Thats a problem that doesnt exist. Who do you expect will up and go because Sam Draper got 150k more then he would have got elsewhre?

No-one at $150k. My point is its more like $350k a year more. Also combined with overpaying Allen it introduces risk.

Which clubs have done well after throwing huge amounts of money at players?

Richmond? They brought in Tom Lynch as a free agent, made Dusty Martin the highest paid player in the entire league all the while bringing in the likes of Dion Prestia, Toby Nankervis, Bachar Houli, Josh Caddy and so on.

Id ask you name me a team in recent times who won a flag without bringing in top free agents on big coin? Maybe Eagles in 2018 is it?

Clubs bring in players all the time whether from FA or from trade. In terms of massive pay for FA: Tigers won a flag before Lynch.

Demons in 2021. Pies in 2023? Dont remember if Howe was a FA but also Im not sure if he was brought in on big coin?

For Hawks Im not sure if Frawley was on massive money. The AFL always find a way to manipulate things so Melbourne getting band 1 doesnt necessarily mean we paid a lot. It just means the AFL fiddled things.

As will happen with Allen this year. We wont know what he earns and WCE getting band 1 doesnt mean its huge coin.

Brisbane won a flag before Allen/Draper? They are replicating the same thing but getting 2 players instead of 1.

Collingwood brought in McStay/Perryman/Membrey as free agents. If we are doing the comparisons id rather Allen/Draper then that trio too

You said "top". None of those Collingwood players are "top", surely?

Though I guess this thread is about Sam Draper so "top" would never be used to describe him either. Maybe some weeks he is the "tallest". So he has that.

Perryman deal will be more then Drapers one... So should count surely ?
Yeah Perryman was Band 1 and Draper is apparently looking at Band 2, so unless something crazy happens with Draper's offer Perryman will be getting more.

I think Brisbane's problem will be the cap in the next 2 years considering who they have to re-sign, and who is shaping as having cap space over the next 2 years. That doesn't mean that will stop them from trading, or even necessarily winning, it's just the cycle of teams losing depth players as they fill their cap in pursuit of flags, but it will be a factor for them over the next few years.

Geelong and Collingwood are looking at having cap space thanks to long term contracts already in place and retiring players and they are big fish.

Starcevich is already looking at being squeezed out this year, which is a hit, but can be dealt with as he hasn't played much anyway. They also need to re-sign Ah Chee and McKenna this year.
But then it gets interesting.

2026 they have Washcroft, Bailey, and Answerth. You'd assume Washcroft signs for slight unders but he will still be heavily pursued and will get a fat payrise. Bailey and Answerth will definitely be heavily pursued and the Lions will have to give them rises. Answerth especially if Starcevich leaves.
Neale finishes up in 2026 so that will free up some coin, but how much they will have to backend some contracts to fit everybody might eat that up, and if Neale stays on or retires or goes somewhere else will determine how much they have to spend.

2027 they have Wilmot, Lohmann, Morris coming out of contract who will all be heavily chased by everybody with cap space. They also have Marshall, Gallup, and Doedee out of contract that year, but that will depend on how they develop at the Lions as to how much they charge. Any of those latter three might leave for more opportunity or more money depending on how they're going.
The extra consideration for 2027 will be Tasmania. While their terms haven't been finalised, by all accounts they'll have extra money to throw around as signing bonuses for players, and will be able to sign out of contract players as though they were free agents, so you'd imagine they'll chase those guys pretty hard with money that Brisbane won't be able to match.

The Lions cap is going to be tight over the next few years, it probably is already, and signing Allen and Draper will just about top them off. So their player retention over the next 2 years will be very interesting.

I'm surprised they're chasing Draper and what it will do to their cap, when they could go a cheaper option like a Ned Reeves.

Negotiate away Sammy, my lad. You do drive a hard bargain Sir but you are worth every cent.

After Sammy meets ROB the AFL will need to bring in a mid-free agency rule change stating that payment in gold bullion and kurgerrands counts as part of the compo formula.

I reckon Brisbane supporters will be pleasantly surprised by this time next year.
Draper is a fantastic replacement over Day looking forward to see if Swanny does the AFL a favor now and allow 5 on the bench
name another time any club has managed to lure the two highest profile free agents in the same off season.

i'll wait.
The biggest free agent that's available already plays at the Lions in Starz I'M going to be pissed if we lose him

People truly cant look at the common sense scenario here

Brisbane add Sam Draper, Brisbane give up nothing - Tick
Brisbane drop Darcy Fort, add Sam Draper into best 22 - Double Tick
Brisbanes premiership chances improve - Triple tick

This is a big win for Brisbane.

Sam Draper is awful and injury prone. Your theory has a truck sized hole in it.

HHis manager leaking fake news.

We gave you keaysy and hinge against our will to better the Adelaide FC. It’s time to stand in front of this bullet for us.

You’ve dodged Petty and Oliver. You’ve had a good run. But it’s time now. Submit.

Meek has just resigned for 4 years. How do you rate Draper compared to Meek and what do you think Draper deserves?

My guess is Meek is on something like $700k growing to $800k over the 4 years. Possibly its $700k growing to $900k. So its above average but well below the numbers being thrown around for other ruck who are at a similar level or worse.
I would say Draper is better, especially based on this year’s match up. Meek is more reliable injury wise though.

I wouldn’t want my ruckman to be in the top 10% of my clubs payroll unless it’s prime Max Gawn

Starcevich isn't be squeezed out, he actively looking.

I doubt McKenna is offered a new contract.

Washcroft already has his contract extension, it just can't kick in until his fourth year.
Neale finishes up in 2026 so that will free up some coin, but how much they will have to backend some contracts to fit everybody might eat that up, and if Neale stays on or retires or goes somewhere else will determine how much they have to spend.
Neale will play on. Where is the question.
2027 they have Wilmot, Lohmann, Morris coming out of contract who will all be heavily chased by everybody with cap space. Doedee is on his last contract.

Gallop hasn't done anything yet to warrant a big contract.

Lies, all lies. I'm writing an email to the club as we speak.

Dear Justin Reid,
There appears to be some terrible rumours being floated around by some in the Victorian media that we are still interested in Sam Draper.

Can you please confirm this isn't the case, and could the club maybe put out a press release to this effect.

We fly as one
