If you are someone who believes in Sam Berry as a full time AFL midfielder, you have absolutely no clue about football and probably should delete your account (again). Zero football IQ. Considering he doesn’t get the ball even in pointless home and away games and is a defensive specialist, his “efforts” on Newcombe early were even more astoundingly bad.

Again, Nicks created this with moronic coaching, but still. If Sam Berry is in the side by the time the whips are cracking in 2026, we’re going nowhere.

Shocking. He was banished from the midfield by the end of tonight's game ge was that bad.

For such a big lad he gets pushed off the ball too easily and seems to have a really high centre of gravity.

He only plays because hes supposed to be our pressure player and he sucked at that tonight

Should be trade bait but I don't know what we'd get for him

He's not a starting midfielder in a competing team. Doesnt have sufficient weapons

Berry: 3 tackles for the entire finals series. What a defensive beast. But hey, at least he averaged 12 touches. Fraud.
2-3 years ago he had as many tackles as anyone in the game, and weve suddenly tried turning him into an offensive midfielder

He was highly offensive last night, the full range of my vocabulary came out.

What happened to the maniacal defensive pressure from his first few years???

Didn’t he average nearly 10 tackles a game early in his career?

We could use a defensive minded mid to balance the attacking players like Dawson, Rankine etc but his defensive work seems to have fallen off a cliff.

Blame Nicks for not putting a hard tag on Newcombe. Berry wasn’t a hard tag, we don’t coach that way.

Even if I accept it wasn't a hard tag, Berry was standing next to Newcombe at those opening stoppages and he got towelled up

I personally think he was trying to hard tag him but was diabolically bad at it

He was standing next to him no doubt, but the instruction from the coaches wasn’t “don’t worry about the ball, ensure he doesn’t get it” it’s not how we roll.

He has this thing about him like he gets on the back foot at stoppages and then acts like "oh, oh ****" when his opponent is on the move and snaps up the ball and is gone. It's watching a grades down player try go up against the top. 🤦‍♂️

Berry lost the first 3 stoppages of the game to Newcombe.

I thought that was enough to put Dawson onto him or at least hard tag him. But nope, Dawson went to him I think in the 4th quarter or late in the 3rd when the game was already over.

I dont rate a lot of David Kings overanalysis of the game, but he said this week "Dawson has to go to Newcombe"

And he did so a few weeks ago and single handedly got us back into the game.

So why not last night.
