Can we get clarification on the rookie draft?
We can only pick players who are actually rookie listed at an AFL club or who have played 0 career games. Is this correct?

Waiver wire like in a lot of the American games.

We will start off with a an order from 1-12. If there is a player you want in the free agents pool you can bid on him at any stage. If nobody lower in the order bids on him you get the player and then go to the bottom of the order.

So if we have a Michael Barlow type situation where someone comes out of nowhere I might bid on him... Let's say Im fifth in the order, if nobody from the top four bids on him within 24 hours then he joins my list. I would then move to pick 12 and I would need to delist a player to take his place in the free agency to ensure I stay within list numbers.

A bid needs to either stand unbeaten for 24 hours, or have every earlier pick pass before the player is signed.

If you are lower in the order it would be good sportsmanship to pass if you're not interested in the player, but it's not required.

If I have pick 5 and I'm playing the team that has pick 4 and I need to bring in a key defender on Friday morning before lockout, they would be within their rights to let the clock run out so I go into the match a player down.

Given that we will have 18 inactive players each, i dont think the waiver wire will be used a hell of a lot, with any good prospects already on a list.

Also whats the point of the rookie list? Are we taking players and being unable to play them this year?

I agree that the waiver wire wont be used too much, and to be honest I don't think that is a bad thing. If it is being used to fill gaps then it is doing it's job IMO. The more teams going all out to win every game, the better the competition is.

I have seen games in the past were the same 6 teams goes all-in and are miles ahead of the pack, 6 teams are in perpetual re-build mode and 6 teams get stuck in that no-man's land inbetween.

There are a few reasons for the rookie list.

1 - Most simply, to make the lists more closely resemble AFL lists, even if this is merely an aesthetic thing.
2 - One of the best things I like about these games are the fact that they make every player on an AFL list fantasy relevant. I like the idea of every side having the option to go for more speculative picks without having to worry about a list spot being wasted. These games are more rewarding I feel when somebody has found a diamond in the rough.
3 - Coverage for long-term injuries. This one isn't the most likely because we have a free agency, but if you had a player on your rookie list you could get a replacement in without having to delist a player.
4 - Finally, I would like to think that down the track there is a possibility that this comp could grow into a genuine 18 team competition. If this were to occur, the rookie list actually becomes pretty handy. When you have 18 teams it can be hard for a lot of sides to full out a 22 on any given week so having rookies that play games can be a real strategic advantage.

Yep fair enough armooo.

Sorry i left out an A.
FAAB
Free agent acquisition budget.
Used in nfl fantasy.
Everyone gets a budget of eg. 100 credits.
When u want a player you bid, if anyone else wants the player it becomes an auction.
New credit each season, doesn't carry over.

Actually now i think about it FAAB wouldn't work in this type of league.
It works best as blind bidding which we would need a commissioner to run it.

Whats the point of having a draft and a squad of 40 if we are able to bid on players on an ongoing basis? Make it like the actual AFL and wait til draft time to delist etc. Survival of the fittest I say. That would be a really good comp.

I hear where you're coming from but like SKD said, it's not going to be used much at all.

The free agency would close before finals so there will still be a survival of the fittest element.

That actually doesn't sound too bad to me at all, if we made it open bidding instead of closed it could work.

At the end of the day it's all going to be fairly insignificant I would say. I just hate the idea of having a player come from absolutely nowhere, but not be a part of our game until next season.

Going back to the Barlow example, imagine the hype a player like that would have in a game like this, would be such a shame for it to go to waste. Also adds another level of strategy.

Because of the numbers in our squads the chances are it's someone coming out of the blue and everyone will just bid the maximum amount as it will be very rare, so we'll still need an order - I suggest we have it as reverse order for cumulative points so the team who is struggling the most gets first dibs in a tie.

That makes a helluva lot of sense! I second this motion

Yeah good call, didn't think of that TBH. The reverse cumulative sounds like a good idea.

I think for this year we should do the PSD, Rookie and Free Agent order based on who had the worst luck in the previous draws for draft numbers.

So if you had the best pick in the original draft draw and the best pick in the re-distribution draft draw, you would have the worst picks in the PSD and Rookie draft and you would start last in line for free agents.

In my NFL fantasy, the waiver wire resets for every round. This allows the bottom team access to the best free agent every week.

The thing with waiver wires is that they are always private so you cannot trump another player on purpose... We'd need a commissioner if we were to go the private way.

E.g. At the end of a round, I might desperately need a KPD.

I would offer a player for a few alternatives in case someone else with a better waiver bid on my top couple preferences.

Eg. A waiver list could look like:
1. Dawson for Hurley
2. Dawson for Hooker
3. Dawson for Fisher

Also, once you submit a claim you cannot back out of it once it is successful.

It would work best with a private commissioner, or if there was a program.

Also I was thinking when submitting a best 22 + 3 emergencies, I don't think we can make it rolling like SuperCoach. Otherwise we could keep editing our post. Maybe we need a seperate post if we are bringing in an emergency. That way we can't edit our 25 man squad

On nfl fantasy,
Made my championship game last week
My 1st and 2nd round picks, OBJ and dez, both out.
Eifert out.
Got smashed.
Oh the humanity.

Lockout will take place an hour or two before the opening game of the round.

How the emergencies score is another one of the finer details we would need to look at as there can be a few variations

- do you let a midfield emergency come in for a key forward?
- if somebody gets injured before scoring a point do they count?
