I dont think that would ever be the case, they will both have different strengths and weaknesses and would be chosen with that in mind. The Brown twins might be as close as you would get as two players being nearly the same and really still know who is the better player. After the draft Hine said they were rated equally by him, so it came down to which was a better fit for the list. The Berg ticked those boxes more than Aish it would seem.

My understanding is that Hine has a rating system which spits out a numerical value.

Really surprised by that. Hodge has played some truly great games of footy, but in terms of career, I'd have Judd miles in front.

Google Leigh Matthews and Neville Bruns, Tony Lockett and Peter Caven, Greg Williams and ..., Nathan Buckley and blood etc. I'd argue that Matthews, Plugger, Bucks and Diesel also had significantly better careers than Luke Hodge.

BUT Boyd was meant to set the AFL world on fire, hes played a few games, not saying he wont be a star but it shows being a first year player is tough especially to do it all year.

You seemed to think that a couple of sniping acts performed by Judd was clear evidence that Hodge has had a superior career. I was just pointing out the flaw in your theory.

That game infuriated me. He won a brownlow that year over Swan when he should have been rubbed out for that incident. Not only that, but he got reported, yet polled 2 votes. Wtf??? How do you poll two votes in a best and fairest comp when you've just been reported???
Judd is one of the dirtiest players of the modern era. Name another player who has been cited for eye gouging twice, and a chicken wing tackle? All dog acts designed specifically to hurt/injure others. The eye gouging I take particular exception to. Imagine if he'd blinded someone doing that? Pretty sure that would have been regarded as one of the worst things anyone has done on a footy field.

Only from watching draft videos, Scharenberg reads the ball extremely well, is courageous and takes a good one bite grab regularly in a contested situation. He runs to the right spots and is assured with his disposal which is gold off half back. He may be able to play on bigger players with his body work in marking, some of which reminded me of Clement.

Aish does some clever things, runs hard and is not afraid of a contest, but doesn't offer much in a body sense. Could potentially be a decent half forward/mid.

But Scharenberg shows class and makes it look easy which I always prefer and his ability to take intercept marks puts him ahead.

The only thing I'm worried about is having a bone removed from both your feet surely makes things a bit different. I really hope the club know what they are doing because I've never heard of such action before and who knows what effect it will have.

It might help him though as well so will have to wait and see but if he gets well he will be best 22 easily.

The umpires award votes based on best on ground, not best and fairest on the ground.

The fairest lens on the award comes in with the exclusion of those who have been suspended.

Again I'll post this OUR own Josh Thomas had the same surgery on one of his feet and it fixed his issues right up.
Shaz had it on both feet is the only difference.

You can draw some comparisons between these two, Scharenberg the better mark with his height and body work, what's similar is their summing up of options and neat disposal, but Hodge sticks his head over it and wins the hard ball much better.

If Scharenberg learns that he will be a force but even if he is a Clement type who puts his body on the line a bit more in marking contests and has exquisite foot skills at half back, he will send Fasolo forward, be a great replacement for Maxwell and may allow Williams a crack on the ball which will all be great outcomes.

I read from those in the know he was much more contested player then a young Goddard, so a young Hodge would be more inline with him except Shaz has shown he can also impact fwd which leads me more towards Pavlich like.
A guy who made AA back, fwd and midfield.

I don't think he's anything like Hodge. Or Clement. These are players that play in a hard nosed, bullocking fashion, throw themselves into the contest and look to muscle their way out of situations. Scharenberg is a player that utilises time and space much better from what I've seen. Defensively he looks more like Corey Enright, while hopefully he could be a Pendles type if he goes into the midfield.

Unless Scharenberg's career gets ended because of injury, then I still back it in as the right choice.

Aish would've just been another mid-paced 182cm midfielder with a light frame. We needed a 190cm defender to replace Shaw and eventually Maxwell.

I think Beams and Pendlebury can do the Aish role. Freeman adds dynamite speed. Scharenberg adds the utility that can cut you up. I think he'll turn out a bit like Goddard.

Definitely the right decision structure wise.

If the injuries never heel, then it will obviously go down a mistake. But too early to tell and from what I know he is back running and looking at a return this year.
