a high CBA role and was pushed out as soon as they had any decent player in,

Again he is a good role player at best not a bad thing but you don't give up first rounders and 800k salary for depth players
People develop at different rates. He looks ready to take the next step for mine.

Us paying Hawks first rounder is probably overs but it's a calculated risk. (we'd have to pay him and the club likely a bit overs but he'd get a guaranteed role, in his favourite position. We'd potentially get he best of him.)

From Eagles perspective as a trade id do something like pick 2 and 32 to Essendon for pick 5 and 6 and then say pick 6 for Berry and 17

Adelaide would have a incentive to move Berry on to grab one of the Adelaide born KPPS in the top 10

That’s the kind of trade you would only do if you were confident the guy you’d most want at 2, would drop to 5.

Unless part of NWM deal. ;)
Scary thing is even if the crows some how a top 5 pick from west coast , North Melbourne, Richmond, Essendon or Melbourne, NWM won't be taken cheaply.

You can propose pick 1, 2026 1st rounder , 2027 1st rounder, Sam Berry and one of your tall forwards in Fogarty or Tilthorpe, saints would still knock it back.

That's just nonsensical.

No wonder you guys traded pick 2 for 8 and 12 and pick 3 last year lol.
Nothing wrong with trading pick 2 for picks 8 and 12. As long as you nailed the picks.

Dockers in 2016 traded pick 3 for Cam McCarthy, pick 8, 32 and 72.

8 ended up as Griffin Logue, 32 ended up as Brennan Cox or Sean Darcy and 72 ended up with Luke Ryan.

Imagine the crows traded pick 6 and 42, your 1st and 3rd for picks 11, 36 and 60.

Pick 11 ended up as Nasiah Wanganeen Milera, 36 ended up as Jake Soligo and pick 60 ended up as a dud pick.

I looked up his career and contract situation.

Again.... Sam Berry would be stupid to leave the crows this season unless a Victorian club gives him a 4 or 5 year deal on big money.

My prediction is since he is out of contract in 2026, that's his 6th year.

He will sign a 2 year deal until 2028 with one eye on free agency

NWM will get to the team he selects, but doubt it will be the Crows.

If he does select the Crows, there is no chance a player like Thilthorpe or Fogarty will be traded out! Both locals who grew up supporting the Crows.

We would use 2x 1st rounders as the starting point. May involve one of young Victorian talents.

Why does it have to be a Victorian club?
Why can't we offer 5yrs @850 (if we believe in him)

Yes it's possible but lesser chance of picking up elite talent further down the draft order especially outside the top 4.

Because that is an absurd amount of money for a limited footballer
I don't he's limited, he's just starting to hit his potential now.

Wed have to pay perceived overs to get him to WA but I believe the ceiling/value is there.

From here, the debate is circular as we vote his talent and ceiling as two different things.

I'm at work right now but it would be an interesting exercise to isolate his stats from this year, when playing midfield alone

It would be the same as doing Zac Williams when he was at GWS or Pat Lipinski when he was at the Dogs,

Looks good surrounded by stars the second they have to do it regularly it doesn't look as good and they get pushed back to their default role player mode,

Happens all the time

I don't agree.

Different player types, different roles.

The one advantage of being a clearance/contested player is that you get to set the tone first. Your less reliant on others and game style overall.

I'd say more akin to Josh Kennedy. Hawks to Sydney.

Tom Mitchell perhaps another

So a nowadays dime a dozen inside accumulator like Will Phillips/Elijah Tsatas/Riley Garcia/Henry Hustwaite?

Inside clearance players are a dying breed for a reason they have no versatility

Unfortunately, for Berry, he has shown some versatility. Hence is still solid as a HFF but it's a CB mid where I believe his A game is.

He also doesn't have major deficiencies like those other guys.

I actually think that Shoenberg would be a good get for WC. He can play at AFL level, has been in ripping form in SANFL, would come cheap, and his age profile is perfect.

Haven't West Coast suffered enough?

I don't think he's worth a first rounder personally.
If Adelaide get an A grade mid in trade this offseason I'm not convinced Berry gets a game next year.

I'm not convinced he gets games next year regardless.

Dan Curtin is coming in like a bullet and there is Draper in the wings.

I disagree. Now is the perfect time to trade Berry, from a list management standpoint. He has value, contracted and we have an potential superstar in the wings who is making a serious run for the position. After all, with every passing week it looks more and more likely Dan Curtin is going to be a starting inside midfielder soon (especially as he got 50% CBA's on the weekend and killed it in the monsoonal conditions).

Whilst depth is handy, this isn't someone we should be fighting to retain if another club is desperate.
