All the best Gilbo…...you kept going way way longer than I thought you would.

Thought you were at the end of the road about 2012/2013 with injuries....but....you just kept going.

A loyal Sainter thru and thru right to the end.

I will miss however you trying to kick the ball to me in the crowd......lol.

GO SAINTS.

I’ve had a soft spot for Gilbert knowing this was likely his final year.

I’ve said it before but with him gone it feels like the real end of an era for when we came so so close. That was a great team and it was nice to have a link to that team running around.

Drove me crazy sometimes but he was loyal and gave it his all. Can’t ask for much more than that.

Plus thanks to him we got a classic Riewoldt and Zac Dawson photo that can remind us of better times.

News came through today that Sam wouldn't be offered a contract for 2019.

Polarizing player but his effort and commitment to the club can't be understated.

208 games over 13 years including three Grand Finals. A nicer bloke you wouldn't meet.

His goal during the 3rd term of the 1st 2010 GF, as we marched back from 24 points down at half-time, is one of my most memorable Saints moments. Crowd erupted, and the feeling within the MCG at that time was that we were well on our way to getting back in the game.

Some highlights...

Congratulations on a fantastic career at the Saints Gilbo.

Sam Gilbert is that friend who is like annoying 24/7, here and there he does the odd nice thing.

Hall of fame, in my opinion. Underrated, He was one of the best in his position during our grand final years.

Will miss you Gilbo, but not your kicks though.

Deserves a lot of credit, both as a great club man and a genuinely good footballer. AA squad in 09 and on the podium of the B&F in 10. That suggests he had a significant contribution to two of our best years as a club. Cheers Sammy.

Thanks Gilbo, although I labelled you 'the butcher' a lot, no one can deny your heart was always for the club and the amount of times ya put your body on the line.
Looking forward to seeing you teach the young kids of the Suns a bit of heart next year while you and your family enjoy the sunshine

Fairly copped flak through the year for some average performances but so so much of it was unwarranted.

If Gilbert saw what was said about him over the past 23 rounds he’d feel pretty flat you would think. Now every comment in this thread will have nothing but glowing praise for someone who off the field in 13 seasons never put a foot wrong yet absolute garbage was put on him for far too long.

I learnt my lesson grilling Jason Blake week in week out when he gave nothing but his heart and soul to the Saints.

Thanks for all the memories Sam, a shame you weren’t in the heart of majority of Sainters over the past few seasons.

Good luck Sam all the best mate o/

Will never forget your 3rd quarter against the pies in 2010 GF1, screwed up their match-ups, kicked a critical goal, started the fight back.

Sam Gilbert was the last St Kilda player on the list to have played under Grant Thomas.

Only three current St Kilda players played under Ross Lyon (Armitage, Steven & Geary). Seven more 2018 listed players played under Watters (Newnes, Ross, Webster, Minchington, Roberton, Wright & Hickey) and Lewis Pierce was at St Kilda when Watters was coach.

At least he'll be able to look back through his photos on his laptop whenever he needs to take a stroll down memory lane.

C'mon Percy... you could now afford to be a bit more magnanimous.
Yeah mate, fair call. I did mean it a bit tongue-in-cheek. But I can see how it came across rather harsh.
