Opinion Sam Shaw - Defender?

Sorry Mods ...if you feel this is better merged somewhere else?

Now in my potshot for those targets (recipients) ....if i have accuse falsely my apologies in advance

Seem to remember cmndstab saying Shaw is only a 3rd tall option in the side if he were to play ;)
And despite Vader & others utterances that he was recruited as a defender only .....his U18 highlights clearly show him playing midfield/forward

Seems the coach agrees with me :D

Shaw was absolutely not recruited as a midfielder. He was a third tall, and identified early as a backman rather than up forward. I've got no doubt Rendell dropped a "he's even done good work in the juniors as a midfielder!!" line, which really only means "his good juniors form didn't only come about because he's big". Hell, Otten was the one that was actually recruited as a midfielder, though I can't see any good reason to actually play him there since he's clearly a much better defender.

Somehow I don't think Shaw is going to squeeze in up forward at the moment with us apparently keen to run three ruckmen in the side and Tom Lynch having kicked his bag. Long term, it will only get harder for him with Walker back from next year.

Shaw's AFC career relies on him getting into the side as a third tall backman. No reason why he and Otten can't both play that role, with one taking a loose man position (particularly once Reilly retires), but at the moment if it comes down to a battle between Otten and Shaw for one spot then Otten is well in front at the moment

Shaw's forward thinking

Defender Sam Shaw could add to Adelaide’s unpredictable attack in the second half of the season.

Coach Brenton Sanderson said both Shaw and Otten had the capacity to play in attack.
“Sam’s been spending a bit of time with ‘Bicks’ (forward line coach Mark Bickley). He played his best footy for us last year as a defender, but with Andy Otten, Daniel Talia and Ben Rutten all in good form, Shawy might be an option for us up forward,” Sanderson said.

i dont mind what happens, sando's the boss.
i would prefer him down back though.
hope he comes back and gets lots of games. always get worried a player is going to jump ship if we dont play them.

I have been wondering where Sam might fit into our 22 if he can get his body right. Given the form and development of Otten and Smith it's hard to see him squeezing anyone out of the defence (I can but dream of Shaw replacing Reilly!). You'd have to say that Mackay would want to extract the digit - Shaw could have eyes on his wing.

I do like the idea of Shaw a bit further up the ground at this stage of his development where his raking kick can be put to use in a position where it's not going to kill us if he turns it over occasionally (which he does). Also, I can't imagine too many midfielders outmarking Sam.

In agreement with all this.

Who does he come in for?

In agreement with all this.

Who does he come in for?
 Side is far from settled ......Lyons and Kerridge have made it hard for the selectors

But i still like quick talls over smaller slower types .....particularly how it adds to our marking & team flexibility

IMO Shaw & Henderson are must haves in our best 22

Who is vulnerable? ......Wright, & Porps ......and without any detriment to what i think will be a great career .....ATS Laird

With the performance of Kerridge and Crouch, it only reinforces in my mind that we should trade Vince at years end ....and maybe Porplyzia?

Vince for Gumbleton .......28 YO for a 24YO KPF

Shaw looked pretty good up forward for a bit against GWS last year, if he gets fit he could be a real weapon as he reads the play so well.

If he does get fit and firing for us as a mid forward who can swing to defense when needed I see us playing him ahead of Henderson like last season ( as I think they are basically playing for the same spot and not because of my opinion of Hendo).

If he doesn't play forward I think the idea of him taking over from Rielly may happen though not as soon as some on this board would hope.

Smith moves into midfield, shaw takes his spot in defence.
Maybe lose a bit of drive out of the defence, but shaw a far more natural defender.
Anyways, with Otten holding down third tall duties, shaw could really showcase his run and attack out of defence which he has already shown glimpses of.
With his decent speed and size could play on a variety of opponents (Mid sized forwards/rotating mids etc.)
And if u dont mind... smith in the midfield where he belongs!
Our defense has held up well this year, our midfield numbers are down.
Get smith in there!!!

lol at sam shaw being a forward. Disposal is suspect. And who would he replace? Only way he will get a game is at the expense of otten, or if smith moves into the midfield

Shaw and Hendo on the wings both quick tall types with long kicking abilities plus good overhead "Embley" types

Who would you take out of our midfield in order for shaw and hendo to play opposite wings?

Seriously? His kicking makes Jenkins & Tippett look god-like, yet we're apparently so desperate for his talents that we want him spraying them all over the place in our forward line? Any port in a storm, I guess...

As far as I can tell, that article goes a long way towards proving that Sando has a great sense of humour.

They are running with it in this article too and Sando wants to recruit a KPD.

I said months ago Shaw should be considered for a forward role. He has height, speed, can mark, can play small or tall. He'd be a nightmare match up.

Who would he displace? At the moment, likey no one but teams change and opportunities arise. All it will take is an injury or someone to drop their form.
As for "spraying it everywhere", let's just delist him then. Because if we can't trust him up forward it makes less sense to trust him down back. But I'd suggest his reputation for that isn't as bad as some suggest. Plus he gives us huge flexibility. Let's just hope he can get and stay fit.

You do know he was a first year player ......no allowance for any player development or becoming more composed & comfortable at AFL level?

Not often we agree ;) .....but with Shaw spot on, and he's going to have some posters eating humble pie

I like the concept of having multiple "swingmen" in the side. Lynch, Otten, Hendo and now Shaw seem to be the guys Sando can play at either end, dependent on the game.

Not only can they fix a weakness we may have on a given day, ie Otten up forward when Tex went down, they can also be used to disrupt another teams set up.
