You know we've got a good prospect on our hands when the AFL website is already highlighting him after his 3rd game

As tough as they come

He’s the prototype we needed. Tough as nails and knows how to tackle! Seems to love the rough stuff and has natural mongrel. If he can remain composed near goals, he’s going to be excellent value for us.

I like that Nicks is playing him forward. Really adds a lot of defensive pressure in the forward line.

Plus it's a long season. Hopefully that allows Berry to get more games.

Playing a mid up forward is good again ??

I like what he brings

Sam is holding up alright so far, considering the lack of football last year.

I'm also looking forward to once he gets more midfield minutes. Don't think I've seen anything that's dissuaded me from thinking he'll end up a very good piece in that midfield rotation.

He's tracking really well. Needs to tidy up his goal kicking but he should be playing in the middle anyway. Love his defensive pressure. Some more experience and confidence at the level and his attacking side will start to develop. His defensive game has been consistent but we saw glimpses of his attack on the footy in the first half of the Hawks game and I liked what I saw.

I'd like him more if he could actually kick the ball properly
He will be fine.

He's gone from bottom age U18 player, to playing League AFL. He basically didn't play for 18 months in between. It's a massive jump.
What he has managed to do so far is actually incredible.

Yup. I think he's starting to make a pretty solid case for being one of those players who would have ended up somewhere in the first round (if not the bottom end of the top 10 as the ceiling) if a U18 season happened in Victoria.

After all, he's certainly holding up well compared to other Victorian midfield prospects.

I'm pretty sure as soon as we drafted him Mutineer made that exact point.

I do remember that or something along those lines. That call is certainly aging like fine wine at the moment.

Like others I’m hopeful for both Berry and Pedlar. However I’m concerned that we overlooked the highly mobile ball magnet and excellent ball user in Tom Powell.

We seem to strongly prefer slow hard inside mids (subject to good personal character) with average disposal skills. For me it would have been preferably been Powell and Berry OR otherwise Pedlar and Poulter. Hopefully Cook brings something completely different.

Don’t want to see 5 more years of dumb, high, kick it forward without looking panic kicks and/or players that are solely in the team for their pressure and tackling. The current lack of spread to make position when we have the ball is appalling - as is our kicking to advantage.

Powell was long gone by the time we picked Berry, and I certainly couldn't begrudge us wanting to rebuild our inside brigade seeing how bad it was for us in 2020 (and really, it's been held together by duct tape since we lost Dangerfield). Both will go a long way to achieving that, alongside Schoenberg who should end up a damn good midfielder in his own right. Berry in particular is looking like a steal at 28.

Mind you, Pedlar certainly isn't sluggish at all, seeing his running goal against West Adelaide a few weeks ago. Line breaking abilities of young David there.

But no, seeing some of Pedlar games this year (the trials, and some of his SANFL games), I truly get why we went for Luke. If we can properly manage his injuries, and get him fit and healthy, he genuinely could be the star impact midfielder to build around. The floor is an injury-riddled mess though.

I thought the draft comparator for Pedlar was Toby Greene! That is a forward/mid type with a good leap. I reckon Berry is the classic mid: just look at his body compared with Pedlar's. The latter still has body buliding to do.

Possible, seeing Greene was a seriously good midfielder when GWS used him there as his primary role. Goes to show how ridiculous their start-up concessions were that they ended up being able to afford to have Toby as a forward, but I mean, you've got to make a combination of Shiel, Kelly, Cognilio, Taranto, Hopper etc work somehow.

It's pretty safe to assume both will end up as inside midfielders first, as I doubt we'll be able to afford the same luxury.

everything else has been good, his kicking has been shit, if he can fix that then he'll be a tank
