I thought Sandilands was a very disappointing player tonight. He gets his hands on the ball a lot but with little positive effect for the team. Why he doesnt belt it forward on occassions is also surprising.

We need Sandilands to be at his best as I feel he has the potential to dominate. How long we have to wait till he does it on a consistent basis is concerning.I actually thought we were more effective when Bradley was rucking in tonights game

Sandi was very poor tonight. He kept tapping it down to his feet where out middies were getting mauled. Didn't see him smash it forward at all tonight.

Seems way too wary of Hudson's body and wasnt focused on the ball, Hipless did much better I thought, atleast created a contest we had a chance at winning.

On a bright note he did take a few marks :p

Ruck contests he was terrible. Back to the old structure of just tapping it to no advantage whatsoever, and I can't remember one occasion where he belted it forward 40 metres.

Around the ground he was OK though. He is starting to learn to use his bulk to advantage, and he did seem like he's gained a yard or 2 in speed.

Sandilands:

Handballs far too much.
Rarely kicks the ball.
Does not punch the ball forward or to his team's advantage in the ruck.
He's the tallest player in the league, and cannot mark the ball in a contest.

He's so frustrating. He could be so much better than he is. I don't see him ever improving, though.

Im going to send Harves a DVD of the Lions Three-peat where Matthews employed what he called "The Running Maul"

The Ruckman would smash it forward two or three mids burst forward two behind for insurance.

Simple, effective.

He wasn't bad today. 18 possessions and 25 hitouts is a pretty good effort for a ruckman. I'm fairly sure he had a few clearances as well. One of the cleaner pair of hands in our team.

6 clearances (leader for Fremantle)
5x 1% (2nd best for Fremantle)
Disposal efficiency of 78% (above his average of 67% last year)
2 contested marks
13 contested possessions

I agree his hitouts were average. But i think hitouts are made to look average by average onballers. I'm sure if he was tapping to Bartel/Ablett/Selwood and co......his hitouts would look a lot more effective.

I thought that he had a hard first quarter being taken out a lot. Around the field he looked good.

He covered the ball at one stage, and turned his back towards the opposite player, and the opposing player you could almost read his mind. Oh fudge.

what i thought was unusual was that at the centre bounces he had his eyes on the opposing ruckman and not the ball. Hence his timing was terrible.

I don't know whether it was Sandi being off his game or Hudson doing really well or a combination of the two, but that was the least effective I've seen Sandi at centre bounces in years. Even the hitouts he did win seemed to go literally straight down at his feet instead of out to the waiting midfielders.

He was still pretty good around the ground though.

Part of the problem was the absymal bouncing the umps were doing for the whole night, which meant our ruck advantage was somewhat negated.

crunched that guy on the wing :thumbsu:

Brilliant timing too - just after Johnson had finished being all mouthy and in your face towards Taz after the Dogs kicked a goal. The roar from the crowd after Sandi put him down was one of the (few) highlights of the match.

I noticed this also. He didn't seem to go for the ball and a bunch of times the ball hit the deck without either ruckmen touching it.

Sandi was good. I am not getting into a slanging match but I dismissing the purpose of this thread FFS

Hudson & Minson continually crossed the line at the centre bounces with the intent of sheperding Him away from the contest , Hudson was pinged for it only twice, the second time late in the game when it was all over.

Hudson and Minson are no mugs, they are both very strong men, Sandi copped a bit last night but his effort around the ground couldn't be faulted, took some strong marks, smothers and shepards. Just needs to kick the ball every now and then, he's not a bad kick at all!
Im more worried about "midfielders" like Mundy being flat footed at the centre bounces, clearances were won when Crowley attacked the ball off the wing and Schammer was moving defensive side of the bounce.
Midfield of Mundy, Hasleby and Pav is too slow a combination.
Why was Hill taken out of the Midfield after the first quarter, he was pretty good in the first quarter?

When I saw those kicks given, I remember thinking 'how was that contest any different to the previous 20'?

Good on them for negating him in the contests, but whats exactly is the rule? If you're not allowed to cross the ball and shepherd your opponent away, then Sandi should have got about 20 free kicks.

The Bulldogs had obviously done their homework and had a plan against Sandi, because he was clearly beaten. But remember he wasn't alone here, I reckon Taz was our only player to win his position on the night!

Would have liked to have started a new thread on Sandilands, but having taken one for the team, so to speak, can't. :( :D:thumbsu:

Anyhow, with such a makeshift midfield, I was wondering how the hell we have done so well in there of late.

Of course, Hase makes a massive difference, but IMO Sandi has been the biggest one.

As you know, he's made me eat my words before, as I have been a critic of his. But this year, I believe he has made the step up to being a truly elite ruckman.

He has gone from being an average tap ruckman who wins a lot of taps, to being a very good tap ruckman who also wins a lot of taps.

It has made an enormous difference.

I saw a stat at the end, his hit outs to advantage were only 19%. I call bullshit on that.

If you look at highlights of the stoppages, just about every tap was into Hase's or Pav's laps. The only way they could combat it was going the tackle before they took the ball.

The stoppage set plays were grand. None moreso than the one leading to Hill's goal.

For mine, Sandi being incredibly accurate with his taps over the last few weeks has made a monumental difference, with a midfield that by rights should be getting wiped off the park based on depth of talent.

Keep it up son! :thumbsu:

He's a champ alright. Has improved a heap in the offseason and he really looks super fit to me. He was in a 'marking' mood as Harvey said last night. Yeah he missed a few but it's great to see from the kickouts if all else fails, they are going for Sandi. And I noticed last night (more than normal) there seemed to always be a small fella at his feet (schammer or hase) to take to spilled ball if he missed the mark. Well coached and well played.
