You know what. I would put a line through anyone that cant kick. It needs to be a minimum requirement in any new player that comes to the club.
Agreed, hawthorn drafted players that could kick for about 4-5 years, now they are almost impossible to get the ball off. Should be our focus

I think anyone who suggests recruiting or drafting someone who can't kick should be banned. Have we not learnt anything?

I don't think there's anything particularly wrong with his kicking - shanks a few at full pace, often when trying to do too much, but, besides Ablett, there's not a player who doesn't. Dodgy left boot, but, again, that's hardly rare these days.

His issues are that he doesn't seem to be able to find the pill, and he's never really looked comfortable at AFL level. He often seems hesitant at the contest, and unsure of what he should be doing when he has the ball. I think he's afraid of making mistakes at the moment, as he's actually looked a fair bit worse lately than he did early in his career. He's had a ton of injury setbacks that have hurt his development. Plus he's at Melbourne, which probably also hurt his development.

We have a need for speed and he's one of the quickest in the league when fit. He showed early in his career that he's a goalkicker, too. He still has a lot of areas he needs to clean up, but I'd happily give him a go if we got him for nothing. I reckon if he could get one more full pre-season under his belt, he'd be a good shot at stepping up to the next level.

Yeah, probably fair enough. I'll admit that I haven't watched him regularly enough to have a good sense for just how bad his kicking is.

If it's actively a weakness, then probably not. If it's just "not a strength" then I have no objections.

We seem to have something against playing guys who can kick. I mean when it's such an obvious weakness of ours, you'd think we'd fast track the development of players with elite legs on our list, such as Grigg, but we don't.

Further to that.

Melbourne have had access to elite talent. Since 2007 - 2011 this a list of their top 10 picks and top 20 picks.

Top 10 - Cale Morton (#4), Jack Watts (#1), Scully (#1), Trengrove (#2),

Top 20 - Jack Grimes (#14), Blease (#17), Strauss (#19), Jordan Gysberts (#11), Tapscoptt (#18), Cook (#12).

Thats 10 players and not one of this elite picks would be any where near top 10 players at the finals clubs.

Melbourne destroy talent. Its why Roos is so keen to trade out draft picks for established for talent. If we go after anyone it should be Toumpas - who has only had two seasons being destroyed by Melbourne.

And yet they cry they need a priority pick....what a basket case.

More delist material

I don't mind us taking a punt on "maybes" that come cheap as long as we have plenty of delist material on our list already. We can't replace it all via a single draft, so we may as well exchange it for someone else that might come good in a new environment. And if he works out to be useless, well, he didn't cost us much and we can now delist him and continue using the draft to replenish the list.

You have to wonder if the problem lies with the recruiting staff, the development coaches, or both.

You would have to point the finger at the development. I understand there are draft failures, but it would be pretty tough statistically for a team to be this bad at developing players.

Even looking back to 2000.... They have had about 30 top 20 picks since then. Only Nathan Jones, Scott Thompson and Frawley can be considered genuine A graders.
