If you say so.

I do say so. I'm having a go at the Private School mentality of exploit the loopholes for personal gain that would have encouraged him to do this course. If his hearing was an impediment, he should have got special consideration in a First language English course. The overwhelming majority of Second generation Australians who grew up speaking a different language at home, don't or never have done EAL courses in Year 12, despite technically having English as their second language. If your whole life is in an English speaking background and your whole education is in English, which I assume is the case for Sam, there's no way you should be allowed to study an EAL course in Year 12, it's totally unfair on genuine EAL students.

What I found interesting is the bit about him struggling against the better teams with the bigger forwards - like Scache!
To be fair though, he was a first year TAC player and Schache was one of the most dominant forwards in the history of the national champs. Kicked 24 goals in that carnival which was a record iirc.

Considering that English courses are predominately about literacy, him studying EAL is a rort of the system.
It's about more than literacy. I guess with VCE if the opportunity arises to use the system to maximise your result, then you do it. I am not quite sure how eligibility for the 'additional English' works, though his bionic ear was implanted very early in his development. Maybe someone aware of the specific details could explain the criteria applied in his situation.

In Victoria it used to be after 6 years in an English medium school you no longer qualified, but a combination of National Curriculum and research suggesting that it takes 7 years before you stop being disadvantaged by language resulted in a relaxing of the system to being able to testify that it's your second language. Big private schools are now taking the piss and bumping up marks by enrolling anyone who loosely qualifies. If Peter Daicos was to enrol in a big private school tomorrow to do Year 12, despite the fact that he earns a living from talking in English, he'd probably get placed in an EAL course, because they could get away with it and he'd get a higher mark. Personally, I find it ethically disturbing and emblematic of much that I dislike about society.

You certainly seem to have done your homework on this subject and your arguments seem well-founded. However, it's Sam McLarty you're talking about here, a Collingwood player earmarked (no pun intended) by some as our next FB. You are treading on eggshells here with a dissenting view on the guy's scholastic achievement. Personally I am going to spend more time checking out some of our lesser known players - such as Schade. TG is mounting a campaign for him in another thread, quite a lay-back place to chill and savour the mellow vibes of a temporarily reformed poster.

Sam McLarty seems like a lovely kid and I hope he becomes a star defender and onfield I hope he learns to exploit the system and learns to get away with scragging to the level of Steve Silvagni. I'm not having a go at him. I'm having a go at his school and its exploitation of a more important system than the AFL rules.

Anyone at junior level would have struggled against a player like Scache who many thought could have gone number one in the national draft. Also, McLarty is at least 197cm, so he wouldn't have struggled against the height of Scache.

We should probably be thankful he struggled because if he had him beat that's a massive scalp and could have impacted his draft position in 2016.

here's some serious circular thinking in that Sco. Ran the confibulations of it through the enigma-paradox decypheratron and the result was lots and lots of smoke.

I must admit, because we had no first round pick and I had other stuff happening, I didn't take much notice of the draft this year, either before or after. I listened to it, but apart from our selections, the names didn't stick. Schade and Schache seem so similar in print after a few whiskies ... Of course, the mathematics didn't add up given I knew Schade had come to us via Gold Coast, but that didn't immediately register with me replying in the thread. :$

I seriously doubt the hypothetical above that Daicos who was born in Australia, would qualify for EAL today as an 18 yo. with 12 years in the school system.
Or am I missing something?

Hahah very unlikely that he leaves. He wanted to go there after all. If he does go then it's an indication of some very serious issues at the Bears, but I have a feeling that Fagan and co are going to be much more successful that their predecessors in Voss and Leppo.

Perhaps I am not a klutz but instead had a premonition.

No One Stopped him. McLarty was a Underage Kid too
