He wanted out at the end of 2004 and Sheeds said no sammy well play u more in 2005 and give u a fair go and then gives him the arse

There was no room for him in the team with Henno and Bolton in stunning form. Not to mention the insanely talented Ty Zantuck.

And don't give me the "VFL form" excuse. Just because Sam's VFL form was better than any other defender bar maybe Ted Richards it doesnt he deserves senior selection.....

He just was not good enough for AFL footy. When he was in the seniors he was always stuffing up.

I know that Sam Hunt doesn't belong on an AFL list.

Nail.Hammer.Head.

Said a lot about the state of our list that blokes like Hunt and Bullen lasted so long.
Just not good enough.

Mind you, the club probably should have done the right thing and let him go to the Roos when the opportunity was there. Then again, it's a cut throat business.

I was going to ask what the Bombers fans thought about him, but I think I got my answer :D

Being on the rookie list, I think he'll just have to show some VFL form and prove to the coaches he might be worth a crack.

He is every chance of showing some VFL form.
Infact, I'm certain he will show very good VFL form.

Fact of the matter is, he just isn't good enough at the highest level.

But did he ever really get an opportunity to see if he could make it. Name the times he played in defence for more than one week in a row in the seniors. It never happened, so how did we really find out if he could make it or not.

Look what happened once Richards got a solid crack at it late last year.

Bluntly, no he didn't get an opportunity.
Did he do anything with the limited opportunities he had to make anyone take notice. No. And he got away with things at VFL level that he never would have got away with at AFL level, and hence the lack of opportunities. He was prone to turning the ball over under pressure and he had a terrible habit of turning back into traffic as soon as he had the footy. He would have been crucified at AFL level with those traits.

Richards never looked lost on a footy field like Hunt did.

It's a big jump, not that I have to tell anyone that, and Sam never looked like he was ever going to make the transition. Not at FB.

And if he was to make it at HB or on a wing, it was and it is a long queue and there are plenty ahead of him, already in it.

How can anyone say he would have been crucified The fact is we will never know and the other fact is sam deserved opportunities that went to bolton, Henneman, zantuck and then deservedly Richards. Hunt was at one time, deemed a player of the future as he got a finals game against West Coast I believe but then seemed to go out of favour. he was competing against maybe the best fullback Essendon has ever had. i would have liked him to be given the chance to fit into an Andrew Embley type of player, as he is strong at the contest, tall, mobile and a long kick however it was never tried. I am a little dubious of people who PREDICT how a player will perform at the next level by only judging VFL form. Look at Mahony, Milne, Kingsley, Odonnell, MICHAEL TUCK, Filandia, Jimmy Wynd etc etc etc. The simple fact is players need an opportunity and a suitable role. If they find it they can forge decent careers. I would finish by saying a knock on Sam Hunt seems to be his attitude and Essendon clearly got rid of borderline players with questionable attitudes.

Do you remember the brain explosion and simple mistake that Hunt made in that final? Do you remember the errors he made against West Coast in 2005?
A bloke who make a mistake 26% of the time, isn't good enough.
I'm not judging him purely on VFL form. He had fundemental errors in his game that were exposed at AFL level. That's not a prediction, that's fact. He didn't remove them from his game when he went back and wasn't given another opportunity.

If there are errors in your game, you go back and fix them. If you can't or you won't then the opportunity doesn't come around again.

How many of Mahoney, Milne, Kingsley, O'Donnell, Tuck, Filandia, Wynd were key position players? And Milne only played reserves footy for two years, that's not unheard of. How many of those blokes were midfielders stuck in a KPP's body?

On Sam's attitude, it was bad when it first came to the club. But that's what happens when you're influenced by Jordan Bannister. He trained and worked as hard as anyone in his last couple of years. He just wasn't good enough.

He got opprtunities, he stuffed up in critical stages in a match and he doesn't deserve anymore opportunities at essendon. Watch his last quarter against West Coast in 2005.

I pumped him up on a number of occasions, and he certainly could have got more opportunities, but ultimately he's a good VFL footballer I feel, but NQR for an AFL footballer. I would have preferred him to play ahead of a Bolton or more particularly Henneman at times... in fact Henneman's place in the team is the pretty much the sole reason I posted about Hunt there for a period.

I was a fan of his but they made the right choice. I belive people are being very harsh on Sam over the WC game , yes he made a couple of bad errors including the goal square handball for a WC goal but a few others made terrible mistakes that night as well.He didnt get a lot of oppertunity at senior level and i had been critical of that but after last years VFL finals i am glad he didnt.
The final against Sandy was the nail in the coffin for him, game on the line and he comes up with some very ordinary turnovers:(
