I'm sure it's all part of a list management strategy. They would prefer a certain number of players coming out of contract each year. That limits the workload and makes it less likely to lose players.

Am I the only one who has not been that impressed by Savage thus far? And he's not that young anymore. Can't see another team poaching him either. A post 2017 extension would have been silly imo, as it is I'd say this one is unnecessary but I can live with it.

Funny cause i'm the exact opposite. Reads the play really well, great kick. Excellent half back flanker, our best along with Roberton and Jimmy (though apparently a move to the wing is on the cards).

Yep agree with MightySaint, has been consistent and is only 24. If he can replicate his form on the wing will be even more damaging. Do not like disagreeing with a fellow Taswegian but reckon he has been among our best and can improve further.

I still remember his long kicks keeping us in the game. Sort of a troy schwarze and gram hybrid.

I guess, he still needs to develop his game further.

why only a 1 year extension?
Harsh but it works for both parties if he doesn't become consistent then he will be surpassed by other players by 2018 if he becomes a consistent 20+ possession player he would be in line for big money in 2018 with the saints or another team

Great news. Sav is going to be an important player for us going forward. Beautiful kick, great leg speed and the ability to kick a few long bomb goals too. And he's still only 24. Bloody handy set of "steak knives" IMO.

Been one of my favourites since he moved the half back at the end of last year. Finds the ball regularly, his boot is lethal and those goals from 50+ you can't put a price on! Expecting more of the same for 2016 and on. :thumbsu:

+1.

Love the Sav.

One thing you cant deny is he seems to be a barometer for us. When he's playing well the whole team usually does

His disposal off the half back line is extremely important but i do wonder as the team develops if he will be surpassed by a more natural defender who can also deliver the ball. I mean look at wce they thought bennell was the bees knees last year and then this year he was playing WAFL i think mainly due to his inability to defend

Savage could be one that ends up the wing or he could be one that really rounds out his game and cements himself on the half back flank

Either way he's 24 and has plenty of upside. Good to get the extension done and out of the way. More worried about some of the others.

I think most on this board are the exact opposite which is why I phrased it like that, I don't get what everyone sees that I don't.

For all this talk of a lethal boot he barely kicks goals, was our 6th best rebounder and 5th best inside 50 player and I don't recall a game where he really cut the opposition open. He couldn't cut it in the midfield so was moved back to get some easier touches but is not accountable defensively.

I just reckon he still has a bit to prove and I'm not convinced he will still be in our best 22 come 2018.

The majority of games after round 5-6 this year he had a forward tagger on him, such was his influence in early games in the season off half back

Sav was one of the players last season that opposition teams thought worthy of tagging, regularly. That says something.

I know this all too well, I had him in my SuperCoach team for a while.
I really rate Sav, easily in the top few kicks in the team, if not the best. His run and carry and long goals are great to watch too.

Happy he got a contract extension.
Thought 2 years rather than 1 but all part of the plan I'm sure.
