It was only after he nominated that he was informed of the Lion's interest.

Article

"Paul Brodie, one of our recruiting officers, has been keeping tabs on Sam," Lions football manager Graeme Allan said. "We gave Sam's manager Ricky Nixon and his father a guarantee we would pick him if he put in for the draft."

I am just saying that he took a big gamble. Luckily for him, it has so far paid off, and I hope for his sake that it continues this way.
Less of a gamble than waiting a year for a possible Father-Son selection. I think he was under-estimating his chances, but he's got a spot now, so he won't have any regrets about jumping now.

Good luck Sam, and if you ever get homesick, give Uncle Wayne a call.

Well there you go-I stand corrected.

So the Lions notified him of their intent to select him.

Still, the fact that he chose Lions over us, considering he wouldn't play AFL anyway in 2007, is intriguing. And what if someone had seriously slipped through to the Lions pick-would they have overlooked Sheldon? In any case, he took a risk, considering he was going to be a Blue in 08. Luckily for him it paid off. Good luck to him.

He took his chance while it was there and so be it, let's say that he didn't nominate and ended up doing his knee or some other injury early next year and missed the majority of the TAC cup season and the U18 carnival, if that happened he would be a good chance of not being drafted next year and that would be it for his football career. As i said he took his chance while it was there rather than risking his career on hoping to be taken next year by Carlton, while it is dissapointing that he won't be at Carlton such is life, if he doesn't get a descent run at Brisbane he might decide to come home and we will get him that way.
Hopefully we rookie Williams and Johnson as i think they might develop into good players after a couple of years of putting on some size on the rookie list, would also love to rookie Leigh Adams a Gleeson clone with talent to burn, a bargain with a rookie selection and seeing we didn't take any smaller players in the ND would be a perfect fit.:thumbsu:

I know if I was in his shoes I would've done exactly the same thing.

Full time Footballer getting paid vs Part time footballer, no pay with no guarentees of being drafted the following year.

Easy decision.

And from what i've seen of him, I think he'll be a very good midfielder in a few years.

Not at all. It just shows he has confidence. We have no idea whether he adapts well, or if he becomes homesick. Only time will tell.

I still reckon that if he hasnt had at least a couple of matches for Brisbanes first team in the 2 years, then he will get sick of it all

There is also the fact that he might not get on to well with Mathews (acker and michaels spring to mind here) during that time and want to leave.

What makes you think Mal and Leigh didn't get on?

Ah, good luck to the kid. He tried his luck and ended up in Brisbane with their final pick (#70 Overall)

We could have picked him up with our final selection, but went with Joe Anderson instead.

One thing is for sure though, he certainly WAS not worth selection #35 in this years draft, so I believe Carlton have done the right thing.

What makes you think Mal and Leigh didn't get on?

Why was he saying that he had lost interest in the sport and was feeling jaded?

Why is he now at Essendon then instead of going back to the lions?

Anyways... good luck to him and all the best for the future.

He was guarranteed a spot on our list for 2008 and beyond. It really was a silly choice, as he wouldn't have missed any chance of playing AFL if he opted to be taken by us next year.

If you are so sure he was guaranteed a spot on your list in 2008, then you should have ensured that by tying him up this year. Using your theory a kid like Xavier Ellis would never get drafted.

He wanted to join the AFL this year, you didnt want him, so he went into the draft.

Have you read anything in this thread?

We were interested in him, and guarranteed him a spot on our list in 2008. We didn't take him using a F/S selection this year as he was not worth a pick that high. I have no theory, and you have obviously misread. What does Ellis have to do with this? Nothing.

I presume because Essendon gave Mal a more flexible training schedule like he had asked for at the Lions.

Is that all you're basing it on?

It all just seems very silly by Sam. There is NO way he will play seniors for Brisbane this year, so he will effectively start playing AFL from 2008 onwards, and even that isn't a guarrantee.

Anyway, good luck to him. For all we know, he could turn out to be just like the last kid we chose to overlook that was taken by another club.

Do you think making $40K next year for training with an AFL club had anything to do with it?
Of course he's not going to pass up the money, and sit around in the TAC for a year when he can go and learn from Lethal Leigh........would you?

Certainly a fair point BB.
Can't blame him for nominating once he knew a club was interested in him.

Clearly you werent interested enough. Obviously your club is in such good shape that you can pass by father-son opportiunities.

Please, stop embarrassing yourself.

We were interested in him, just not as much as Brisbane.

You are saying that because one club picked him up, no others were interested. What rubbish...

Thats just what I said. You had the opportunity to lock him in and declined. If you wanted him badly enough that he was guaranteed for next year, then you should have taken him this year. To say he's not worth a father son this year but is definitely worth it next year is ludicrous and insulting, and I'm not surprised he nominated for the draft after Carlton's treatment of him. What difference is a year when you're rebuilding?

You are just being silly now.

We didn't take him this year under the F/S rule because we decided that he was not worth our 3rd round selection, pick 35 overall, in this years draft. But that is not to say that we were not interested in him. On the contrary, we were, and we were considering taking him with a late pick, or even in the rookie draft if he lasted that far.

If he was guarranteed for next year, why would we take him this year-that doesn't make sense, and I don't think you fully understand what is going on. We told him that it was our intention to take him using the F/S rule in the 2007 draft, at the end of next year.

It is not insulting at all to suggest he was not worth a father son selection this draft. The fact is that this year was an incredibly strong draft-one of, if not the strongest ever. Pick 35 was deemed to be too high for a player of his calibre. Not insulting at all that there were better players available at that pick. The fact that he went to Brisbane in the 70's suggests he wasn't good enough to go 40 odd picks prior. Therefore, we made the right decision in the end. We also got a player that at the beginning of the year prior to injury was rated a top 20 selection, far better than Sheldon.

Next year its apparently not as strong a draft as this years was, and therefore Carlton believed that in next years draft, Sheldon was worthy of a 3rd round selection, and would have picked him.

Fair enough, your board, I've said my piece and got a fair hearing. I just dont see the logic in overlooking a player who will be worth it next year but not this year. Father-son gives you the chance to pick up good players for free. Carlton decided to roll the dice and hope Sheldon would be patient enough to sit out a year. It backfired.

And that's exactly why I don't think you are very smart.

The logic is that he wasn't good enough to pick at 35 in this years draft because there were plenty of better prospects available at that pick and that he isn't big enough or good enough yet.

He would have been worth a 3rd rounder next year, and that's why we told him we would take him then.

That's really not that hard to understand...

He did the right thing. Carlton may have intended to get him next year but I am quite sure there were no guarantees made. Unless we gave it to him in writing he could not be sure we would get him next year. Brisbane gave him a guarantee they would get him on their list this year and he did the smart thing and chose Brisbane.

While he may not have been worth a F/S 3rd round selection, Carlton still had their chance with pick #67 and chose to pass. Shows we didn't rate him too highly.

Good luck to him at Brisbane.

I'd say we would have been tossing up between selecting Sam or one of the Queensland kids who didn't get picked, e.g. Kiel.

It seemed we rated him highly and said we were going to pick him up regardless - so when all clubs had passed on him, we took him with our final pick. We get first dibs on the remaining Queenslanders in the RD if none are taken in the PSD anyhow, so this way it was win-win.

Well done to those wishing him luck.

I wouldn't go mentioning father son selections ( Clokes ), Collingwood couldn't get it right.

Totally happy with how Carlton managed Sheldon situation, the fact he was bottom age meant he wasn't as good this year as many 18 year olds, as vindicated by no other club taking him before pick 70 or whatever it was.
