Round 16

Saturday 10 July 2010

Sturt v Central @ House Brothers Oval ABC-TV
Aidan Riley seems to have soldified his place within the Sturt League team. He is named on the Half Forward Flank and will be featured around the stoppages throughout the day. Keep on eye on this Category 4 ranga on the TV. Welcome back to league football Brodie Martin! After spending only 2 games in the Reserves, Brodie talent/form has forced Luke Norman to consider adding him to the extended bench where there is a good chance he will come in for Michael Bratton.

Jack "Of-All-Trades" Gunston is penciled in at Centre Half Forward. Whether he stays there and presents as a target downfield for the Dogs remains to be seen. He will also feature in and around the midfield stoppages at some stage you would think. Brian Donnelly's name is no longer listed before Economou in The Advertiser. This had been a tradition for season 2010 and it's sad day for us Crows followers in the SANFL. Good luck with future endeavours Brian.

North v Port @ Prospect Oval
Matt Wright owns the Left Forward Pocket for North. Just like a dog marking his territory, expect Matty to raise the left leg 15cms or so and give the left pocket at Prospect a good spray. RoosterLad please keep an eye on this behaviour!!! Wright continues to be a strong candidate for Senior List elevation in 2011.

No Crows in action for the Magpies, although Andrew McLeod's name was thrown around earlier in the week. Some good U18's running around in their league team though. The diminutive Sam Gray and towering Scott Lycett will be up forward. Another Port underage forward will be in the Reserves team, Jamie Solly.

West v South @ City Mazda Stadium
Christopher Schmidt earns another week with the Bloods. Disappointing for him but an unchanged lineup for the Crows was warranted. Schmidty's loss is Westies gain as they will no doubt rely on his influence through the centre of the ground and around clearances.

Someone who Schmidt may be looking to feed off around the stoppages is Shaun McKernan. Let's see if all that ruck/midfielder work at training will be utilised to shark some of SMACK's taps. McKernan is named to start the ruck. I think this is due to Willits rucking for West and South believing they can get better value playing Cockshell forward and trying to stretch West's defence. Interesting to see if this pans out. Myke Cook is a travelling as an emergency to Perth.

Norwood v Eagles @ Coopers Stadium
A murder of Crows will be present at this game and it should be chock full of interested onlookers, most notably Drummond, then Neil Craig and then Peter Jonas. :D Norwood sees the return of Will Young. Drumm will no doubt be salivating at the site of Big Will running off half back linking with Paul Puopolo via handball. He is named to start at Half Forward Flank, I wonder if he will stay there? Maybe because Jonas and Georgiou have filled in admirably in his absence, Bassett has decided to play him forward.

The Eagles have some notable in's. Chris Knights will return to action at the Half Forward Flank. I think I speak for all Crows fans that we hope Chris gets through the four quarters unscathed. Brett Burton also returns from his knee operation. Surprisingly the Eagles have named him on the Wing. These two inclusions will no doubt be a pleasant injection to an Eagles line up looking to solidfy a finals spot. Drummond's other recipient of a gushing man-crush, Luke Thompson, will look to improve on an impressive showing against Sturt last week. Thompson will start at Centre Half Back and look to gather a heap of ball across the backlines, a la Nathan Bock circa 2008. Named in the forward pocket is Jared Petrenko. Look for him to pressure the Norwood defenders with his chasing and tackling. I wonder if Paul Puopolo will be lined up on him, if so, that will be a great duel. Jarrhan Jacky will add to his collection of Reserves games, he seems to have been leapfrogged by Knights and Burton for a spot in the League team.

Bye
Glenelg (Sellar)

Damn! There is always someone I forget. Thanks conVINCEd, will add him now. :thumbsu:

It's eerie isn't it!

I think i've done rounds with only 3 games, and 5 players but still managed to leave someone out!:D

Great to see Martin, Burton and Knights running around league:thumbsu:

:D :thumbsu:

Excellent pick-up re Jonas and Georgiou. Norwood are loaded for key defenders so therefore I think Young might spend a little time up forward. With his marking ability, I honestly think he could make a decent forward. I guess it'll depend on match-ups and who is playing well, chances are Young will start back but I wouldn't be against playing him in attack.

Luke Thompson. :thumbsu: Gun, hoping he doesn't gun it up too much on Sunday though. ;)

Aiden Riley is miles better than I ever thought he'd be. He looks superb.

Hey Drummond, I presume that you were at the game, glad that you like the looks of Riley, he appears promising on the crows in the SANFL clips. How did Gunston go today?

going by the matchoff thread, he was watching the Crows and only put the SANFL on during breaks

but knowing him he probably iq'ed it, so you'll get an answer later tonight anyway once he's veiwed the whole match

You're right Riggy. :o I read Drummond's review of the Crows today after I read his comment about Riley. We're in the ACT and so never see any SANFL except the video clips. I always look forward to hearing about the SANFL games.

Neil Craig said the same thing in the paper this morning. He said that Riley had come from 'nowhere' and was almost "sent off the track during the preseason." He didn't elaborate on what he was sent off for but I can only assume it was for lack of fitness. I've seen him a few times and he looks very clean.

Yeah I watched the start of the game today before the crows came on and he really impresses me whenever I see him. He doesnt have the cleanest skills but I think he could be a damaging inside tagging midfielder. He also looks to have the frame to really beef up. The one part I enjoyed was seeing him stand up to Gowans after Pig Dog got him in a good taclke.

I headed out to House Brothers today.

Jack Gunstan had an absolute shocker, and could find himself playing reserves next week. Went to ground far to easy, spent alot of time chasing and generally just struggled.

You blokes lost then! Awsome! How was Reilly?

I started losing track a bit towards the end but...

Riley had about 20 possessions (maybe edging 25) and about 5 marks. In the first term he was amazing, just everywhere and at half time he was one of the best players on the ground. He slowed down after the major break but he was still a good contributor. His work in close is pretty special; I know it sounds stupid but around the packs he looks like a mixture of Judd and Cooney, the way he moves, attacks the loose ball and then bolts away. Must tidy up his foot skills a bit, especially when he tries short passes, but his work by hand is encouraging and his acceleration allows him to be a force at breaking away from packs. He also displays some real aggression, is very courageous and a strong competitor. Really like what I see.

Martin looked as classy as he did last year, he too finished with about 20 possessions, and most came in very influential second and third quarters. Looks to have lost none of his speed and agility, and his skills were generally very sharp. Wouldn't rule him out as a chance to get a game with the Crows this year.

Gunston did have a shocker, for a while there I thought he wouldn't even register a stat. Got his first touch, a handball, late in the third quarter. In the last he moved to defence, but in saying that he spent time around the stoppages as well as drifting forward. He had 7 possessions in the last quarter and looked really good, unfortunately he just couldn't get into the game prior to that. Wouldn't surprise me if he did play reserves next week, simply because one poor game by a very talented youngster is clearly unacceptable...
