Ok, I know a lot of ppl are prob getting bored of these threads involving comparisons with the new iPhone4, but my decision has come down to these 2, I'm slightly leaning toward the Galaxy, as I think it has more flexibility and customization than the iPhone4, even though the Galaxy is slightly bigger, it is much thinner, weighs less and has a bigger screen, an Android platform really appeals to me as well and has more scope for change/improvement

I have an iPhone 3g atm and haven't had any real problems with it, but I like to change things up occasionally, but am not sure if I should def go for the Galaxy

What are people's thoughts on the comparison between the 2?

The Galaxy S rooted with lag fix is an impressive phone.

I think you will be happy with either, but it is really up to your personal thoughts. Both good phones.

Edit: Also, if you want better comparisons, google it (I remember there being a great comparison on a site) or go to Whirlpool forums and search. Huge amount of threads on this).

Galaxy S gets the nod from me.

I've yet to come across anything that I'd want to do on my phone that I could only do on an iPhone, and you can do some things on it that you can't do on an iPhone, including things like sync wirelessly with iTunes (through the impressive iSyncr & iSyncr WiFi).

With Android you get home-screen widgets, true multi-tasking, an open app-market (as opposed to one that apple has to approve everything on), general app notifications (any app can give you notifications about updates, messages, etc.), superior hardware, and if you really want to get into it, custom ROMs that let you do just about anything with your phone.

The Google integration is pretty handy too - Google search widgets on the homescreen, Google maps integration for addresses etc.

And also, as alfy says, when rooted with the One Click Lag Fix, the Galaxy S performs the Quadrant Benchmarking to more than double what the standard specs on the phone are supposed to do, and about 75% better than the standard Nexus One.

And that's without the Android 2.2 "FroYo" update, due out officially later in the month.

Worst thing is that the GPS is pretty buggy at times, but apparently FroYo fixes that somewhat.

Also, the screen is so pretty that you will be sure to get "oohs" and "aahs" whenever someone uses it.

I too was stuck deciding between an Android phone and the Iphone.

Even though these videos are meant to be funny, I actually did find them helpful. Never mind that it's about the HTC Evo instead of the Galaxy.

Thanks for your thoughts, seems like I'm becoming stronger towards the Galaxy, the new Froyo update sounds really good and it looks like to have a lot more useful features and customization, I guess the issue now is who to go with

I have been with Optus for 2 years and they have been ok, far from good, but I have never used anywhere near the cap amount that's included on the $59 cap with them, I noticed Virgin have the Galxy $0 upfront on a $39 cap which entitles you to $300 worth of calls/text and inc 300mb of data, seems like a decent deal to me

If you could wait maybe a month or 2 you might want to check out the HTC Desire HD, only problem is it will be launched exclusively through Vodafone, not sure what their service is like but if you feel comfortable buying it outright and then going on a BYO cap plan you might strike a winner there

You can get the Galaxy S free for the first three months with Virgin at the moment, if you sign up online.

I was in a similar situation a month or so, and ended up going the iPhone. I really liked the customisation of the galaxy S, but I figured I'd get similar customisation with jailbreaking. After playing around with both these phones in the Virgin Mobile store, I didn't like the plasticky feel of the Galaxy S (it's why it's lighter). Other than that it pretty much comes down to whether you like Android or iOS imo.

I reccomend (if you haven't already) yoh try and play around with the two phones at a store to get a feel for them.

Good luck!

If TS is just a casual user, 300mb will suit him fine, he won't need 2gb. I have 500mb a month, and do whatever I want really, and never go above 150mb really.

yeah 300mb is ample data for me, would never go close

Now I'm also weighing up the HTC Desire HD when it comes out, read a bit about it last night, seems like the ultimate phone

I am going thru the descision making process at the moment and I would probably go the Iphone. I have spent hours trying the main offerings and I have to say email activesync on the Androids is pathetic. Attachments don't work particularily well and if you do something like IMAP you then find that you can't open TIFF files across the board and PDF's on the Galaxy. My crappy nokia candy phone does that with no problem.

The Samsung looks dead sexy but I found the HTC's and the Iphone much easier to use.

Hmmm interesting, I had a play around with the Galaxy at the Telstra shop and i must admit I was really impressed with what it had to offer and the display is better than i thought too, I guess until you encounter some problems with the phone you will have a better grasp on how good it actually is

I also had a feel of the HTC HD2 to get a rough idea of how big the HTC Desire HD will be when it's released, as their dimensions are almost identical, and despite how great the features on the Desire HD sound, I don't think I can tolerate carrying a phone that big and heavy around

I agree with you. Iphone is better for those who do not have much experience.

Solid bump: the Galaxy S series would go on to be arguably the best line of smartphones made. Sadly for Apple, they fell away quality-wise, but were still able to successfully sell their product.

Solid bump, except for the fact they're spamming advertising for some scanning place
