Fergus Watts (Eagles)
Another good performance from Fergus playing in defence. He looked very comfortable in his role and his overall game was very encouraging. He ran out of defence very well and was used on many occasions in setting up many Eagles forward movements. His marking was certainly a highlight of his game and if he wasn’t in a position to mark he always did the team thing and used a strong spoil to bring the ball to ground.

Kicks – 12

Marks – 10

Handballs – 8

Mark Stevens (Eagles)
Mark would be one player who will come under close consideration for a recall to the Crows team this week after another top performance with the Eagles. His high work rate saw him gather many possessions in the Eagles forward line and his contested marking was very good. His effort to win the contested ball on the ground was first class as was his skill level.

Kicks - 12

Marks - 7

Handballs – 8

Goals – 4

Behinds – 2

Nathan Bock (Eagles)
Although not a high possession game from Nathan, he was still a contributor to the win with his strong defensive efforts. On most occasions he led his player to the ball, minimising his opponent’s influence of the contest. His clean hands in the contests were very impressive and along with Fergus provided plenty of drive from the backline.

Kicks – 7

Marks -

Handballs – 4

Matthew Smith (Sturt)
Another solid performance from Matthew playing at centre half back. Didn’t win a stack of the footy, but he played a tight defensive game on his opponent and his consistent form with Sturt is a pleasing sign for Neil and the match committee.

Kicks – 8

Marks – 2

Handballs – 2

Luke Jericho (West Adelaide)
In a team that was well beaten, Luke was one of the few West Adelaide players who could walk of the ground holding his head high. Playing in both defence and attack he battled hard all day and broke even with opponent when down back and certainly looked dangerous when shifted to the forward line. His overall skill level was very good and his strong attack on the ball saw him win some important contested possessions.

Kicks – 10

Marks – 5

Handballs – 2

Goals – 2

Behinds – 1

Kris Massie (Norwood)
Without a doubt this was Kris’ best game for the year. He was easily Norwood’s best player in a team that was flogged on the day. His outstanding work rate saw Kris gather plenty of possessions on the wing, in the middle and across half forward. He certainly looks to have regained his best form and his performance will surely see his named thrown around the selection table this week.

Kicks – 16

Marks – 13

Handballs – 11

John Meesen (Norwood)
A fairly quiet day from the big man. Didn’t get too many opportunities to stamp his influence on the game when up forward because the ball wasn’t up there too often. When shifted into the ruck he was very competitive and got first hands on the footy at many stoppages.

Kicks – 4

Marks – 2

Handballs – 3

Chad Gibson (Norwood Reserves)
Chad played well in the ruck, but as the game wore he started to run out of puff a little. He battled hard all day.

Scott Stevens (Port Adelaide)
Although beaten on the day, Scott refused to give in. Scott was Port’s main ‘go to’ man in attack and he took some strong contested marks, but seemed to lack the support of his fellow forwards. His attack on the footy was always strong and his skills very sound.

Kicks – 9

Marks – 6

Handballs – 4

Goals – 2

Behinds – 2

Chris Knights (Port Adelaide Reserves)
Playing as a midfielder, resting in on the half forward line, Chris had another solid game. His work rate was high and he ran the lines well to receive the footy and as a result was able to gather many possessions. His crumbing in the forward line was very good and he always looked capable of kicking goals while resting there.

Ivan Maric (Port Adelaide Reserves)
Playing in the important centre half forward position, Ivan’s competitiveness gave his teammates a real target to aim for. He was not afraid to throw his big body into the marking contests, which resulted in some strong grabs being taken. He was able to bring his teammates in the game with his clean hands and neat disposal.

Jonathon Griffin – Rookie (Centrals Reserves)
Another excellent performance from Jonathon. His is an excellent palmer of the football at the ruck contests and his ground skills, for a big man, are very good. His work ethic was tremendous and he gathered about 15 possessions for the game. His hand and foot skills were very good.

Ryan Nye – Rookie (North Adelaide)
Ryan produced his best since arriving at the Crows. Playing across half back he picked up more than 20 possessions and his skill level saw all his touches hit a teammate or used to the team’s advantage. After a bit of a slow start to the year, Ryan is showing some very promising signs with his footy.

I don't read this every week, but do they usually praise every aspect of each players game every week? Good for player confidence i guess, but a realistic opinion would be much better, of course i didn't see most of those lads play so maybe they were all good...

I must say i like the look of Ryan Nye, always among the best for our Ressies which is fantastic to see from a young bloke who has just moved to a different state. He seems to get along well with his team mates who voted him their best player in Round 1, more than i can say for that port bloke

That's what the 90's gave us, the inability to critisice the ones we employ. I commend them for the fact that they still bother reporting on Matt Smith despite the other 99.9% of people associated with the Crows giving up on him!

we MUST criticise players if they dont perform up to the standard required!!!
only so the player in question will know what hes doing wrong and work extra hard to improve this area.. this is footy not a friendly love-fest

going back to 97, Blight bagged Pittman as most people remember.. after the Richmond loss i think it was... Blight was heavily criticised for this, everybody made fun of Pittman, yet at the end of the day he was an important player in our premiership side!

That really was pathetic wasn't it.

During the Grand Final celebrations Bruce came up with one of his Golden lines-

There's David Pittman, well it's a long way from pathetic to a premiership.

Also did anyone else ever buy The Footy Show Magazine, it was a good read but one day they had what's on Shaun Rehn's computer?

Things bothering me at the moment -

Crotch Jokes
David Pittman - He really is a pathetic ruckman!

Doesn't Knights play for the Eagles ressies, not the PAMFC ressies ? Nye with 20 possessions is a good effort, that sort of form should get him a senior spot at the end of the year, if not before.

Kris Massie seems to have had a day out, they are some impressive numbers, and Mark Stevens could be in line for a recall this week.

While the reports are still biased they are a bit better than last year. Last year they wouldn't have siad that Gibson ran out of puff. They would have praised him for his workrate and made him out to have covered well over 20 km.

Griffen is the one I am most interested to hear about. I have seen at a couple of training session and that game against Norwood and I have been mightly impressed with his skill level. I think I heard that he has only started playing in the ruck in the last year or 2 and I just like his raw ability. He needs to beef up a lot but his skills for someone so tall are amazing. His skills are more like that of a midfielder than a ruckman.

I will follow his progress with a fair bit of interest.

 After the Norwood/North game i went home thinking wow, we've finally done it, we've turned a 200 cm player into a HFF. But seriously his skills were amazing and I came home rating him above the other Crows ruckmen that day except maybe Hudson. After 2 years on the rookie list he should of bulked up enough to be upgraded :)

Can't argue with the above at all. He's exceptionally agile for a big man and like you I just couldn't get over this 200 cms player on a HF flank - and playing like an established HF flanker.

He's one to watch for a couple of years time!!

i know being agile is imp, but what mainly separates the big guys is their ability to take contested marks, if he can do this well then we're on a winner.

Saw him play the second half of the Port v Centrals reserves on the weekend.

He isnt that skinny. Hes a very big boy. I remember seeing the picture of him in the Advertiser where he was a stick insect but hes already put on quite a bit of muscle. Quite slow/lumbering but has a massive kick. Needs to get into better position around the ground when not rucking. AFL Prospect...i dunno. Couple of years work and I'd say probably.

Ivan Maric is huge as well. His arms ar ebigger than Riccuitos and hes what....18. Very raw but has played some reasonable games for the Port ressies so far. Looks better so far as a CHF type than a Ruck.

Pic of Griffen...not the best:

With more game time and some more muscle, who knows how he will turn out. Fingers crossed !

Will be interesting to see how he develops over the course of the year, but looks a big strong unit for 18 years of age.

Cheers for the pics Macca19.

Gibson played in the ruck? No wonder he was stuffed, he's been playing CHB for Norwood's ressies. He was named as one of the best in the ressies a couple of weeks ago playing at CHB and he's moved to the ruck? What is going on down there Norwood fans?

I think the Fergus Watts review is sugar coated a bit. I watched that game on TV and Wiggins played in front and gave him a run for his money early. Watts was also sent to the bench before he was moved up forward.

Have to remember Watts played most of his junior career at CHB - It was only in his U18 days he played CHF.

With Gibson I would say a bit of training, a bit of game education is the reason behind playing him in the ruck.
